I will be visiting Berea KY in a couple of weeks. Last year Verizon had coverage by the interstate, but it didn't extend very far east into Berea. Has it been improved since a year ago?

Is that on boarder of Verizon's network or in Cingular's network in KY?

VZW has no native coverage in Berea. You'll roam on Sprint; you can also roam on Cingular AMPS in places there is no Sprint coverage if you have a tri-mode phone. If you are on any plan other than the new no-roam America's Choice plan, you may need to set your phone to "Auto-B" to use Cingular (for some reason Cingular's SID is not in the PRLs for old plans, and VZW does not roam with Dobson)...although since you're from NJ your default should be Auto-B anyway.

Richmond is a severe problem zone for VZW customers because of unusable VZW signal from Lexington-Fayette spilling over for miles and keeping phones from switching to Sprint or Cingular, but Berea, thankfully, is generally OK. There is a small possibility you might need to "force" Sprint by reprogramming your phone to SID 4148 and setting it to "home only", but I personally don't think you'll have to do that.
