Has anyone used ATT's GSM service in Norteast Florida (Jacksonville, to be precise)? How do you like it, etc?

    Thanks...

I was on hold with AT&T customer service on a GSM phone while driving around I-295 and the signal was consistent the whole time. I went from the Buckman, up I-95 to the Fuller Warren, then to the Westside on I-10 West, and the "hold" music never faded out or got weak.

I've read a lot of complaints about ATTWS GSM coverage in Central Florida. Specifically, someone had trouble with tower hand-offs while driving. What phone are you using? Is Jacksonville AT&TWS GSM coverage at 1900mhz or 850/800 mhz? I know they have a 1900mhz signal at the beach.

I was on a Nokia 8390 and driving around town at night (don't know if that matters or not). And I don't know what frequency I was on - I was on hold with AT&T to cancel my GSM account. But the whole time the reception was clear.

AT&Ts GSM coverage in North Florida is solid....I have used my Siemens to make data connections as well as voice calls all over Jacksonville with no problems....

Until Cingular launches their GSM service though, you will not be able to "roam" in Tallahassee or Gainesville with a GSM only handset...to use your phone in these areas would require the Siemens handset. Other than that, the GSM network is solid statewide.

Thanks for the info! I currently have TMobile (because I worked with them for a while) but I want the Nokia 3590, and ATT is the only company that has it for now. I've been trying to make out the coverage maps for their GSM service and they're too small to really be of much use. TM does have a little better coverage, but Cingular has both beat overall, and I have access to a Cingular phone. Most of my usage would be in Jacksonville, but I occasionally head to Tampa and Sarasota, and to Atlanta and Charlotte maybe once a year. Any more info would also be appreciated....

All those cities have GSM service....its just the "in-between" that will cause you problems...especially if you are driving to Atlanta. If you drive to Charlotte, you will actually be able to use your phone after the Spring...SunCom (Triton) is launching their GSM/GPRS service to roaming traffic as a soft launch before they begin selling it...so up I-95 and I-26/I-77 will be covered.
