hey, i'm going to college in hanover, nh (03755). i'm currently living in new jersey and am using a motorola v600 on at&t. i need to know if hanover falls within at&t's network coverage area.... apparently, you need to use at least 50% of your phone time in any 3 consecutive months within at&t's coverage area in order to keep your number.. or else at&t has the right to cancel your number.. is this true? what should i do about this? i'm not concerned about roaming charges b/c i'm on the gsm plan
AT&T and Cingular, through a joint venture called RoadRunner, are building out a PCS GSM network in Northern New England mostly along the freeways. Since Hanover is sandwiched between I-91 and I-89 (and Dartmouth is only, at most, a mile away from I-91), I'd imagine that you'd be covered by RoadRunner. Since it's a joint venture it should count as native usage. Just a warning: as soon as you get off the freeways, you're going to be off the AT&T/Cingular network and roaming on Unicel. Edit: That section of the RoadRunner project has been up and running for about a year.
hey! thanks a bunch!.. so i should be ok right? the thing is.. i called at+t customer service and they don't even know what might happen... i just need to make sure that i stay within at+t's network area for half the time i use my phone.. so hanover and dartmouth is in an area that has been operating under that system for a year right? hehe. just need to make sure... or else i need to refund my phone before i go up to school
I just left the area after four years. I had a Cingular TDMA plan for about a year and a half, and since August, 2003, had a GAIT plan. GSM coverage has been improving, but coverage ther eis still spotty. I lived about a mile from the undergraduate campus and in my apartment, the coverage was hit or miss. My neighbor had ATT GSM and it was OK. When I was in West Lebanon, I got great GSM signal and my phone read Cingular. All in all, not very good cellular coverage in the area, but it is getting a little better. Try it out and see how it goes. I do not think it will be roaming. And congratulations on Dartmouth.
Are you saying that you're within the trial period and can get out of your contract without penalty? I'd be very apprehensive about being locked into a contract without knowing how/if it will work at school. The two cellular operators in Hanover are RCC/Unicel (running TDMA @ 800 and building out a GSM network at 800 & 1900) and US Cellular (running CDMA and TDMA @ 800, although they are only maintaining their older TDMA network and not building it out any further). Until Unicel gets their act together, I'd either get an AT&T TDMA contract (which will roam on RCC and USCC or a Verizon contract (whcih will roam on USCC and analog on RCC).
I would have thought that Cingular GSM and AT&T GSM would have identical performance in Hanover since you'd either be on their JV (RoadRunner, which as you mention in West Leb is excellent since there's a tower right there) or on Unicel. So maybe AT&T GSM will be an adequate choice for the original poster? I guess as long as someone spends all their time in Hanover/West Leb, it isn't a bad choice. Travel in any direction, and you're out of luck.
hmm.. i dunno. i'm thinking about changing over to cingular just to be safe.. i heard at&t roams on cingular in the area.. i called at&t again and they said my phone has to say at&t for at least 50% of the time i use my phone in order to keep my number... it seems like cingular has that too and cingular has better coverage over the area... what do u think? thanks again for all your help!!
hehe thanks! so u used cingular? do you think i should use at&t or cingular? i'll be in hanover for most of the time... i need some feedback from people who have been/are in the area ... i think that would be the best help i can get.. cuz i need to know if i can get at&t at least 50% of the time to show on my phone.... if i change to cingular, would i be in cingular's coverage for most of the time? thanks again!
The <50% rule is now moot between Cingular and ATT. The network is being reconfigured to select the strongest signal of the two, as opposed to only jumping to Cingular when the ATT signal disappears. With the pending closing of the acquisition, there is no way ATT is going to penalize anyone for spending too much time on Cingular! That would be like biting off their nose to spite their face! The reps are giving you the canned response as they've been trained to. Now if you were roaming to TMO, there may be cause to worry. I'd suggest you simply sign up with whichever company gives you the best plan/phone comination for your needs and take advantage of the initial trial period to prove the service out.
