So why are there are so many places here that AT&T roams off of Alltels GSM. I think they are crazy loosing that revenue. Anyways how much do you think Alltel makes off of GSM traffic?
What is AT&T trying to hide from?Nothing. No matter the carrier the story is still the same, there will not be coverage where you expect they all have dead spots. My nephew goes to Assumption College and he had to jump ship from Verizon because that area is a dead spot for them. My AT&T service the last 2 years has worked very well for me, the Boston/Worcester area in my opinion has excellant AT&T coverage considering where GSM was 8+ years ago.
Remember when you were 4 years old, and the big, green, hairy monster tried to hide behind the box of Hot Wheels in your bedroom closet? It didn't work for the monster, and it won't work for AT&T. They're too big to hide. -Jay
I agree Jay, and I was also agreeing to this thread being pointless. And I also edited my original post.
Alltel makes plenty on GSM roaming, that's why they kept the GSM newtork up and running. Not sure the actual number, but it is alot.
An insider and friend on WA told me about this thread and in my experience, AT&T is excellent both in my area and in my sister's area (she has been testing it for over a week now via my Razr V3 with prepaid AT&T SIM). We will definitely be switching to them most likely in July (and then port over from VZW after August 1). AT&T's (Cingular at the time) network was garbage back when they were transitioning from TDMA to GSM. It was so bad, that we had to switch to Sprint (then they got bad ) and then Verizon (now they are bad ). So it looks like we have come full circle and will be back with our original company (Cell One was our first provider but they were bought out by Cingular and then AT&T, so technically it is our "original" provider ).
Even though I don't have AT&T, they never hide from me. A 300 foot tower of theirs is right behind my backyard. Here's what I have to look at everyday (Click image for more on this tower):
The important thing is AT&T made improvements. They've done this here in L.A., and it's very noticeable. More often than not I really do experience "more bars in more places"...
Mike this is the same with my work phone but my slogan has come to be "more all circuits are busy in more places." I really hate to say this but maybe they cant hide but I sure as hell can hide my pocket book from them. I hope this did not offend anyone as I am not trying to. Thanks
Definitely. I am very impressed with AT&T and their network both in my area and my sister's area from what she has told me. So far, I have only run into a few areas deep inland in my county where the towers are only every 4-5 miles where my Razr wasn't receiving a full signal (but still had clear calls).
In the end, isn't that all that matters? I don't care if I only have 1 bar of signal, as long as the call is clear. -Jay
I definitely agree. But due to the distance between the towers in the rural part of my county, I am still nonetheless impressed with AT&T and their network. My sister is testing the Razr now in Lincoln and she was able to get a good signal in the basement of the department store at the mall there where her Verizon phone dropped me (even with the antenna up).
Glad it is working out for you. I have had at&t since 1989 through Analog, TDMA & GSM and all the mergers acquisitions and name changes. Their coverage has been excellent for me and in all the places I go to. I had Verizon simultaneously with at&t for almost 5 years and it was very disapointing, dropped many calls, could never do a PRL update and worked only from one corner of the house and that too, barely. Lol, my situation is pretty similar to yours. The tower is not exactly behind my backyard but I do have a clear view of it. And you are not, since you are not paying for them. I am rather surprised though that your company is with a provider that does not work in your area. Our company's provider is at&t and they are evaluated every year by taking a detailed employee survey and the decision is based entirely on that. PS: We are in a pretty rural area, surrounded by horse stables and cabbage fields.
att has vastly improved where i live from the TDMA days of Cingular. we still are considered rural, and 1900mhz mostly but i still have very few issues, not to mention i have 3G. all in all its great for me personally. i wouldnt go with anything else.
Wirelessly posted (Walkguru's: Opera/9.50 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/4.1.11328/308; U; en)) yes att has always been the best of whats here.
Yes, I am also glad that it is working out for me. That is definitely a good idea about the detailed survey. My uncle lives in wester Michigan in the LP and the company he works for has Verizon. They got rid of it as of yesterday and on Monday he will be picking up his brand new Alltel phone. I don't know what it will be, but with Verizon he had a BB.
Fun stuff I guess they use AT&T cause the owner likes them that is just fine. My company would not have a survey like that even though it would be nice. I guess they have other things to worry about. It is not bad when I am in the city but I travel to some out lying areas and it is not there so I am not covered with them. That is why it is also nice to have my phone just in case.
Where I am now at my parents in VA there's no at&t or any GSM coverage. I do wish at&t or alltel via some sort of exclusive agreement, or somebody would put up GSM panels though, at least for the sake of people passing through with at&t that don't have anything. I understand the situation though because it's a rural area and at&t is PCS. Alltel knows at&t could expand here so it probably wouldn't be worth it for them to put up GSM for roamers and may hurt them in the long-run. But I'm happy with alltel and their great coverage here. And the eastern half of Kentucky is a curious, largely white spot on the map for them. Not sure what the hold up is there because they're in the cellular band and competing with Bluegrass, Ramcell (now VZW), and Appalachian in different segments, so they could dominate that region if only they wanted too and kept up with the competition.
AT&T has rural coverage at my parent's house in Virginia, and the strange thing is that no other providers work out there. If you are really lucky a Verizon phone will work in the driveway, but only AT&T works in the house (With full bars I might add). The area was expanded into by the old AWS (blue) network, so all the rural coverage out there is 1900 instead of 850.
You sure like to point this out. http://forums.wirelessadvisor.com/v...9932-is-verizon-where-you-are.html#post506652
Sure, if you went back in my post history I wouldn't be suprised if I mentioned it 50, 100, or even more times over the 5+ years I've been a member of these fourms. Why not? If someone who knew nothing about cell phones were to read this forum they would think they needed a CDMA phone for rural coverage. I'm like the "equal time". I am merely stating that there are rural areas where AT&T GSM works, and CDMA does not. -Jay EDIT: Here's another from 2006: http://forums.wirelessadvisor.com/s...r-improvements-in-virginia-va.html#post383759
Same with me Jay I say things over it was more or less a little humor. On this forum I would highly doubt someone who be persuaded to go CDMA more so GSM and there is nothing wrong with that what ever they need to get the job done.
One of these places (which is near me) is Cliffside, NC. Right near the SC State line on US 221A south of Forest City, NC Cliffside, NC is about 15 miles north of me (and I don't go there too much, only when on my way to Lake Lure or Mount Mitchell). There is only one cell tower near Cliffside (AT&T). Alltel is not licensed to serve WNC, while the 800 mhz carriers USCC & Verizon don't have a tower near Cliffside, (It's in Forest City, 10 miles away) and their signal is unreliable in that area. Sprint & SunCom have absolutely nothing near Cliffside, NC
Good job making your point lol. Anyways I guess things are different in the east and west of the USA. If I can remember right GSM really is better in the east and in the west CDMA is alot better for coverage.
I admit, I don't know about the west coast as I've never been there. However, from Florida to Maine, and west to West Virginia, Tennessee, Ohio, Indiana, Illinios, and Kentucky, I've been pleased with my rural coverage, and rarely encounter a no service area. Sometimes I have to break out the V551 with an external antenna, but most often I can find some way to make a call. I have never been somewhere with someone on CDMA where they were able to make a call, and I could not. I have encountered the situation where the CDMA phone could not call, but I could. Again, this is my personal experience, YMMV -Jay
