I've heard mixed reviews from my friends regarding AT&T GSM as it stands right now, but I may definitely give Cingular a look next year. There national footprint looks pretty impressive... We'll see...

Well since they both will be the same by next year, there footprint will be even nicer looking.

It will be nicer once they cover unbuilt areas and roaming partners do the same. As it stands today the coverage map you see right now won't change just because of the merger.

Good point bobolito, Hopefully they will work on the NJ, NY area when the merger is done, since when they do end the JV with T-Mobile & if they end roaming agreements with T-Mobile in this area, they will need to cover these spot's & improve coverage in some area's

Once the T-Mo JV ends, we'll still be able to roam on T-Mo (for up to 4 years), but we won't need them that much since AWS covers NJ much better than T-Mobile anyway.

Where I live, I know for a fact that Cingular has NO towers whatsoever. Does Cingular have any roaming agreements with AT&T at all? Or is it just T-Mobile and Cingular? And like you've seen me mention many times i have :censored: for service (1 or 2 bars). It will not improve because Cingular is just taking over the AT&T towers. Yet again, if they do have a roaming agreement here (Cingular with TMO).. then they will keep paying T-Mobile for years to come like the NJ thing? Anyone understand?

 On the maps for Cingular, El Paso is colored in orange on the GSM coverage map. That must mean they have roaming agreements there then with someone? Just no native coverage?

Ah yes, the wireless landscape will be interesting. With the combo of Cingular + ATTWS we now have a formidable competitor in the heavy-weight category against Verizon Wireless. It should help to spur competition. By the way, how many users will Cingular have after the takeover? Are they slated to be the biggest in terms of users after the takeover?

I've been with ATTWS (tdma), Sprint PCS and now Verizon. So far so good on a national scale...but my contract is up at the end of this year. It's been good so far with VZW especially since many other carriers were working on expansion and/or TDMA->GSM overlay plans.

At the end of this year when my contract is over I will review the current market and boy things have changed. The Cingular GSM overlay is done and they'll be working on expanding and incorporating the ATTWS coverage, which gives them an opportunity to duke it out with VZW on a national scale.

From my understanding, the Cingular rollover plan allows you to rollover minutes cumulatively for up to 1 year? I believe I've heard of people collecting an extra bank of 2000 anytime minutes or so due to the cumulative rollover...is that correct? Pretty good, especially those who have an up and down calling pattern and it hurts on the months you go over your calling plan.

What about those who have used Cingular GSM, Sprint PCS and Verizon? Do you notice a difference in terms of the voice quality between GSM and CDMA? The thought of going with the GSM camp is intriguing, especially so since my wife's family is in South America and once a year she travels to Germany on business -- so GSM does offer some intriguing convenience on a global roaming perspective. Plus the SIM chip and better battery life on many phones is an added bonus -- and I hate redoing my entire phonebook entry when buying a new phone.

Well we shall see. Hang tight.

I believe Sprint was the first carrier to cover the top 100 cities. I think they accomplished that about 3 or 4 years back.

Hopefully it will mean some improvements in Asheville. SunCom is awful in Asheville. I remember the one time I took my old SunCom TDMA phone down to Asheville. I couldn't believe how bad the coverage was.

My phone went into analog mode on the intersate once. It also hit several weak spots. I could barely use it in the Biltmore Square Mall. Across from the street I ate at some Chinese Buffet place and couldn't receive a signal inside. I had to go outside and even then my call sounded horrible. I finally had to step out into the parking lot and retry to make the call. It then sounded fine though.

SunCom worked well in downtown Asheville but every where else in Asheville it seemed quite bad to me. Cingular on the other hand I have found to be very good in Asheville.
