I know people that have traveled the GSP have seen these COW's all along it, Well today I found out they belong to T-Mobile, and they don't have any plans on getting rid of them for quite a while. The cost for PSE&G to run the power & Verizon to run the lines are quite high & T-Mobile would rather have a person everyday run the parkway to fuel the generators then put up permanant towers.

LOL! That's crazy! I knew they were T-Mobile because my Cingular phone connects to them. I've always wondered why T-Mobile installed those COWs instead of collocating or building new towers like everyone else.

T-Mobile had good coverage on the Parkway before the COWs. Yet another reason I don't see why they did this.

I've noticed them before. I figured they were ATT. Last time I went up to Saratoga NY was August 2003 so I figured these were to plug in att gsm holes. It looks pretty dumb...

I'll be on the GSP between 129 and 156 tomorrow. Will I see any there?

I know there are several south of exit 120 down to exit 98 -- mostly in center grassy area. There are no visible power lines in the center, so that makes sense about the power.

Any body have any pictures they could submit to the gallery?

By the way, once a picture is in the gallery. There is a link provided under the picture that you can easily copy and paste into any post.

They are all over the place. Almost every mile there is one, especially from exit 153 down to exit 145. I also remember seeing this messy COW setup on the way to NY state border up by exit 166, I think. It is in the center grass area. I thought there were tougher regulations concerning the GSP look and feel because it is supposed to be "New Jersey's prettiest driving experience" ;), which is why they don't allow trucks on it and the overall scene of the GSP is trees. Also, I am surprised NIMBYs didn't get in the way.

I guess you are going to Passaic? My exit is 155 because I take Rt 19 to get home.

It's a big, fat and stinky thing that looks like a Gateway computer box with four legs and goes "moo" and gives out milk. ;)

Nah! LOL! Actually, a COW is a "Cell On Wheels" which is a cell site/tower that is normally deployed temporarily (usually a few days) to either increase capacity or to quickly restore service in areas where for some reason service went down.

The only carrier that uses cell on wheels here in my area is Cingular. They'll put them up before and during the time when the new permanent tower is under construction. I wish Sprint would do that.

Fire14 - Did your source say how they get the transmissions to and from the COWs? Microwave maybe?

If someone would post a picture of one, we could see if there was some type of backhaul antenna. ;)

I haven't seen any dish attached to the COWs. But I'll pay more attention next time I ride on the GSP.

I do know there is the repeater attached to the top of the mast (The Diamond or square white panel) & it is aimed at the one in Union where I was talking to him.
I went to take a photo on my way home & it's at MM 139.1 South on the right side of the road. I am going to start downloading the photos & see how they came out & try the new forum to post them.

Yeah, pretty much every T-Mobile antenna in this area has one of those diamonds. Even Cingular is starting to use them.

Fair Lawn, actually. Rt 4 just west of 208 and GS Plaza.

I posted 1 picture of the COW in the new Gallery, it's not the best but at 5:00 rush hour traffic & on the side of the GSP, it was the best I could do. :D
