I'm considering buying a phone off ebay to replace my prepaid phone. If I do it will probably be a Motorola RAZR of some sort. What info do I need about the phone to be sure it will work? What would be the difference between a phone that is an original Alltel version and a phone that has been "flashed" with the Alltel software?

Does anyone know what steps I would need to take other than calling customer service with the ESN of the new phone so they can switch it on my account?

    Thanks,
    BGC

I would just get one that hasn't been flashed but was originally from Alltel. Otherwise you can't be guaranteed that it will work. Other than that it's just an ESN change.

That would be my preference but actually finding out if the phone is an original Alltel or a flashed one may prove difficult. Too bad Alltel doesn't give a rat's behind about their prepaid customers, no matter how long they've been with them. If they did there would be a way to upgrade through Alltel directly.

Does the phone have the name ALLTEL on it? If not, it's not originally from Alltel. Yes, it may have been worn off, but it would have to be really old to experience that kind or wear and likely woud not be activatable in the first place.

The pics I've seen on ebay don't show Alltel as far as I can tell. But that doesn't really mean anything because even the pics of the Razrs on the Alltel site don't show the Alltel logo unless you use the 3D view to see the back of the phone.

Hi BGC i responded to your post on Howard Forums as well.

You will not have problems using flashed phones on Alltel. You can post whatever listing you are looking at you can post it here or howard forums and we can give you our opinion of it for what it's worth. If you are looking at one of mine I can tell you right now you will have no issues (themps). And if you do, I'm good about returns as well. Feedback is important. Check the sellers feedback to make sure people are happy with whatever they are selling.

This may seem silly/crazy but, if I buy one of those prepaid kits from Wal-Mart, will I be able to move it onto my existing prepaid account or is that not allowed in their policies? If I have to forfeit the minutes, that will be ok with me.

If you buy the Alltelu prepaid kit at Walmart, DO NOT activate the phone as described in the package. Call the Alltelu Customer Service line and tell them you bought a new phone and want to replace your existing phone with that one. This way you keep your same number, minutes, and expiration date.

If you don't mind losing the minutes and don't mind getting a new phone number you can goto the Alltelu website and can choose from a greatly expanded choice of phones for a prepaid acct. They are apparently waiving the $35 activation fee right now so you would just pay the price of the phone and $20 min airtime charge, I think.

Thanks for the reply. I'd like to keep my existing account because my minutes don't expire as long as I make a 1 minute call every 30 days.

You don't lose your current account. You only lose the minutes that you are required to get with the new phone.

I know if you get a prepackaged phone at Walmart you can use that phone to replace the one on your acct. But I was under the impression that if you order a different phone online, the phone would arrive preactivated with a new phone number. I've been told that if the new phone was activated with a new number then you could not transfer your existing balance and expiration date to the new phone, am I wrong?

You mean transferring prepaid to prepaid? That I'm not sure about. I know that people have gotten them preactivated on prepaid and switched them to postpaid without any issue. I guess it's possible they won't let it change prepaid accounts.

you can transfer a prepaid phone after the balance on the account has been used up but i think it has to be at $0 for 30 days or something. i did this once about three years ago but i can't remember how, sorry. i'm pretty sure you can't combine the blance of the two accounts but i would call customer service to confirm that.

Prepaid to prepaid is what I was talking about, that's the reason I'm considering ebay for a new phone. If I could get one through Alltel and switch it, I would.
