Most of us have probably gotten emails that appear to be from someone we know. It contains a short message akin to: "Hi, take a look at this" followed by a questionable link. Well today I got my first text message with the same MO. It read, "I have a message for you here:" and then provided a link. The supposed sender is someone I know, but in all the years I've known him, not once has ever texted me, so I immediately recognized it as fake.

So now we even have to be careful about text messages.:mad::confused::eek:

RETRACTION: The text message was/is not a fake. I happened to cross paths with my friend today and asked him about it. What happened is he installed voxer and it asked if he'd like to invite everyone in his contact list. Without thinking he clicked "yes." When I mentioned it, he laughed and explained. He said he has had over 500 people (business and personal contact) send him a text or call him demanding to know what the text was about.

But, fake text messages still abound. I got one the other month. It was supposed to be from Verizon, but it was sent from a 10 digit phone number, so I knew it was fake. Clicking on the link, I ended up on a spoofed Verizon website. Phishing and smishing are very real. In the case of Verizon, official Verizon messages come from some long weird number that begins with 900 and it has FREE TXT MSG (or some similar verbiage).

My wife got one the other day with a link and the number that showed up for where it was coming from was "1"

@QLR: that is interesting. As I mentioned initially, I get plenty emails that appear to come from those I know, but I've not ever gotten a fake text message. Still haven't. I was very nervous because I was afraid my phone had been hacked and they got my contact list. I was relieved to learn that wasn't true.

I've gotten few fake or mistake wrong number texts -- I treat them both the same -- ignore. I've never gotten one with a link in it though.

I have had a couple of interesting intimate ones from the same number, without any links.

Much as it was fun reading them, I decided to block the number. :)
