i am moving to las vegas in a couple of weeks. i was wondering what company has the best reception in las vegas, especially around UNLV? Past posts said sprint was good, but then on sprint-sucks.org it was the opposite. whats your opinion? thanks
I have done some work in Vegas, and go there a few times a year. I have had good luck with Verizon there and ok luck with Verizon. I have friends with Sprint and it worked so so for them, I have better coverage in the casinos. I have driven around UNLV, but have not used my phones there.
It's unfortunate that people keep spreading that web site around which is over 3 years old and is mostly rubbish. Anything on that site should be taken as a grain of salt.
ATT worked well there too...however, I found it funny that I ended up with LD charges when I was told LV was part of my home calling area...go figure?!
Yes me too with ATT dig. advantage you get charged long distance when you leave california! even thought parts of nevada (including vegas) are in your home area! go figure?
Bombersun, First, consult the Las Vegas Wireless Ratings page, mostly for a list of the carriers that serve LV. The ratings get better for carriers that provide wider coverage. If you don't leave town, you can price-shop among carriers. At UNLV, from what I have seen, or read in newsgroups, there isn't a bad carrier. It would depend on where else you would want to use your phone. -Bill
I use Sprint PCS for personal and Cingular for business. I have used ATT, Verizon and Nextel and have found Sprint to have the best overall coverage and call quality. Plus, Sprint offers the best coverage on 95 South heading to Laughlin and the best coverage in the Laughlin area.
Yes Sprint PCS does have good coverage. There is a few things which are equally important that SprintPCS doesn't have. The most important in my book, good customer service. Sprint has the worst customer service of any company I have ever bought services from, other than AOL which is so bad, it belongs in it's own category. For the longest time they have pushed people to use *4 to check their minutes. They will not check them for you in the Sprint PCS stores any more. Now, as of Aug 28, they are going to make people use their minutes to find out how many minutes they have! So you dial *4, you use minutes. It seems that signing a contract only works for Sprint. Usually when you sign a contract for a period, that locks your service plan in for the contract period so you aren't getting rate increases until you sign another contract. Apparently you are locked in and Sprint get's to keep adding charges for things and changing what normally free features will end up using your minutes. I'm hearing a rumor that Sprint PCS is going to start charging their customers a per minute charge to check your voice mail during peak hours. 7am to 9pm I think. So I would suggest that any sprint customers that read this should call Customer "we dont" Care and inquire about this. I'm going to. Sprint really sucks. I'm either going to change companies when my contract expires or just ditch having a cell phone all together.
Update: Called Sprint PCS, the rep told me he hadn't heard anything about customers being charged a per minute fee to check voicemail during peak hours. However, dealing with Sprint for the last 2 years I've learned among their customer service reps, the cheer of the day is "Duh!" He also indicated that not only would we be charged minutes for using the automated system, but also for calling customer service from our phone is well. I remember them trying this once and my impression customer feed back was pretty harsh and it ended only a month after it started.
I've used both AT&T and Verizon in Las Vegas. Both are pretty good around town. In some buildings on the UNLV campus, however, AT&T reception is poor. In those same buildings, Verizon reception has been just fine. Mackie
for the AT&T people who got charged long distance in las vegas.....why even deal with calling areas and stuff like that? wouldnt it be simpler to have a sprint plan and basically use your phone anywhere in the country as long as you can pick up a sprint signal? Its that simple! It still boggles my mind why people STILL go to service providers with complicated plans, calling areas etc. As for sprint charging per minute voicemail during peak, where did you hear these rumors from? because as an employee I have not heard anything like that. Tell me where you heard that from and ill ask around to see if it is merely a rumor. I agree that it would totally suck if it were true. And yes sprint customer service is definitely a negative score on a 1-10 scale. I usually speak very highly of sprint. However I cant even bring myself to the defense of customer service. They are such a dumb bunch. I get so mad when they try to give me the run-around. And i work for sprint! My suggestion, call stores to speak to reps from now on. They are usually much more knowledgible.
i second that on the CS most of the timee; though i have gotten some excellent cs at times. as far as the charges go that you so grandly speak of while in contract; this is the only change i have seen for in contract customers is the *4 minute charge for airtime. it is a bit of an inconvenience and i disagree with it, we shall see how long it lasts; if you check your minutes a couple of times during the week after 9pm or on the weekends it will have no effect on your plan really since N&W minutes are plentiful (or use a few anytime minutes if during the day); or use the website it is still free. here are some changes you can really _____ about: unlike verizon who changes coverage areas for AC customers in contract. kinda a bit more serious than a *4 airtime charge. or nextel changing existing customers in contract N&W start time from 8pm to 9pm and next second billing to rounded up to the minute. at&t recently made some changes to people in contract ( i do not know what they were) but they must have been somewhat serious as they were gracious enough to let people have a month to get out of contract without paying the penalty. any other stories about things being changed in contract from any carrier feel free to share.
i recently went to las vegas for vacation. my uncle just got t-mobile with the samsung r225. surprisingly, he gets reception almost everywhere, with exception of the mgm basement/lobby. i have verizon and we compared the reception everywhere we went. even at lake meade, both of us received perfect reception. the circus circus lobby had poor reception with verizon and a little better with t-mobile. there was reception in nearly all hotels on the strip, including the hotels that are on the outskirts of the city (where the locals go to gamble and eat on buffet). i had about 0-1 bars at the new hyatt regency near the ritz-carlton (new hotels, but they look like an oasis since this is near an airforce base and looks like a desert). chinatown had good reception as well. good luck
I go to Vegas almost every year. Cheap tickets, and we fly America West there, so we usually stay over even if it's not our final destination. Verizon does a fine job there. Some dead spots for me were the Aladdin lobby (I could barely make a call, sounded like crap, analog). The casino floor was weak for Verizon too, but all the other hotels were great, I had GREAT reception in the MGM (casino area anyway), I thought maybe Verizon had repeaters in the hotel. Figures the only place with a problem is the hotel I stayed at this time, which the Aladdin for the price we got (70$ a night) was really nice. Nothing holds a candle to the Mirage though, I've stayed at those 2, Flamingo, Luxor, and Monte Carlo. The Flamingo and Aladdin are great for the prices. Glad you had fun there, I always do and I'm not even old enough to drink/gamble.
With my 8260 on ATT, I would say LV the one major city that I've had a significant amount of trouble with coverage. Staying at Bally's one time, I would have to stand out near the corner of LVB and Flamingo to complete a call at all.
