Hello, I'm thinking of going with At&T and was wondering how there Signal Strength, Customer Service and anything else pertinent in making my decision in joining them. Looking for Pro's and Con's from current customers.

Currently I'm with Alltel and the signal strength and customer service is good. I had Verizon wireless before and they had no towers in my area of Crystal River Florida. Also part of the reason for my switching is that I'm considering on getting the Apple iPhone. Thanks for any help and direction that you can give to me. Thomas34461

    Good name, there Thomas . . . :D

    My 2 cent.

    I'm thinking of leaving att.

They're unfortunatly not what they were when I signed up with Cingular many years ago.

    I kind-of like the i-phone too - but not it's exclusive "att only", slow-web, apple's my way or the highway attitude (a former mac's user/ evangalist) & especially . . .
mail away your cell phone to replace the freekin' battery . . .

On second thought, maybe att & apple deserve each other . . .

    :p

    imo

You have a great name yourself there TommyB.
Thanks for the quick response. So what you are saying the iPhone is slow. And am I correct in what you were saying that from Apple (apple's my way or the highway attitude) in regards to the iphone little support?
Maybe there is something elso out there similar to the iPhone?
    Thanks, Thomas344610:D

The iPhone is on the Edge network and not a 3G phone (yet) so the data is going to be slower then a 3G phone, As for the support I couldn't say what he is talking about unless it's 3rd party applications or lack of and the whole unlocking incident where they did an upgrade to prevent it from happening.

The best suggestion is give it the 30 day test and see if it's a good phone for you, from what I have heard you may want a smart phone vs this but then everyone's tastes and experiences are different, texting has been a complaint by people due to the size of the keyboard and how hard it can be to get the correct letters, which I did experience when I test one at the store.

As for the network in FL, you should be in decent shape since they have both 850 bands in FL and have good coverage throughout the state, but like everywhere they can have holes as with any carrier.
You may want to do the whole 30 day test and use it everywhere you need the phone to see if it's a right move to go to AT&T or stay with Alltel, again everyone has a different experience with different carriers & phones. (This is from a fellow Tom to another :p)

    Hi Fire14 (Tom ;) )
Thanks for the info. I'm going to take a look at what At&T has to offer in phones as well as the iPhone that I have been thinking of getting. I'm not familiar with what you were talking about as far as "The iPhone is on the Edge network and not a 3G phone (yet) ". Thats ok because I will ask them about that. Even if I don't know now, you have helped me by stating it, so thanks!

I also plan on taking a look at these smart phones too. I think there is one that is called a Tilt Phone? Anyway I will check it out.

Also I do believe that I can keep my current phone number?? Would hate to lose it. :)

Hello Thomas, yes you will be able to keep your current number, all you would need to do is tell at&t that you want to port your number in from Alltel. Don't cancel your Alltel account though or it cannot be ported in, that account will be automatically closed after the number is ported in. Typically you will have the voice & SMS within 4 hours, the data may take up to 48-72 hours.

The Tilt is a very nice phone, do take a look at that and also from my 100% biased perspective, the Treo 750.

    Good luck to you

PS: Sorry I messed up this thread by being the only "Non-Tom" posting in it. :D

EDGE and 3G are 2 different data systems for GSM cell phones. EDGE is older and slower. Data speeds with an EDGE capable phone are going to be equivalent to a 56k dialup connection. 3G is the newer standard and is capable of DSL and faster speeds. The iPhone is an EDGE device so it will never have that fast internet experience unless you are using a wireless hotspot or your wireless network in your home. The Tilt is a very nice device, I have one myself and enjoy it a lot. if you are considering an iPhone look at the Tilt. It has a lot more features, is capable of utilizing the 3G network, and is a lot cheaper.

While the AT&T return policy without contract term fee is 30 days, the return policy on the iPhone is stricter. You have only 14 days to return it and there is a 10% restocking fee.
