From MSN Money: (AT&T Reaches Major Michigan Investment Milestone; Announces Plan to Add More Than 40 New Cell Sites in 2009: PRNewswire Business News: T - MSN Money)

Here's just a snipet: I'm quite surprised that Mount Pleasant and Traverse City are about to get 3G this year. However, I'm disappointed that not 1 of the 40 cell sites is going to be in the Thumb (where they really need to beef up their coverage).

As part of its Michigan 2009 investment, AT&T plans to add more than 40 new cell sites throughout the state in areas including: Metro Detroit, Cheboygan, East Jordan, East Lansing, Elk Rapids, Fenton, Flint, Howell, Mount Pleasant, Muskegon, Port Huron, Rogers City and Saginaw. In addition, AT&T plans to introduce 3G service in Bay City, Holland, Midland, Mount Pleasant, Muskegon, Port Huron, Saginaw and Traverse City, which will expand its 3G footprint into Bay, Grand Traverse, Isabella, Midland, Muskegon, Saginaw and St. Clair counties.

"Over the last few years, the state legislature has worked to create an environment in Michigan which invited investment and expansion in the telecommunications market," said Gail Torreano, president, AT&T Michigan. "We continue to make significant investments to deliver dependable, high speed wireless access in more places across Michigan for consumers and business customers who need to stay connected to work, family and friends and our ongoing investments in Michigan will help us ensure that our state has access to the advanced wireless broadband services that help drive economic growth."

From 2006 to 2008, AT&T's total capital investment in Michigan was more than $2 billion. During that time, more than 60 new cell sites were activated and more than 500 sites were upgraded with technology that improves in-building coverage and enhances voice quality and data speeds. In addition, AT&T seamlessly transitioned over the former Dobson network in the Upper Peninsula and completed 3G network builds in Detroit, Flint, Grand Rapids and Lansing.

Cool. I'm really surprised that at&t added towers around my area (Rogers City/Cheboygan). I never would have thought that they would have improved the coverage over here compared to the west side of the state. Now its rock solid.

When I was in North Muskegon last summer with my family visiting my uncle, aunt, and cousin, AT&T was good for the most part. There were a couple of areas were the coverage was spotty. It is good that they are adding 3G.

Good to know. Thanks. Use to live in MI myself and visit the Sleeping Bear area all the time.

I'm not a Michigan expert, although I've been to Detroit and Kalamazoo on business. But certain town names make me think of certain songs...

"Kathy," I said as we boarded a Greyhound in Pittsburgh
"Michigan seems like a dream to me now
It took me four days to hitchhike from Saginaw
I've come to look for America."

A lot of Michigan's cities are Native American names. I think a lot of us are just so used to the names like Saginaw and such that other city names in other states almost seem so "plain jane." LOL.

Sorry for dragging the thread OT, but we have plenty of Native American place names in MA as well (of course the state names Michigan and Massachusetts, are both good examples): Nahant, Cohasset, Scituate, Mattapoisett, Sippowisset, Chicopee, Agawam, Nantucket, and my favorite, Mashpee (I'm juvenile, I know, but it just sounds funny).

Then, of course, there's the little lake with a long name near Webster, MA, said to be the longest place name in the US: Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg. Say that 5 times fast! :lmao:

Well I only meant mainly like southern cities that tend to spell names and such as they sound. Or just cities like Charlotte or Dallas or Little Rock are just kind of bland.

And I also looked up that name and I see that it's also referred to as Webster Lake nowadays.

Yes we have an odd mesh of native american, french, dutch, and a little german-esque names. It's funny. Even Hell, Eden, Paradise, Kalamazoo, Bad Axe, Climax, the list goes on......, We certainly aren't alone though. There are some pretty interesting names out west...some not even in a different language, haha...

    I'm just glad I don't live here....Funny town name
