AT&T Says It Needs T-Mobile to Fix Network Problems (Phone Scoop) Speaking to CNN on Tuesday, AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega said that the company's wireless network will face major problems in the short term if it can't begin to integrate T-Mobile's network into its own. He said, "With this deal, we're set. One of the key drivers (for the deal) was the need for additional spectrum. It resolves the pending spectrum challenges that we're facing in major cities." de la Vega didn't specify exactly what problems its network will face without T-Mobile, but it did say that it will make use of T-Mobile's 1700MHz AWS spectrum for LTE. Earlier this week, AT&T proposed to buy T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom for $39 billion. http://www.cnn.com/2011/TECH/mobile/03/22/verizon.att.spectrum/index.html
AT&T says it needs T-mobile to fix network problems? Didn't they say years ago that the 3G upgrade was going to allow them to gain network efficiency? What happened with that? Also, what's happening with all the AWS and 700Mhz licenses they bought? Previously they wouldn't admit to having network problems, but now all the sudden T-Mobile is the only solution to their problems? Allow me to LMAOL! :lmao::lmao:
I'm sure that 3G did give up a lot of added network efficiency, but we use it all! That, and apparently the way AT&T has 3G deployed isn't ideal.
I am scratching my head at that comment by AT&T. I don't think T-Mobile will do much of anything while the government investigates the merger. Only if the merger gets denied, will T-Mobile do anything network wise, when it get its $3 billion break up fee.
There is most likely stuff that is already in the works at this point that can't be stopped, but outside of a few months, I don't see anything happening.
My guess is AT&T doesn't need T-Mobile, they want T-Mobile. They want to be bigger, and they have the means to do it. So crossing my fingers on this thing falling apart. But in this psychotic world, it will probably go through... I don't believe their spectrum issues are what they're saying they are and that this T-Mobile acquisition is the only way to "fix" it. It's what they aren't saying that I wonder about.
What, you think there might be a problem with the swiss cheese pattern AT&T chose in many areas? :evillaugh
T-Mobile can't afford to do *nothing*, since if the merger is blocked, and they don't do anything for a year, they will end up being severely uncompetitive. However, they are probably going to slow roll some things outside of the HSPA+ upgrades, which are well underway.
