    Hi,

We just got out of our Cingular contract & am looking for another cell phone carrier that covers this area well. If there is one. Ideally looking for it to be good as south as Portland & west through southern & central New Hampshire. But if I can get signal in the capital I'd be happy. I know Unicel & US Cellular claim service in this area, so would like anyone's opinion about that. Also, I'd like to stick w/ a pre-paid plan this time around, in case we need to drop the phone again because of no service. Never had one before, so any thoughts on the pre-paids these guys offer, or any other carrier in the area would be very helpful. I'm going back to school, so cheap is important now, too.

    Thanks!

I thought US Cellular had the best coverage in the greater Maine/New Hampshire area.

Thanks! It looks like that from their map, too, but I'm not sure if that the same map for the pre-paid plans. Any one know anything about Tracfone? We saw a display at Walmart & at least the phone was cheap. We're seeing roaming issues w/ the pre-paid plans, though.

    Thanks again for the replies!

I have had US Cellular in southern NH for the past 8 years and have been very happy with their service. They cover all of Maine, almost all of NH, and a good part of Vermont. Where they do not have coverage (Rockingham County and Strafford County NH and Mass. - RI - CT) they have roaming agreements with Verizon and Sprint. I have yet to encounter "no service" or an inferior digital signal, except in the far north regions.

If you stay in Maine - NH - VT a local plan would suit you fine. If you sometimes go into southern New England and New York, etc., see if you can get a Regional Plan (they are supposedly still available, but not advertised). Of course they also have National Plans.

US Cellular has a 30-day free trial period, so you have ample time to try out the phone and make sure it does the job for you. Verizon's trial is only 14 days.

I've had great service with a Kyocera KX-1, have had it for 11 months. Speakerphone, great sound, people on the other end think I am on a landline. It doesn't have a camera and MP3, but hey -- it's a PHONE. Cheap, too.

I have no personal experience with Unicel but they are foot dragging in converting their network to GSM. Also there have been one or two well publicized major outages in their network this year.

Thanks SO much! Not looking for a fancy phone, never use all the bells & whistles anyways. -way, do you happen to know anything about US Cellular's pre-paid/no contract plans? Or the coverage available without the roaming option on contracts? That's our biggest concern right now is no contract = no roaming. The area is too sparse to not be able to roam when needed.

    Thanks again,

You can check the US Cellular web site (www.uscc.com) or call US Cellular Customer Service at 1-888-944-9400. They should be able to answer your questions. I have no experience with their prepaid plans, but their pricing seems to be a lot more reasonable than the pricing on Verizon's prepaid.
