I recently interviewed at a wireless shop in southern Florida and after looking at the commission spreadsheet it looks good on paper. I'm wondering if it's possible for a sales rep to make $40K a year on straight commission. I would appreciate any advice on this matter. Thanks! - GadgetHead
Yes, you can....but it depends on the commission payout structure. For example (this is an old example): Phone cost to company (at least what they tell the salespeople): $200 You sell it to customer: $50 Waive Activation Fee: -$25 Subsidy/Payout From Carrier to Reseller for Activation/Contract: $400 Profit/Commission Qualifying Balance: ($400-200+50-25) $225 Commission %: 15% Commission on Transaction: $33.75 You would need to sell 100 phones/month at this rate (obvioiusly not accounting for bonuses, accessory sales, etc... During my short stint on commission in cellular sales, I averaged 40 activations/month at a retail shop mall kiosk combo. Of course, those were in the good old analog days when we were giving away Moto Flip 550 and selling the StarTac phones.
Thanks for your response. How many hours are you basing your calculations on? After looking at your numbers, it appears that at 40 transactions per month, you would be making about $7/hr if working a 40 hour week. I guess that would be pretty low in any part of the country right?
My 40 activations/month was working much more than 40 hours. It also paid better than my example above, although the pay wasn't great. I think I ended up around $26k/year which would be $12.50/hour assuming a 40hr/week, but I was probably putting in more like 55/week so it would be equal to just over $9/hr. As I said though, I have no clue what it pays these days. It was early 1990's when I was doing it.
If you want to make 40k + selling wireless you should consider outside B2B sales. There's no base salary but you can average 100 acvtivations per month. You should be able to pull $40-$50 per activation I got a T-Mobile master dealer who is looking for B2B agents ( commission only) Let me know if you want me to put you in touch with them. ilian.papasov@t-mobile.com
I made 95k my first year at Verizon, it was the busiest store in the state. Our quota changed month to month, but on average we had about 85 new activations, and had to do about 75 phone upgrades- plus all the data, and acessories. I loved working there, i did it for about 4 years and i had to go on disability for an illness. But YES, you can make a very good living selling wireless.
Commissions are usually better with corporate stores, but that restricts you to selling only one brand. Independant dealers often don't offer the same bennifits, but you usually have more traffic and more options to offer your customers. I'd say making 40k is definately attainable, depending on the location and comp plan, but you gotta hustle for it.
Yes, it is most certainly possible to make a living selling cell phones. I've been doing this for 2 years now, and won't say my income, but it has been the best job I have ever had. I even work for a small WI based carrier. Working for corporate locations is always better. However, yes you are limited to one service. I am paid a very decent hourly, plus a generous commission. I average about 35 phones a month. My two stores that I manage are in local malls.
my name is heather and i work at an indirect store, we sell verizon, cingular, and sprint, i was wondering if anyone knows what these companies pay the dealer for their commission i am only getting like 50 bucks for a 4 line set up with data on all four and that is sprints pay out for me. i would like to know what they are paying their dealer. i am sure i should be getting more
While you're probably right, that you're not making enough per sale (waiting for someone to post realistic information to that) the problem lies in the fact that there's nothing you can do about it short of going to another store, most specifically a corporate store. Sorry I'm sure it's not what you wanted to hear, but sprint doesn't say give the store 75 or 80 bux per line and stipulate x amount has to go to the end salesperson, for that matter you're locked in by your work contract to the rate they are willing to give you.
I was a Nextel dealer for a couple of years and as a dealer you could make unlimited money. I was going thr a terrible divorce and had limited cash flow so that kept me from staying up with it. Anyway it must depend on who you work for. If you are hooked up with someone who WILL pay good and you are in the right area you can make good money. BUT... I just interviewed with Sprint in WV/OH and I told him I wanted to be at 40k in two years and he said I would not be there even managing the store. Just be careful who you work for cause there are a lot who will get what they can out of ya.
Well, seeing as how im 18, still in high school and making about 2200/mo. I dont mind. Our structure is like this: New Lines - 6 dollars Renewals - 1 dollar Accessorys - 10% Features - One months cost (i.e. If you sell a Data plan @ 34.99, you get 34.99) Clearwave (Midwest Wireless High Speed Internet) and Onewave (VOIP) - One Month's cost and then the bonus pool which varies each month. Our bonus pool starts @ 2500, then for every 1 new or 5 renewals we put 5 dollars in the pool, and put one month's cont for any features we sell. then there are numbers we dont know because our manager keeps them a secret, like hitting goals that affect the pool too. I know im averaging about 800 in the bonus pool though. and thats all on top of a 8.10/hr pay(starting, only worked there for three months). Commissions are fairly nice. I dont know what is going to happen with alltel though. and for a part time job, thats really nice. I dont know what full time employees make, but it has to me a bit more then what Im making.
