AUTOMATIC TIME & DATE UPDATE hi all, i currently have Sprint PCS phone and with sprint, i dont need to update the time & date on my cell, its updated automatically and even adjusts for daylight savings time. I will be switching to Verizon now... so just wanna know whether verizon does the automatic time update too?
No kidding. The first time I jumped time zones after getting Tmobile I almost missed an am meeting. I had had Sprint previously and was used to the auto update. Love the T720 on VZW, don't even need a watch
That's probably built into the CDMA spec. It's funny that they can update your phone date and time but not your PRL.
The auto time/date comes from the tower your phone is picking up. If you're on the border line between time zones and not sure if you can begin using off-peak time, just look at the time on your phone. It is coming from the tower that will connect your call this will charge you peak or off peak minutes. The towers can not update your PRLs since it's the other way around...where the PRL tells your phone which towers to connect to and in which order.
Joe, I don't understand what you mean by "its the other way around." But I know that on all systems except CDMA, roaming databases are stored in the phone and automatically updated by the provider.
Bobolito...I mean the time/date is sent from the tower you communicate meaning it goes from the tower to your phone. With PRLs, it goes from your phone to whatever tower your phone tells it to go to. I hope I'm not confusing you.
The major difference between TDMA and CDMA is that roaming updates are sent automatically from the tower in TDMA land, while they must be manually updated on CDMA. Apparently, it IS technologically related. As for time and date updates, Cingular is now sending them out to TDMA customers...the catch is your phone must support automatic time and date updates AND the feature must be turned on. The Motorola TDMA phones (120, V60) support this...as do the new Nokia phones (8265 and 6340 GAIT).
Ok Joe, you just confused the hell out of me!...lol...But I am sure that we are probably talking about the same thing but we just have different ways of explaining it. But just in case, are you saying that the phone is the one that programs the tower instead of the tower programming the phone? I would rather explain it this way: On CDMA, whenever you need a roaming list update you must request it manually, then the tower sends it to your phone. On TDMA and GSM, you don't need to do this as the updates are sent automatically from the provider. That's why I said that it's funny that CDMA can program your time/date and not your PRL. Parthery, what market is Cingular sending automatic time/date update? I had my phone set to auto for a while and I had to take it off because it was only screwing up the time. It would set the time to London Time Zone!
