As an owner of a V710, which I no longer use, I never fully understood how problematic the blocking of many Bluetooth options by Verizon really was. I've never really had a need to move info back and forth between the phone and other Bluetooth devices. With my recent acquisition of the Motorola Q, I wondered if there was a way to move contacts from my formerly-used Nokia 6256i (which does NOT have OBEX blocked) to the Q. After reading the manuals for both, I figured it out. I was able to move every contact from the 6256i to the Q quite easily. This saved me from having to key in each entry (about 100 of them) manually into the Q. For the heck of it I tried to see if the V710 would "find" the 6256i (and vice-versa), it couldn't. Yes, I know Verizon does have some kind of contact saving option, but I don't mind this occasional inconvenience because I normally only change Verizon phones every couple of years. This is something GSM has CDMA beat on, but that's beside the point. BTW, I have to say that the Q has an incredible display. I haven't seen anything so clean and clear. So far it is an awesome smartphone. It is much more user-friendly than I thought it would be (though it still has that "Windows" feel, which is not necessarily good or bad). Just wanted to share my experience with a succesful OBEX exchange between Verizon phones (which is generally considered an oxymoron...)
If it was easy to put your own ringtones on your phone then you wouldn't buy as many ringtones from them. Its just that simple. -jay
@Jay2TheRescue None of the networks in the UK prevent people from installing their own ringtones and I haven't heard them complaining about their ringtone sales.
Despite Verizon's draconian methods, I can't complain about my service from them. I've had them for 12 years and never had any problems or issues. They do what they do. Until I have an issue that changes my mind, I'm not planning on leaving them, even if I don't agree with some of their practices. Every carrier has that one (or many) thing(s) that bug the out of subscribers. They are ALL the same, no matter how different they seem to be. For the poster who continually calls them the "Evil Empire", why are you even with Verizon?? You could have gotten "SoCal" numbers and a RAZR phone WITH uncrippled Bluetooth from Cingular or T-Mobile?
Well that would be an idea to have a number in Southern Cal like San Diego or El Centro to be local to some old friends over in that area. Some I have not talked to since 1999. Wonder if Verizon got Vodafone's 45% of the Cellco Partnership could James Earl Jones be the spokesman for VZW along with Paul Marcarelli :browani: Long Live the Dark Side of Wireless
I'm not complaing about there sevice. I'm complaining about their crippling of the "Motorola" phone. You're right I should bow down to Verzion "EVIL EMPIRE" because I really do not have a choice since Alltell does not have native coverage and T mobile & Cinglular have terrible service. I'm glad local car dealerhsips do NOT have the corner on the market that Verizon "EVIL EMPIRE" does. Could you imagine that GM (Motorla) puts out a standard car that has standard equipment such as BRAKES (BLUETOOTH OBEX) and a dealership saying if you want to stop the car you have to pay extra!! OK lets not get that extreme. Let's say GM (Motorola) puts out a car that has standard equipment Air Conditioning (BLUE TOOTH OBEX) and a local dealership says lets disable that since we have a corner on the market and you need to pay us to get the Air Conditioner to work. I guess you've already read other threads that I wrote since you knew I need the SoCal native coverage. You ask why I have Verizon "EVIL EMPIRE" I only have 1 line of Verizon "EVIL EMPIRE". I have it because they have native coverage in SoCal and I get a CORP DISCOUNT. That's why I've kept 4 lines of Alltel roaming on Verizon "EVIL EMPIRE" without Alltel saying "you're on Verizon "EVIL EMPIRE" and we will charge you extra". Motorola says let's have a vibe and ring feature. Verizon "EVIL EMPIRE" deletes that choice. Gotta love it. HUH? Good thing there are work arounds the roadblocks that the EVIL EMPIRE puts up!!! Just glad you love the way they cripple the phones and put the verizon 'EVIL EMPIRE" UI on the phones. I guess the majority of Verizon customers don't know any better or like paying for services that Motorola intended to have. Yeah the copywrite arguement is weak.. I want to transfer my own pictures I've taken on the phone by BLUETOOTH and Verizon "EVIL EMPIRE" puts the CB aka C*CK BLOCK on the transfer.... ________________________________ VERIZON WE NEVER STOP WORKING TO CRIPPLE PHONES AND MAKE MORE MONEY OFF YOU!
The only way they'll ever listen is if you talk with your wallet and feet. Continuing to pay them every month only perpetuates the problem. The only way they'll change is if enough people leave. I personally don't care about OBEX.
I could care less whether they cripple their phones or not. I have not owned any Verizon phone with their UI on it. Nor would it matter to me if I did. You may not like their tactics, but most people (who aren't in to mobile phones as much as the members on this site are) could probably care less what Verizon does as long as their phones work and have coverage. Verizon keeps adding more people to their service than any other carrier has for quite some time. They must be doing something right. The whole OBEX issue has not seemed to have affected them at all. They are a business, and they will do what they please. BTW, they have begun to ease up on the BT restrictions. The Q is the first big example of that. EXACTLY!! Well said.
You must if you make a point to not own a Verizon phone As for lossenign the grip on BT features, if they don't they will loose a large group of customers. Verizon values their business customers, and while far from Sprint on feature laden handsets, they still are better than many (it is a CDMA thing, IMO). As they market the additional features of phones (many of which are sisters to the handsets offered by competitors) non business customers will increasingly become aware of such things and want to use them. A perfect example being new members that find this site while performing an internet search to figure out why they can not do things on their VZW handset.
