I have no credit at all. I'm a college student and decided not to get any credit cards or loans until I absolutely need them. Currently I am on my parents Alltel plan right now. That ends in January and i want to get an iphone, so I have to get my own plan. I'm just trying to figure out if they will approve me and if I am going to have to pay something up front. I know when my friend had poor credit she had to pay up front for something at alltel. Any idea if I will be able to sign a contract? Should I get a low limit credit card from my credit union to try to start building my credit up?
AT&T and Verizon have the strictest credit checks with the highest deposits, so given your lack of a history you would most likely have to pay a decent sized deposit. Sprint's credit standards are lower and their deposits are also less. T-Mobile's credit check is more lean as well. I actually was on Verizon with my grandmother but I wanted something under my own name however I have horrible credit. Sprint wanted $250 from me and AT&T wanted $400 but I actually was approved with no deposit for up to 3 lines with T-Mobile! So you might want to check into T-Mobile or Sprint.
I want an iphone so unless it is opened up to other carriers than I have to stick with AT&T. Thanks though.
No the iPhone is still only for AT&T. If you want an iPhone that bad then you'll likely have to pay a deposit. Go ahead and have AT&T run your credit and at least see what your deposit will be. Who knows maybe you'll get lucky and have a lower deposit or even be approved although from what you said I doubt either will be the case. Good luck though!
Alternately, if your parents are willing, they could open the account in their name and you just pay the bill.
