Here a bite about the pending strike. Scary time of the year to go on strike. The article only talks about sales but its alot more. AT&T Mobility Sales Reps going on strike? : Boy Genius Report
I know exactly what you are talking about... A couple of my worst employees started pestering me for raises, right when we have had the slowest month in YEARS. I haven't paid myself in weeks. They were bugging the heck out of me, and I needed to trim payroll anyway, so I fired them. I wish them the best of luck in finding a new job that better meets their pay requirements.
Fire them. I am sure there are plenty of people who would take the job in a second... And good job, Jay. You trimmed inefficient employees and cut your payroll, too!
One really must question whether this strike is really for the workers that the union represents, or for the union itself. IMO, the way that I'm reading it, it seems to be more for the union itself (than the workers they represent)! In all the comments I've read from AT&T employees, I haven't read one that was in favor of striking at this particular moment...
They did vote to strike as of last night, and it's part of their collective bargining process, since they keep hitting dead ends on the negotiations, per the article CWA union members authorize strike against AT&T Mobility - RCR Wireless News Their contract expires tonight (2/7/09) but the process to strike will take a week or 2 if the higher up's in the Union approve it. To me this is a bad time to be using a forceful hand, since AT&T could decide to cut their workforce even more, and yes I think it's more of a Union trying to be strong for themselves, since Union's are slowly getting broken up around the country. We have been with no contract since the 1st of the year & are dealing with the town offering us "0%" raise this year, our union leaders are getting ready to go to arbitrattion (again). To me lets see what happens with the economy for 1 year & take the 0% raise, the town is not hiring people to replace retired members, because they are not sure if they will loose the case. We suffer with less people to do our job & the safety of all of us and the people we protect comes into a major concern. It can be the same for tower workers and others in the fields, besides sales reps or CSR's, which have to deal with more work & higher angry customers. We will see what happens soon I guess.
Fire14, well said, it is tough times and all need to be grateful that they have a job. I think in this case the Union is thinking that the new administration will back them up. Yes they will but if hey win, then we will see more out of jobs so the company could save. To fight for more now, it will be bad for business, bad for the consumer (as the cost is some how needs to be recovered) and with increased costs and a bad economy, consumers are not going to part with their money it would mean cutting costs would be required and the first to go is Jobs.
