Hi, I'll be a freshman at NYU in the fall and I will be the first to admit that I'm not very familiar with the city. Does anyone already living in NYC have any suggestions for a good cell phone plan or service provider? My dad conveniently scheduled our trip to drop me off so that we will have barely any time do research them while actually there and I figured I should get a head start. I'd really appreciate recommendations of all kinds... I'm looking for something with a good long distance plan (to make calls back home to Texas, yee haw!) and maybe a good international plan to (to make calls to my boyfriend in Montreal, eh!)!! If anyone can recommend a specific type of phone they think is just fabulous too, I'd appreciate that as well! Also maybe a lot of local minutes (I don't know how all of this works, I'm not familiar with mobile phone services either, hehehe) for communicating between cell phones in the city. Thank you people!
from the main NorthEastern forum page you will see a search field. Type NYC and press the search button. I think you'll find what you are looking for.
with verizon now, you can get 300 any time minutes with UNLIMITED night and weekend minutes for $40 bucks a month. this includes long distance to montreal and texas...i think that deal is expiring though, and its not clear how VZW will top this current promotion....more anytime minutes??? what you *could* do is get service now, then transfer your account to an NYC # in august...
Are you sure that plan includes calls to Montreal, CA? I thought the America's Choice Rates applied to anywhere on there network to anybody in the country. I'm pretty sure calling out of the country, even if its just to Canada will cost you extra.
yes i am sure. this is an email i recieved from verizon wireless a few days ago: Thank you for contacting Verizon Wireless through our website. Domestic long distance is included with your America's Choice calling plan when calling from the home airtime rate area to anywhere in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. A no charge, international dialing feature must be added to your account before calling Puerto Rico.
Be careful about roaming off the America's Choice network even if you are inside an America's Choice designated area.
I wouldn't be too sure about that dchui. Read this post: http://www.wirelessadvisor.com/waforums/messageview.cfm?catid=2&threadid=2981
I agree that in the NY metro area you might find some roaming areas. (Personally, I haven't found any, but the metro area is pretty big.) However, I stand by my statement that you'd be hard-pressed to find yourself roaming within NYC.
