I am thinking of upgrading to the BlackBerry Storm when my contract ends in a little less than four weeks but something is really confusing me. :confused:I have heard from all over that there is no way to use a generic plan with a blackberry on verizon, yet i've asked people that said they don't have to pay an extra $30 per month for a data plan. Would this happen to just be for other smartphones?

..I've also heard you get three months free?, is this true?...

As far as I know, you can only use a Blackberry plan with a Blackberry phone. It is mandatory. Otherwise the BB phone won't work properly....At least this is what it is supposed to be, though there may be that 1 in 20 million chance somebody has a BB phone without a BB plan, but I wouldn't get my hopes up that you'll be able to do this too.

The $1.99-per-MB plan is an option only for currently released smartphones (excluding BB). It is also available for other HTML-capable non-smartphones (the Voyager being an example).

As for the three months free thing? I highly doubt it. After all we ARE talking about Verizon. Though I can't say it's impossible, again, I wouldn't count on getting a discount like that.

From their new set of plans coming out at the launch of the Storm, yes. Data plans with Verizon are never cheap.

Blackberry phones are setup to work with completely different servers to handle their internet and email and all other data that the phone may ever use........these servers are seperate from the carriers........so basically any Windows Mobile phones use the regular carriers data but with Blackberry's the internet tunnels through the carriers internet to the Blackberry internet service....

    moving on

Blackberry's work just fine without their data plan however the only thing you can do with it is make calls and text.......as well as the local applications and games on the phone like block breaker and calendar

it's easier to get away with this on AT&T and T-Mobile because you can buy a Blackberry seperately and simply pop your SIM card in and your done........with Sprint and Verizon you have to contact them to change phones........because of this they are aware when a customer is using a Blackberry and therefore will force them to get the data plan

Hey I also had some questions about the different Blackberry plans. I've never owned a BB but I am thinking about getting the Storm. I was just wondering what they are talking about with the monthly memory allowance. I'm assuming this means they limit the amount of information you can receive over the internet, but does this apply to surfing the web or just downloads? for example if I were checking my facebook or searching on google would that cost me a portion of my monthly allowance? if so about how much does it take up?

If you're talking about the data limit, I wouldn't worry about it unless you'll be downloading/uploading gigabytes of data. From what it sounds like you want to do? I think you'll be just fine.

If you don't already use My Verizon online account management, you should after getting the Storm. You can monitor your data usage and this should tell you how much you're really using.

Great! Thanks for the feed back! I'll do alittle more research on it but i'm sure your right, i should be fine with the smaller memory allowance.

I have been on a BB plan since February. Basically, you have to have at a minimum a $30/mo BIS plan to be able to have the email/internet set up on the phone. You can then add whatever voice plan you want as well as text/MMS plans.

I have never come close to the 5GB limit that is discussed on these boards, but when I've asked VZW CSR's about the 5GB limit, they say it's "unlimited" which means no limit. So anyway, hope that helps!

well if they say it isn't unlimited then there's an issue selling it because then they have to convince the customer that they wont even get close to that liomit.........Blackberry's prolli use the most data though so like i said you might do maybe half that in a month if you really put the effort forward

It is unlimited for email and internet on the device... you cannot use the phone as a modem. If you manage to surpass the "limit" it is likely that you are breaking the TOS. Also, on this plan, Verizon reserves the right to throttle your internet speed if the soft cap is surpassed.

In order to use the phone as a modem, you have to pay an additional $30 fee. If you go past the 5GB limit, the overages are $0.25/MB... and Verizon does not sell the phone-as-modem as an unlimited plan:)

I have been using smartphones for the last 15 months with a data plan for internet/email and the most data I have ever used was 3GB on my former Motorola Q... and I was streaming a radio station almost daily. Most months I use almost 1GB of data

Oh man. I remember the days when we could get a Mobile Office Kit for practically any phone to tether to the internet w/o paying an additional fee (besides using minuets).

    Am i dateing myself?
