Does anyone have maps that show CDMA vs. TDMA coverage areas in the Southeastern US and also in the Ohio River Valley area....I have some family that travels a lot in the Ohio River Valley area...he works for a water transport company on the Mississippi and Ohio rivers.....and he is wanting a new cellular service...... Thanks, Brad
Thanks man....he still has a couple of months on his current contracts, but we were looking at some options in advance.... Thanks again, Brad
The best map of half of the desired states is Stanley Cline's at roamer1.org site. The biggest problem is that those rivers are boundaries between so many systems, and the rivers flow in mostly rural areas. I'd limit my choices to the biggest cellular 800 MHz carriers, with on-network and one-rate plans. This is really the domain of marine vhf two-way and public correspondence, 158 and 220 MHz, but I don't know the prices. I'm consulting the Cellular Travel Guide fifth edition 1999, and I'll start at upstream on the Ohio: city A left bank B A right bank B Pittsburg, PA ATT VZW same Wheeling, WV ATT Alltel American C1 Alltel Sistersville, WV American C1 VZW no mapped coverage in Wayne National Forest, OH Parkersburg, WV ATT Alltel same Pt Pleasant, WV ATT VZW ATT USCC Huntington, WV ATT Alltel no mapped coverage in Lawrence Co, OH Portsmouth, OH ATT Alltel ATT USCC Maysville, KY American C1 Cingular VZW Cingular Cincinnatti, OH VZW Cingular same Madison, IN VZW Cingular Cingular VZW Lousiville, KY VZW Cingular same Brandenburg, KY Cingular Bluegrass Cingular VZW Evansville, IN Cingular VZW same Paducah, KY Cingular VZW Douglas C1 First Cellular of S. IL Columbus, KY Cingular VZW VZW Cingular Caruthersville, MO VZW Yorkville VZW Cingular Osceola, AR VZW Cingular Cingular Alltel Memphis, TN VZW Cingular same Helena, AR Triton Cellular Cellular South Cingular Alltel Greenville, MS Alltel Cellular South Cingular Alltel Lake Providence, LA Alltel Cellular South Centennial Alltel Vicksburg, MS Alltel Cingular Centennial Alltel Grand Gulf, MS Centennial Cingular Centennial Alltel Natchez, MS Centennial Alltel Centennial Cellular South New Roads, LA Centennial Cingular Centennial Cingular Baton Rouge, LA Alltel Cingular same New Orleans, LA Alltel Cingular same I listed every carrier who has one county or more of shoreline. Some names of the Cellular One (C1) companies may have changed, or they may have been bought up by someone larger (who changed their names!). When listed cities are far apart, there's no changes. Where you see "same" under right bank, the river flows through the coverage, rather than along a border. It looks like AC on Verizon (with Alltel) and its converse Alltel plan (with Verizon) could be very good. You could chose based on where the billing address would be. A high-gain omni-directional dual-band magnet-mount antenna would greatly improve coverage over the cellphone's own built-in antenna. This would help a great deal when the towboat is not on a city's riverfront. What an exercise! I didn't watch any TV this evening. COtech
Thanks so much man.....I do appreciate it....I didn't expect anyone to put forth so much effort...that was very nice of you. Thanks again, Brad
Well, once you stated the question I became curious enough to find out for myself. Glad I could help out, neighbor. The one county shoreline service providers I mentioned are: Bluegrass Cellular for Han_____ Co., KY KY-3 (at the underscore, put a four letter word for rooster that I cannot enter. FORBIDDEN!) Triton Cellular Partners C1 for Tunica Co., MS MS-1 I think Roamer1 can put the new names on any of the Cellular One carriers, time permitting. COtech
