Okay, so in a different thread, Larry pointed me at the zoning administrator's website for the City of L.A. Since I am home sick and don't have anything to do and have already watched enough television to make my brain cry, I went and catalogued the zoning administration hearings for the City of L.A. (website) for unmanned wireless communication sites (i.e., applications for towers) in the last six months from today. Some notes before I post the huge list: This does not include cities that are separate from Los Angeles (such as Beverly Hills, Culver City, Santa Monica, and West Hollywood) nor unincorporated places (such as Porter Ranch and Universal City). SCLA means South Central LA, SELA means Southeast LA, NELA means Northeast LA, WLA means West LA. The towns after the addresses are the planning areas, not necessarily the towns they're in. Just because a tower was proposed doesn't mean it was approved, and just because it was approved does not mean it was built. Some observations: AT&T are going hardcore to build out - remember that they are building 1900 MHz GSM here, and that you have to have roughly twice the number of 1900MHz towers as 800MHz towers to cover the same area to the same quality. Cingular and T-Mobile are next with some very well-known dead spots, such as Silver Lake. Nextel are just kind of plodding along, Verizon seem to be building for capacity rather than coverage, and Sprint are tackling some places that historically are very tough sells - Los Feliz and Bel Air amoung them. You can look them up for yourself with the link above. If it says approval of plans, you can pretty much count on the site being built in the next 6 months (assuming, of course, the plans were approved). Now, on with the list: AT&T (75) 10643 N Glenoaks Blvd, Arleta 11155 N Bradley Ave, Arleta 2130 E 1st St, Boyle Heights 2900 E Calle Pedro Infante, Boyle Heights 2910 E Cesar Chavez Ave, Boyle Heights 701 Palisades Dr, Brentwood 19740 Sherman Way, Canoga Park 22110 W Roscoe Blvd, Canoga Park 22736 Vanowen St, Canoga Park 6016 Fallbrook Ave, Canoga Park 6355 Topanga Canyon Blvd, Canoga Park 7657 Winnetka Ave, Canoga Park 8401 Fallbrook Ave, Chatsworth 11400 Balboa Blvd, Granada Hills 1450 W 228 St, Harbor 16215 S Ainsworth St, Harbor 1666 N Highland Av, Hollywood 3016 W Waverly Dr, Hollywood 3350 N Barham Blvd, Hollywood 5068 Franklin Ave, Hollywood 5555 Melrose Ave, Hollywood 6801 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood 7036 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood 7500 Melrose Ave, Hollywood 14941 Devonshire St, Mission Hills 15725 Parthenia St, Mission Hills 8856 Kester Ave, Mission Hills 12520 Magnolia Blvd, N Hollywood 2161 W Colorado Blvd, NELA 3431 Portola Ave, NELA 4062 N Verdugo Rd, NELA 4364 N Eagle Rock Blvd, NELA 6336 York Blvd, NELA 6524-44 N Figueroa Ave, NELA 7101 N Figueroa St, NELA 11802 W Washington Blvd, Palms 12904-12910 W Palms Blvd, Palms 4470 S Centinela Ave, Palms 10611 S Hoover St, SCLA 1431 W Jefferson Blvd, SCLA 1500 W 51 Pl, SCLA 3760,3762,3764 S Normandie Ave, SCLA 4320 1/2 S Vermont Ave, SCLA 8039 S Vermont Blvd, SCLA 9506 S Van Ness Ave, SCLA 9510 S Vermont Ave, SCLA 5600 S Central Ave, SELA 975 E Jefferson Blvd / 1046 E 46 St, SELA 12445 Moorpark St, Sherman Oaks 1639 Silver Lake Blvd/1638 N Rendell Pl, Silver Lake 8422 La Tuna Canyon Rd, Sunland 14124 Victory Blvd, Van Nuys 5455 Van Nuys Blvd, Van Nuys 7238 Van Nuys Blvd, Van Nuys 7650 Haskell Ave, Van Nuys 2230 W Jefferson Blvd, W Adams 2801 W 54 St, W Adams 2905 Exposition Pl, W Adams 3008 W Hyde Park Blvd, W Adams 5500 1/2 Rodeo Rd, W Adams 8110 Airport Blvd, Westchester 2333 W Beverly Blvd, Westlake 1420 N Coil Ave, Wilmington 1624 W Pacific Coast Hwy, Wilmington 444 E Lomita Ave, Wilmington 537 N Figueroa St, Wilmington 260 S Mariposa, Wilshire 3053 Olympic Blvd, Wilshire 630 Shatto Pl, Wilshire 645 N Normandie Ave, Wilshire 7461 Beverly Blvd, Wilshire 903 S Crenshaw Blvd, Wilshire 11600 Wilshire Blvd, WLA 2201 Beverly Glen Blvd, WLA 14524 Keswick St, Van Nuys (shared with Spectrasite, whoever they are) Cingular/T-Mobile (36) 5959 Topanga Canyon Blvd, Canoga Park 445 S Figueroa St, Centre City 727 N Broadway, Centre City 816 S Grand Ave, Centre City 22601 W Santa Susana Pass Rd, Chatsworth 8401-13 Fallbrook Ave, Chatsworth 13300 S Estrella Ave, Harbor 4477 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood 5533 Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood 800 N Vermont Ave, Hollywood 14621 Nordhoff St, Mission Hills 9825 N Woodley Ave, Mission Hills 12020 W Chandler Blvd, N Hollywood 5161 N Cartwright Ave, N Hollywood 5531 N Lankershim Blvd, N Hollywood 1324 Cypress Ave, NELA 4855 York Blvd, NELA 951 W La Loma Rd, NELA 13480 W Maxella Ave, Palms 3500 S Overland Ave, Palms 4032 1/2 Del Rey Ave, Palms 14930 W Ventura Blvd, Sherman Oaks 1712 Glendale Blvd, Silver Lake 2755 Fruitdale St, Silver Lake 2977 N Alessandro St, Silver Lake 8400 W Beachy Ave, Sun Valley 14130 Riverside Dr, Van Nuys 7238 Van Nuys Blvd, Van Nuys 2232 Lincoln Blvd, Venice 1000 S Corning St, Wilshire 145 S Fairfax Ave, Wilshire 302 N Alexandria Ave, Wilshire 425 S Shatto Pl, Wilshire 5657 Wilshire Blvd, Wilshire 11660 W Santa Monica Blvd, WLA 2025 Ave of the Stars, WLA Nextel (12 - one shared with Sprint) 2301 N Sepulveda Blvd, Brentwood 800 S Hope St, Centre City 5425 Santa Monica Blvd, Hollywood 6565 Sunset Blvd, Hollywood 1234 E 58 St, SELA 3625 S Grand Ave, SELA 2333 Fletcher St, Silver Lake 5741 W Jefferson Blvd, W Adams 9750 Airport Blvd, Westchester 1654 Wilshire Blvd, Westlake 515 N Larchmont Blvd, Wilshire Sprint (12) 100 N Bel Air Rd, Bel Air 11280 Chalon Rd, Bel Air 11514 Orum Rd, Bel Air 1291 Stradella Rd, Bel Air 1068 N Villa Grove Dr, Brentwood 22601 Santa Susana Pass Rd, Chatsworth 19335 W Olivos Dr, Encino 4253 Mooncrest Pl, Encino 3315 Durrand Ave, Hollywood 3949 Los Feliz Blvd, Hollywood 12050 Ventura Blvd, Sherman Oaks 3171 Los Feliz Blvd, NELA (shared with Nextel) Verizon (17) 13300 Paxton St, Arleta 20140 Sherman Way, Canoga Park 9341 Shirley Ave, Chatsworth 8202 Sepulveda Blvd, Mission Hills 9612 N Van Nuys Blvd, Mission Hills 10920 Victory Blvd, N Hollywood 12301 Sherman Way, N Hollywood 10201 N Reseda Blvd, Northridge 6730 White Oak Ave, Reseda 10771 W Sherman Way, Sun Valley 11157 Orcas Ave, Sunland 12849 Magnolia Blvd, Van Nuys 14608-14 Burbank Blvd, Van Nuys 16153 W Victory Blvd, Van Nuys 5170 Sepulveda, Van Nuys 6920 Van Nuys Blvd, Van Nuys 800 S Vermont Ave, Wilshire
Wow! Thanks for that great write up ZaphodB! That must have taken you a while to look through all those meetings and organize that info. I did the same thing back in 2001 and Sprint was the one who had the most applications then. It seems AT&T is expanding the most this year. You're right about it taking approx. 6 months to build a site under normal circumstances. But let's say the site was approved by the zoning admin. but then appealed by NIMBY'S to the board of Zoning appeals, regional planning commissions, and in rare instances even the LA city council. It might take many additional months/years to finally get approved or denied. Even if the sites are approved the carrier might decide not to build the site after all because of changes in build out plans, leasing problems, high costs, etc. But my guess is that most of these sites will be built sooner or later. I'm really hoping that Sprint was able to pull off a few sites in those extremely tough areas. I know that some have probably been denied.
Wow ZaphodB! I can't thank you enough for your time. As someone who lives in the troubled Silver Lake area, I appreciate your work greatly. As of now, Verizon is the ONLY carrier I can get at my house. But hopefully that will soon change...
Wow, great research ZaphodB. I'm sorry to see that AT&T is not building in Santa Monica where they have huge dead zones. As you and others have pointed out, it's probably the NIMBY mentality. If you have the time and inclination, how about the same research for San Francisco area?
The sites that ZaphodB listed are ONLY those in the city of LA itself. They do not include Santa Monica.
Nice work! Wish Nextel had more sites, not that I care about the west coast being on the east coast, but I hope they are still building out their Network. Tim Donahue on Squak Box said that "coverage is not a problem.....we have built out the network....... new vocoders to improve capacity, blah blah blah". Wondering if he was just trying to appease stock holders concerns about future capex. Some permits here have/ and are about to expire after 12 months without new sites being built. Question: When mentioning Nextel "sharing" a site with Sprint, I am assuming you mean co-location, Correct?
dandydon i know this is off topic but where did you find that avatar (the java inside one) i'd like to find a higher resolution one so i can use it for something
HEY! OFFTOPIC! Don't make me get all moderator on your heinie! (okay, kidding). I love it. I'd like to photoshop it into something else myself and get it put on a t-shirt at cafepress. As for Santa Monica... Jebus Mice, have you ever been to one of their City Council sessions? Holy buckets, it's like Government-as-written-by-Mel-Brooks. They're ALMOST (but not quite) as bad as Berkeley. It surprises me not at all that there is no coverage north of Montana. Oh no oh no, your home's value might go from 2.38 million to 2.378 million, oh God oh God!
So, this is why the NIMBY's get all up in arms....the property value will decrease? Also, would they be so quick to say NO NO NO if they NEEDED a tower because their phone wouldnt pick up a signal in front of the fireplace? I am sure that research of yours took a lot of time Zap; thanks so much!
Wonderful job ZaphodB!!! I really appreciate the information you have provided. I don't think the general public understands the complexity of getting a cell tower built.
Not only do some of us not know the complexities of getting one built, some of us wouldnt know what one looked like even if we were standing in front of it. Thanks again Larry for the picture you sent me.
Santa Monica and Thousand Oaks is by far one of the most difficult jursdications to work with in the LA area...I had a project in Santa Monica that is still languishing since 1999!!!! The ZA approved the project but the ARB (architectural review board) didn't like the installation..."popsicle sticks" on a 27' single story building...best design. Anyway...it's still going...it's not only NIMBY'ism but city government that slows site development.
hehe. i have the same pic except it is the INTEL INSIDE logo with the IDIOT OUTSIDE underneath. I cropped it and sent it to my phone as wallpaper. This replaced my last one which was just the plain EVIL INSIDE logo that has been out for a bit. but since these phones run java nowadays I liked dannydons! yes I am one of those fools that customizes their phones (though not with flashing lights and disco balls but just wallpaper and some ringers. my favourite being my MR. T 'pity the foo' tirade) oh and to put something on topic so I dont get in trouble ....thanks for the indepth report on cell sites
Yep Santa Monica is terrible. They denied a joint Sprint/Nextel application to build a site on Lincoln Blvd. last year. I believe Thousand Oaks also denied a proposal from Sprint and Cingular to locate at a water tank earlier this year. What a shame.
Listening to Nextel's confernce call today, it makes a little more sense as to why they aren't aggressively putting up new sites. (Indicate 12) With software enhancements turning the Network from 3:1 to 6:1 coupled with new vocoders in the new falcon handsets they should be able to double capacity as well make the network more efficient. They said 40% of the sites in 2000 were capacity sites, instead of quality sites, and that most users didn't notice much of an improvement if any. Waste of $$$ Actually the pic was made for a wallpaper on an i95cl, uploaded from idencentral.com or somewhere, can't remeber. I used it as a pic when powering up the phone (replaces the T9 image), and made it for a wallpaper. I don't do the flashing lights, antenna's and all.... I do like loading .jad and .jar files for JAVA programs though and putting in any midi file found on line as a ringer.
Found two more Sprint sites under construction today! Another clock tower at Beach Blvd. & La Mirada in Buena Park and a palm tree site at the 60 Frwy & Indiana St. in the LA/Boyle Heights area. Sprint is really on an end of the year roll! 30 new sites coming on in LA/OC in the next two months!
Hey Larry... got a ques for you (or anyone else who can answer.. "foofighter...got your ears on? ") A Microcell was put up on the street Village Center drive near my g/f's house... it's right behind the ralphs shopping ctr on Garden Grove & Beach right in front of Crosspointe Village (the condo complex). If you are going south on Beach, right right on Village Ctr, it'll be on the right hand side on a light pole as you pass Red Robin... Any idea whose that is?
Interesting. I'll have to try and get over there soon and look for it. I tried again to find the other microcell you said was on Bake near the Toyota dealer but came up empty again. Weird huh?
larry come to jersey for a few weeks. Ill arm you with a 5300 phone. track me down some sites and send me the pictures!
It's a light pole as your driving down Bake from Irv. Ctr. Drv. It'll be on your right hand side.... the last light pole before you get on the 5 south...
Yep that's where I was looking. Next time I'm going to actually park and get out of my car and walk over there.
hehe...you crack me up larry tell ya what.. .i'll take my intel cam out there tomorrow and post a pic of it.
Sounds good. Thanks. I'm thinking it might be a Sprint site because I get a full signal there but can't locate any Sprint antennas near by. I can usually spot these things so easily so it's a mystery to me why I can't seem to find it. Even foofighter said he looked and couldn't find it either.
Will do! providing it doesn't rain tomorrow... The one I'm growing ever-more curious about is the one by my g/f's house....on Village Ctr. Larry...in your infinite wireless wisdom...how do you find out whose cell or even microcell it is? I'm thinking FCC but can't find anything... the one on bake...i get full signal there too, but i believe there's another micro down on the corner of research & hubble...so that too may be either sprint or cingie/T-mobile...
No they wouldn't be filed with the FCC. That's only for 200 FT + towers. I can tell by looking at the equipment boxes/cabinets on regular sites but micro cells might be more difficult. I'll probably be able to tell but I'd have to see it in person.
if the rain lets up today, i'll take a pic on my lunch break...otherwise It'll have to wait until monday. I'll see if i can get a pic of the one by my g/f's house over the weekend. how can you tell? they don't seem to be labled...they all look the same
