In 7 days, I'll be relocating to Boca Raton, Florida from San Francisco, California. I will be making long distance calls to San Francisco, Salt Lake City, and Oahu. Please advise me on cellular phone carriers that provide the BEST reception and BEST coverage.

    Thanks.

P.S. I currently have AT&T and am open to other plans.

You'd be bringing your TDMA phone along, still operating in cellular A-band, from "challenging" to flat terain. You could easily stay with ATT, especially if you're satisfied with them. Have a look at Stanley Cline's roundup: SE wireless Info

You'll be able to compare plans before you arrive.

I'm a little south of you in plantation, fl, and i know that the service with sprint isn't that desireable in boca raton...only like 2 towers in the area. You can try verizon if you're not going to continue with at&t. I haven't experienced any problems with verizon throughout florida from miami to west palm beach all the way up to orlando.

Give Cingular some thought also. They have strong Florida coverage, especially in SE FL from back in the Bell South Mobility days. Like some other carriers, you can kick the tires around a couple weeks to see if your service is satisfactory.

I would like to help you if possible. I am exclusive Cingular Agent in Boca Raton, Florida. I have two stores East and West Boca Raton.
1 block east of I-95 on Palmetto Park Road in the Kmart Publix shopping center.
The other is located in the Woodfield at Regency Shopping Center at Yamato and Jog Road. The West Boca Store is opened 7 days a week. 561 994 1199.
I offer 15 day buyers remorse program and offer the lowest pricing on phones in Boca Raton.
Cingular has by far the best coverage in South Florida. They are an original operator since 1983 formerly known as Bell South. We have more towers then any other service provider in South Florida and the enitre state of Florida.
AT&T has some coverage issues in Boca as do other providers. While Cingular is not perfect they have the best coverage in the area.
I would be more then happy to discuss the area you may be moving to. Obviously if the phone does not work in your residenece you will return the phone within 15 days. So before we sell you we would identify any potential problems.

Good luck with your move and please come and shop my stores

My ads appear in Boca Raton Times and West Boca Raton Times every Wednesday. The Times are inserted into the Sun Sentinel every Wednesday and may also be found at various news agencies.

Something to think about...if you currently have promos with AT&T such as 8pm nights and weekends, etc... you can do a "customer on the move"...obtain a new phone number in Boca...and not lose your promos.

As for "Who has been in the market the longest?"...South Florida was a former McCaw Cellular (Cellular One) market that was purchased by AT&T in 1995. Their coverage and build out is strong with one minor exception...the Keys. AT&T sold their TDMA system in the Keys to Commnet last Spring....AT&T customers now roam on Cingular in the Keys and their service is not great....but regardless...the Keys are included as part of the home area for South Florida AT&T customers.

I do not have trouble in the Keys with my present phone. I ve used my service all the way to Key West. McCaw bought the system from a guy name Bill Ford. They did a good job building out the system. However, Cingular is stronger. Also, AT&T is in the process of their TDMA to GSM transition and its created issues on both sides of the technology. We never use to get a lot of converts from AT&T. Mostly Sprint , Voice Stream/Tmobile Verizon and then AT&T. Our AT&T converts have actually really picked up in the last several monnths. We have heard there is an increase of trouble areas for AT&T. This is what I hear. I have not used their system for since September when I too a trial on their GSM system.

Best advice is to take advantage of our trial period for 15 days. Your only responsible for the air time you use. Besides my people are very knowledgable about wireless and they will help you setting up a new phone and help to use the features. We do courtesy phone book transfer from old phone to new phone.
