Currently, I have a Droid X... I can turn off the wifi feature on an ipad and my MacBook Pro and pair either of the devices to my Droid X via bluetooth... now, even though there is NO wifi connection, I can get an internet connection through the bluetooth using my Droid X as a ad-hoc hotspot... I'm able to get email, surf the web, etc, all through the bluetooth... I'm not using the personal hotpot feature on my phone, nor am I paying for any additional data other than my $20/mo plan for the Droid X basic data... What I want to know is if I dump the Droid and get an iPhone, will I be able to do the same thing? If not, it may be a dealbreaker for me NOT to get the iPhone, but I'm a Mac gal at heart and wanna get the iphone and ipad... Thanks!
I think you can with the iPhone, but you would have to jailbreak it first and use iFile to change some settings. I haven't tried it on mine, though. Also, if you have an unlimited data plan you could jailbreak and use a free app called PdaNet which will allow you to tether your iPhone with your other iDevice. I use it with my 4S and the new iPad. I just downloaded another jailbreak tethering app that I've used in the past called "MyWi". This app has the Bluetooth tethering feature that you are looking for. Turns out this app is working better for tethering my 4S with my iPad so I think I'll be using it more often... So, it looks like you can do Bluetooth tethering using your regular phone data plan, but not without jailbreaking the iPhone first. This is what the MyWi app looks like on the iPhone. The top of the screen displays how much data you've used so it's easy to keep track of. Sent from my iPhone 4S using Tapatalk.
I don't plan to jailbreak an iphone if I get one, but PDAnet would still work via bluetooth?? That's too bad that iphone doesn't have that feature... chalk +1 for Android... *sigh*
Look into this. http://thenextweb.com/apps/2012/03/...ew-web-based-tethering-tool-for-iphone-users/ I got itether from tether.com before it got pulled. Now they offer a web base solution. I tried the first but not the second method. But I really have no need to tether. Might be worth a try. http://tether.com/ Sent from my iPhone 4S using Tapatalk
Of course most of this now comes from the carriers, not just ATT anymore, but all carriers using the iPhone. The future is the same for Android OS. Google has recently removed tethering apps from the legit Android 'App Store', but they can be found elsewhere and rooting (Jailbraking) will be necessary to bypass. However, Verizon will be mirroring ATT and 'sniff' out tethering with the follow up warning SMS for limited data plans or termination of any unlimited plan. Legit tethering on ATT (iPhone or Android) isn't too bad, because you will need more data eventually. The extra 25$ gives you 3Gb more (above the current 2Gb), and more importantly it can be turned on/off monthly and is even prorated for the month. I believe Verizon does the same. Pretty much how the 3G/ LTE works for the iPad. Fortunately the smartphone satisfies my needs for checking emails and browsing well enough, that I have little need for tethering...and of course wifi is available in most places. If in a hotel room, where a wired internet is only available, I plug in my MacBook and use it as a personal hotspot for the iPhone/iPad. That's legit and free to do using Apple native system software. If you have to use tethering for home use or whatever...that can be a large data consumer...and the US carriers at least are cracking down on that. So the future of free tethering, via JB or rooting, doesn't look good. Maybe consider that in your selection of a phone. Verizon plays dumb about blocking tethering Apps
It is very easy and has been part of the Mac OS for many years. Under system preferences, you turn on internet sharing, and the mac becomes a wifi hot spot for your other wifi devices. So basically, wire your internet to your Mac, and use the Mac's wifi under System Prefs to share it. You make a name for your personal hotspot, and other devices will see it. Takes 2 seconds and very intuitive. I use wifi. Perhaps it can be done via BT, idk. Here is one of many google results for help with this. Works great! Unfortunately, neither iOS or Android OS is perfect, which is why I jailbreak my iDevices while Android users resort to rooting their phones. That said, I believe PdaNet will do Bluetooth tethering as well, but not without jailbreaking which you said you don't plan on doing.... If you want to stick with Android I read somewhere that PdaNet is also available for Android and should allow you to do Bluetooth tethering. Sent from my LTE iPad using Tapatalk HD.
Looking at the set-up video in the link above, it is correct, but it sets up your WiFI from the macbook to a wired output (out of the Mac book). The outcome doesn't quite match the text of the help article. Instead, the same procedure is used, but you wish to have the Share your Connection From be 'ethernet' and To Computer Using be WiFi ( which will come up when the correct source is used). Sorry for not checking that!
