Nextel uses the proprietary Motorola iDEN system. It is not compatible with GSM or CDMA. To read more about iDEN check out this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IDEN This is why Nextel uses only Motorola phones and the ocasional BlackBerry. -Charlie
It's important to make a distinction here. TDMA is the method of modulation used by the iDen system. iDen is what handles the actual connections and usage of the network. iDen could've been made to use CDMA if the designers had chosen to 12 years ago.
But the simple answer here is none of the choices the OP listed. iDEN is a different network technology from CDMA and GSM. -Jay
I know we all like to go off on our tangents from time to time... I believe it is a sign (Or is it a symptom?) of the high intelligence possessed by the WA membership. -Jay
LOL, I know I once debated absolute zero with a friend for months. He believed that it didn't exist in nature, I believe it does, and I had an interesting theory on how & where. In the end we agreed to disagree. -Jay
Motorola does have a Nextel phone that has iDEN & GSM capabilities, you can find them on Ebay and are used for when you go outside the US to roam when there is no iDEN system in the country your in. I almost bought one, but decided against it.
I have the i930 and love it. It is a bit on the chunky side, but I use it for Direct Connect at work and reception (in my area) has been great. Not a bad phone at all, and the reason I bought it was because of the iDEN/GSM ability. Keep in mind that it is a Windows Mobile 2003 Smartphone, and we all know how Windows can behave at times. I have not had any OS issues, though.
The one I was looking at was a V500 Series iDEN/GSM phone, so they must make more then 1 of these units.
Do you mean the CDMA/iDEN phone that is supposed to launch in a few months? Or is there another iDEN GSM/CDMA hybrid phone out there?? Fire, where did you see it?
When I was looking for a phone on EBay a few months ago, I was looking for a V500 or V600 Series phone & these were showing up, per the seller they were iDEN phones with GSM capabilities. I will see if I can find them again.
