While out in the southeast, roaming on ATT I got hit with this message.

"AT&T Free Msg: Alert - Your data use on other U.S. carriers' networks is over 100MB - 4X the amount provided in your Wireless Customer Agreement. Avoid data use or use Wi-Fi when your device says "Off Network" in the status bar."

The additional email said they would cut me off for the month if it continued. No charges to me. I think it was Celluar One, 310.

I vaguely remember this, but forgot about it completely. So 10gb is for only ATT directly not roaming partners?

Is CellularOne still around? I thought AT&T bought them a while ago?

Don't confuse MCC (country code) and MNC (network code). 310 is the MCC for the USA. According to wikipedia, the MNC 310 used to belong to T-Mobile, but is being phased out (?)

List of mobile network codes in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

From the data on Cellumap, T-Mobile seems to use MNC 260 or 26 in the south east. Most of the smaller local networks around there are CDMA, so I don't think you can roam on them (does IP5 have an active CDMA modem?)

Strange, I thought AT&T had the best GSM coverage in the US? Or were you roaming maybe on a LTE network? (VZW?)

It's currently 311-40. I couldn't remember the two digits for 310. The Navajo native told me it was Cellular One. Of course the reservation is it's own sovereign nation.

Att did me a favor by converting the code to 'off network' I can only see the code for a bit when searching for the carrier

Anyhow the point being that voice and text is fine when there is coverage, but data is limited to 25 Mb.

I've never seen an area so devoid of antennas. I can see for 80 miles and there is nothing. Yet so many high peaks to mount a few.

LTE? You jest. Not outside of Las Vegas.

You're lucky to get any data there at all. A lot of times when I was roaming in those areas it was voice/SMS only.

Oh, you're in the SouthWest (you wrote SouthEast in your OP). MNC 40 is Commnet:
    Commnet Wireless

I thought all these small carriers got eaten by the bigger ones. Guess there are still some left.

311 is also a MCC for the USA, but 310 is more popular. A Reservation, despite it's special status, wouldn't have a different country code.

I had the same experience in Monument Valley. The roaming data usage never showed on my bill or on OLAM, and the only way I was aware of it is my 900 told me that I needed to turn Roaming Data on to use data.

Good grief vf, you don't actually mean putting antennae on the high peaks of Monument Valley or other such places. What a mar on the gorgeous landscape that would be.

I remember cursing the Egyptian government for allowing a tall antenna behind the Luxor Temple, it was an eyesore and impossible to take a picture of a 6000 year old temple without an ugly antenna showing. I am glad the laws in this country do not allow that.

I don't need to use my cellphone that bad. ;)

    No antennas.

So when my phones doesn't display ATT, I should be aware that I have only 25-100 Mb of data allowed? The hotel wifi was so poor I had to use cellular data.

Thanks for the information, but has little to do with my posted question.

Thanks Quint101. Luckily ATT let me roam 4x without charging. I knew that I was off the network when the ATT logo was replaced by a number. But I lost track of the rules.
