Does anyone know if/when CellOne of San Luis Obispo will turn up GSM? It seems some people already think they have (they haven't): http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/net_ussl.shtml I live in San Luis Obispo, and GSM from a local company might be a welcome change over the T-Mobile (310-170) and Cingular (310-380) service we currently have. Cheers, Sean
So far, C-1 SLO still only sells TDMA phones. Life used to be rosy for them, but AT&T built their own network in the area and ended C-1's flow of roaming income. C-1 wants to convert to GSM, but doesn't have the money. I don't know what their next step might be. I bet they're hoping for a wealthy partner, but more likely they'll have to sell out and I don't know who would want them for anything less than a bargain. So, for the time being, I'm guessing they're just holding their heads above water. This is indicated by the appearance of "unlimited" plans. They need to make a move. Cingular will turn off TDMA in 2 years, and then C-1 customers' phones won't work outside of SLO. They appear to be stuck between a rock & a hard place. I hope they can survive, they have been one of the few companies that excelled at customer service.
Wirelessly posted (MOT-8720_/00.62 UP.Browser/6.2.3.4.c.1.104 (GUI) MMP/2.0) Who might be interested in them though? None of the national players should be interested imo.
Cingular or T-Mobile might want them. They have an extensive network of cell sites throughout San Luis Obispo, and 850MHz licenses. One of the GSM players could make major inroads in town in terms of coverage by acquiring their spectrum and site leases.
It appears C1 is turning up GSM in San Luis Obispo and surrounding area. There is now a "mysterious" GSM network broadcasting as 311-260 (curiously close to T-Mobile's regular MCC-MNC) with service from (at least) San Luis Obispo to Cambria. GSMWorld reports that C1 is planning on an August 2006 service date for GSM. Although I've since moved out of SLO (I visited this weekend), I find this to be an interesting development for C1.
True. I guess it would bring them a little closer to serving population And we know that the company has nothing against picking up carriers that run GSM.
Cell One of Bishop San Luis does have PCS licenses for Bakersfield and other areas so it can connect to there current network in Mammoth Lakes/Death Valley market. San Luis Santa Barbara Salinas Visalia
311-260 makes sense for C1SLO given that that's what I'd expect the next MNC assigned (to any carrier) to be. 311-260 being so close to 310-260 is just a coincidence. There are a few other interesting MNC overlaps, such as 310-150 (Cingular old BellSouth DCS) and 311-150 (Wilkes Cellular) overlapping around Crawfordville, GA until Cingular moved -150 to -410. -SC
Let me clear up the confusion, as I work currently for Cellular One... We ARE going GSM... infact, it will be happening very soon, this fall. That is all I can say about that... I can tell you that we will have Treo's, Razr's, LG, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, and Sony SIM card phones. If your a concerned parent and wants the security of your child having a phone, we'll have the Firefly too!
But the big question is - are they/you going to switch back to national plans, become a partner with somebody, or stay local only ?
