If I get my own equipment from Ebay and activate it on Cingular can I avoid a contract? I have read that it is possible but that I lose the promos. What is considered a promo nowadays? Is the N&W a promo? MTM? or is it something else?

I have a cingular Sierra Aircard 860 for sale. All you need is a sim card. I not sure if you can get service without a contract thou. I think you can get a 1 yr one.
    PM if interested in aircard.

Pay as you go. Just buy airtime in advance!
Cheaper on Tmobile if you buy a $100 chunk of time, lasts a year.

Current promotional element is M2M. You can get DT mins and NW (5K or UNL depending on PP level) w/o a contract, but you are still required to accept the terms and conditions of service. Getting it done through a store is problematic, as most agents don't like losing the commission, but that way you can get something in writing, which you should frame to avoid losing. Over the phone is workable, but make sure the paperwork that you get supports no contract.

    I believe it is possible.
I know you can go in with an unlocked phone & get a contract with just buying a SIM.
As for what's considered Promo's I don't know if they consider N&W and M2M promo's any longer, but they could reduce or eliminate them, again I am not sure what they consider promo's any longer.

As others have suggested, you might be better off with a pre-paid phone/plan.

If all I would lose is M2M, that's a pretty sweet deal. Just got to find somebody to do it. I work for a company that has a corporate discount with Cingular, so I need a postpaid plan to get the discount, prepaid does not work for the discount.

I've been month to month for 2 years on a 29.99 blue Regional TDMA plan with 320 anytime, 1000 NW. Thanks to the wonderful surcharge, a 39.99 plan is now within reason. I'd go to T-Mobile but I just don't like the looks of the coverage map in New England. Cingular map looks more promising but I don't want to be stuck in a contract in case it doesn't work out like the map.

Discount additions are handled by web at www.cingular.com/discounts. You must enter your work e-mail address and cell number, and they send follow-up instructions to your e-mail address to follow through on getting the discount added.

Be warned that if you apply for the discount, Cingular makes you sign a 2 yr contract with them. I went through the same thing when I had my corporate discount added.

What do you get, two weeks where you can back out of the deal with no penalty? I am pretty sure it is at least two weeks.

Sign a contract, get a nice shiny new phone for free, take said phone all over the areas in which you are concerned. If the coverage is good, keep the phone, the M2M mins, the NW mins....if not, take the phone back for a full refund.

    Pretty straight forward.

Cingular's trial period is 30 days back to point of sale.
