My sister gave my daughter her almost brand new BB8700c. My daughter doesn't need BB plan. Just to browse the internet and use AIM. I was wondering, if i download OperaMini, can i just get her the $19.99 MediaMax unlimited or will that be violating some rules. Thanks.
Technically you need one of the Blackberry Personal plans to not be in violation of at&t's terms of service regarding data. However, I believe I noticed the other day that when combined with a voice plan on the same line, the data plans have a $15 discount, making the Blackberry Personal plan with unlimited data $19.99 per month - same as MediaNet unlimited. Blackberry Personal Plans ETA: Although take a close look at it, as some of the plans may only have a $5 discount when combined with a voice plan, which would make it $29.99/month. (I cannot locate it at the moment, but the other day I saw a table that contained all the various types of data plans, and I thought it had a footnote reference that the pricing reflected a $15 discount - and indeed at least one of the tethered plans that I looked at was $15 less than the rates published on the "sales" pages for the data plans.)
If you do not need the email functions of the Blackberry data plans I'd recommend the $19.99 Smartphone Connect Unlimited plan. That's what I'm using on my HTC Tilt. -Jay
Some phones they do, some they don't. I don't know what clues them in. You can see what phone they have registered when you look at your account online. My Motorola A845 reports as a Motorola V3xx, My "classic" V3 reports as a V3, My iPAQ 6515 reports as the same. My Tilt, however never registers. When I look online it shows the phone that was used previously. In any event, the BB features will not be available as they will not be included in your plan. If you tried to use then you would just get an error message. -Jay
on a blackberry the "globes" or rather the internet/media net icons' willnot show up without a blackberry plan, and neither with the email setup icon. or at least in my experience. now on some phone such as a black jack or a tilt, generally Windows mobile PDA's it is easy to "cheat" the system and skin by on a media max or a smartphone plan, at least until they see that your on it, but with the blackberrys, because of the way they are designed, this is generally not the case.
The OP stated that they did not need email. It was mentioned earlier that email will only work on a BB plan.
yea i know. i am 99% sure that the media net/browser globes on a blackberry will not show up on a media max plan. only on a blackberry plan. i dont know how to explain how they do it but i have some experience with this and they have rigged it to work that way somehow.
I seem to remember others in the past stating that they used the $19.99 Media Net w/ a BB, just no email. Maybe this has been disabled on newer models. -Jay
Yeah, I believe its similar to what I have. I am running my HTC Tilt on the $19.99 Smartphone Connect plan because I don't use the email. -Jay
setting up email on an Xpressmail device is like trying to read one of those awful wheres waldo books, at first it sounds fun and easy, and after about 15 minutes your goin "wtf" sort of my favorite part about blackberrys, you punch in your address and password and your good as gold. the only exception is corporate email or a hotmail account.
i know someone who has a Blackberry Pearl and on hers there are two globes......one for MEdia NET and one for Blackberry Web or whatever the Blackberry internet program is called now here is what i heard from a Sprint rep.......it may be in violation of terms but the way a sore tech support said it to me.....the Blackberries have hard programmed proxy settings in them that force them to access the Blackberry data network......the way this rep made it seem.......Sprint wasnt supplying the data at all.......they were trafficking all the data to the RIM web service.......which is why i would have to pay for a Blackberry plan even though I already have unlimited data........Sprint or whatever carrier you're on doesnt handle the Blackberry data......they just forward it.......idk.......i think it might be a lie just to keep people from trying i mean look at all the AT&T customers who get around it..........
