Best service for Amherst, Massachusetts

We currently have Verizon and are not thrilled with the connection. My husband often comments about all the dead spots in the grocery store..etc. He sees other people in the store not having trouble. Yes, I know the easiest thing to do would be for him to ask these people what they use ...but he hasn't. Don't know if it is the provider or the phone? Could it be the phone?

Anyway, we have decided we need a phone for me (Mom) and our 12 year old son (emergency use).

~What is the best service in Amherst, Massachusetts? I would also want to use it anywhere in the country...when we travel etc.

This is not our primary phone. We mainly use it for emergencies. It is vital that the school can get in touch me.
