Some people can multi-task and others can not. Since all of us receive the same license, we must consider the effect of distractions on the latter category.

Any distraction that has been mentioned in this thread can seriously impare the attention of a non-multi tasking driver. This includes lighting a cigarette or even getting a stick of gum out of pocket/purse and removing the wrapper.

The question now is what do we do to prevent mayhem on the highways? Many countries require the use of a handsfree when driving. IMHO, this is a step in the right direction.

One issue that contributes to inattention while yapping on a handheld cell phone (that does not apply to handsfree talking) is that while yacking, many people prop their elbow against the window, shove the handset into their face and essentially lock their head in place. With their heads locked, these people look in one direction only.

Generally, women are better multi-taskers than men.

Sometimes I talk on my cell phone.....but that is rare and I don't weave or anything like that.

And I change the radio....but my Explorer Limited has the radio controls (sound and mode (am, fm 1, 2, cd)) and ac fan speed and temp right to the right side of the steering wheel so I don't have to worry about that. ;)

I talk on the cell phone while driving too, but it's always the 'secondary' activity. I can't believe how many people can't do this -- in the last two weeks I've probably seen forty people puttering along at 45 mph on the freeway when the prevailing speed is closer to 70 or 75, because they're on the phone. This morning some schmuck was TEXTING HIS FRIEND while I was trying to pass him.

In my car, the radio and telephone controls are on the steering wheel.

    Nor can I.
These days, it seems that everytime that I get out on 101 the left lane is puttering along. People are passing them on the right. Invariably, the first vehicle is either an SUV or a large pick up truck with the driver deeply involved in a cellular conversation. He/She is totally oblivious to what is happening outside of their vehicle: the long line of frustrated drivers behind them, the people passing them on the right, or even the hand gestures that the passing drivers are giving them.

If the CHP began ticketing these drivers (and I believe that the CHP has wide discretion which they can exercise to remove unsafe drivers from our freeways) I would publicly applaud them!

    :p

You should see traffic in the morning....specifically everyone driving their BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, Porsche (Cayenne) and occasionally (usually at least once a week....usually during season and in the Spring) Dodge Viper, Ferrari (specifically the Modena and Spider), Lamborghini (Murcielago and Gallardo) and Rolls Royce.

Now that I have a handsfree headset and a full duplex speakerphone I don't need to talk while holding my phone.

But like I mentioned earlier, I rarely talk while driving on the interstate unless I get an incoming call.

I haven't seen anyone texting....but I have seen people talking on the cell phone and talking to someone in their car......also eating and drinking coffee.

I have also seen someone (a month or so ago) on the interstate looking down at a map when they are supposed to be driving.

My car's radio controls are also on the steering wheel. ;)

I don't know about that.....about a month ago, a guy driving a old delivery van, almost ran me off of I-75 when I was going 75 mph.

I had to go to the shoulder of the road....and I beeped my horn so he wouldn't keep coming over....he jerked his van back into the slower lane....if he didn't, then I would have probably been in a :censored: of trouble....rollover's...etc. etc.

He wasn't going that fast over the speed limit on 75, depending on where he was the average speed limit is 70 in FL. I just wish they would do this in our non-congested NJ

Urban freeway limit here is 65. Desert freeway limit is 70 (when there's a cop nearby) and ø (when there's not).

So yesterday while I was on the way home, some guy was swerving and weaving all over the 91. He was trying to dial his cell phone. I called the police and they pulled him over just before the 605.

Zaphod saves the day! Maybe you should change "Der Moderator" to "Cell phoning driver hunter"....

Last night I was thinking about the whole driving & talking on your cell thing. Part of it is a matter of what we've already leard to do simultaneously. Since we usually learn the drive while talking and changing the radio, doing so isn't much of a problem. I haven't had much practice driving and talking on a cell, so I'm still not good at it.

This morning, I was singing along to a song on the radio by Stellar Kart and realized that it made the drive to work feel shorter kinda like talking on a phone when you zone out. If any of you see me singing while driving on the Interstate, watch out.

What was the name of that website in California where it was, like, two guys who would drive around on the freeway with digital cameras and take pictures of people talking on their cell phones and post them on the web... or was it people abusing the car pool lane? I can't remember... no, wait, it was CarPoolCheats.org. Well, anyway, someone ought to ride around (not drive, of course) in a car and take pictures of the people talking on their cell phones. That would be cool.
