According to many sources (in forums, AT&T store managers, and news sites), AT&T plans to finish their expansion of 3G coverage all over Texas.

In South Texas, AT&T has already brought coverage to the Corpus Christi and Rio Grande Valley markets, and will finish by upgrading the Laredo market to 3G. The city of Laredo will receive 3G coverage throughout its city and its surrounding towns. AT&T may also bring coverage along Interstate 35 north towards San Antonio and south to Zapata, but that is still under speculation.

In North Texas, AT&T will expand coverage to the cities of Lubbock and Abilene.

Add to this if you know anything else about AT&T expanding to other markets. :)

Are you sure about Laredo getting 3G. I called, emailed, and talked to the sales here in Laredo and they either told me it was last month, this month, end of the year, or were not getting it at all. They should expand along I-35 because some parts outside of San Antonio and along most of 1-35 have it and it would just make sense to expand it to the rest.

re: AT&T finishing 3G expansion in Texas in September

I have personally made several calls to local AT&T stores in Laredo, TX and calls to AT&T's Coverage Support Line, and according to AT&T, they are required to say "soon" to the customer asking when 3G coverage will be available. I have asked several AT&T representatives at both local Laredo stores (on San Bernando Ave. and Zapata Hwy.) and they all confirm that service will be available in September.. they can't state whether its early, mid, or late September, though.

As for AT&T Coverage Support Line, many customer support reps declined to tell me when exactly will AT&T make 3G coverage available, but a few managed to also tell me "September".

AT&T does plan to have 3G network-wide by the end of this year, including its top 300 markets. The Laredo market is within those top 300 markets (in terms of population, # of AT&T customers in Laredo, and market revenue), and has been confirmed by AT&T Store reps and AT&T Coverage Support reps.

So do plan on getting 3G in Laredo really soon  But be advised, though, that 3G will be spotty and would probably not work in the neighborhood you live in and would probably only get maximum signal strength and downloads along I-35... I personally went to test AT&T's 3G network in Corpus Christi, TX earlier today and found many spotty 3G areas, mostly in the southern parts of Corpus Christi (mainly areas not linked to downtown, I-37, or Crosstown Pkwy.)

Oh okay, thanks. I thought it was too good to be true when I read this. I kinda of figured it would be like that at first because Laredo doesn't have any servers for AT&T's DSL here. I wouldn't doubt many people here even know about 3G, but thanks for the confirmation. :)

But if we really wanted to know for sure, we can contact the AT&T President directly. Click here for the numbers to the President if you want to ask him if 100% we are getting it.. I mean he is the President of at&t

I believe Texas belongs to the AT&T Southwest division, so try calling the West hotline lol

I thought I'd give an update. I saw some guys at one of the cell sites yesterday. It looked like they were on break, but I saw one of their trucks had a trailer with what looked like a coax spool. They better have at least some 3G in by September or I will call in and complain, lol.

I'd thought Id give an update as well. I called AT&T a few days ago and the wonderful rep there gave me the exact information I wanted. Apparently, there are 16 towers in the Laredo area that will be upgraded to the 3G network in September. All towers show the "ready for construction" status for either 9/1 or 9/14 and show the implemetation of 3G as a reason for construction.

It's getting good that they are starting construction early, cuz I want that 3G on my phone already! LOL.

Another update today: AT&T is rumored to announce 3G wireless broadband service for several areas (including Laredo, aka Southwest Texas) early next month. On July 7, AT&T flipped the 3G switch for the rest of the Rio Grande Valley, days before the anticipated iPhone 3G launch.

Also, the cell tower near my home (3019 Cortez St.) got a new tower enhancement the last couple of days. I drive through there on my way to school and have seen AT&T cell site workers upgrading the tower. A call to AT&T Customer Care a couple of hours confirmed that the towers were finalizing installation of 3G (in fact I think I saw a 3G symbol somewhere, or did my eyes deceive me?) and that the "switch" will be flipped in early September, along with a press release from AT&T here. I also saw workers at the United South High School water & AT&T cell tower.

If you have any more information from other towers (especially towers in North and Central Laredo), don't hesitate to give an update as we near the launch of 3G here .

No way you live there, I live on the same street, lol. I seen a lot of towers get what looked like either a new T1 line or geting fiber put in. Also, the sites getting what may have been new pannels. I know the tower by Sams had some upgrades on it. Not sure if it had 3G because I had my Blackberry with me. They better hurry up with the launch though, if I see any towers when I go out, I'll post them up.

Yeah I live on Toledo Dr, though (3019 Cortez St. is the location of the AT&T and American Towers, Inc. cell towers) lol and I believe the tower behind Sam's is Time Warner's, and the cell tower next to the small fire station belongs to Verizon (but there are multiple cells meaning other providers (maybe Sprint and AT&T) are also utilizing it, according to HowStuffWorks.com

Yeah, that's the tower I was reffering to, the one next to the fire station. I know Verizon's on it, but AT&T and others could co-locate on it. lol, oh okay, nice. I haven't lived here in laredo to long, so I don't know the streets that good. I know there's another tower by the flea market on gadalupe or however you spell it. But I don't know who's on that one though. Just hope AT&T does turn on 3G by the beginning of September.

An update for North Texas: Lubbock now has 3G coverage. Although not viewable on AT&Ts national coverage map, a PDF is provided here: Lubbock, TX 3G Coverage Map

No update for Abilene as of today.

And for Laredo, no new updates today. Although AT&T states that the coverage map was last updated on July 31, 2008, the updates were not available until earlier today for some reason.

So within the next few days (or weeks), this link will take you to Laredo's coverage map in PDF when it becomes available: Laredo, TX 3G Coverage Map

    Alnandr -

New to Laredo here, and I'll be looking for your future updates on AT&T 3G coverage.

I'm verizon right now, but I want to switch to AT&T and get the Iphone 3G or even better, the HTC Touch Pro, which was just announced for AT&T yesterday as the "Fuze."

    Thanks!

re: AT&T finishing 3G expansion in Texas in September

    Hey guys,

First of all, hey Kenny! Welcome to Laredo :)

Now on the updates on AT&T 3G coverage, there have been no updates to the coverage map. It is bearly the beginning of the month so give it 1-2 weeks till we see some 3G.

However, yesterday around 6:37 PM my iPhone 3G shortly switched to 3G!! I was just browsing at home when suddenly my phone loses all of it's bars, then switches back on, this time showing the 3G symbol. I got 4 bars. I was immediately shocked and went straight to the Safari web browser. i was successfully able to load a few pages (Google, and NYTimes.com) and they seemed to download very well, at around 500-600 kbps. but while the NYTimes site loaded, the phone automatically switched back to EDGE. I have not seen any 3G as of yet.

The AT&T tower engineers were probably testing the 3G to make sure voice and data worked, then turned it off. I believe AT&T isn't going to flip on 3G permanently until all towers have been upgraded.

By the way, one of the AT&T tower engineers' father goes to my local church, and told me that he had come all the way from Lubbock to work on implementing new things to the towers (3G, i assumed), and another one lives in my neighborhood, which is the son of my mother's friend. I haven't speaked to them of what they are working on, but we think we know what the answer is :D

I'll keep you posted if I see that 3G icon again :D :D This is exciting!

Well, I certainly didn't expect an update within the hour!

Good to hear though... glad things are moving.

The HTC Touch Diamond will be released from Sprint within a week or two, and the Touch Pro a month to follow... but I just talked to them in the Sprint store on Springfield today, and they said that the 3G Sprint rollout wouldn't be for around a year! That's re-DONK-ulous... so I will definitely wait for AT&T's HTC offering now.

re: AT&T finishing 3G expansion in Texas in September

    Another update for Laredo guys...

Unfortunately, due to the damages of Hurricane Gustav and the expected damages of Hurricane Ike forecasting South Texas in the next few days, AT&T has delayed 3G for Laredo until the first week of October. AT&T is reportedly deploying tower engineers across the states of Texas, Louisiana and other affected areas that don't have service.

Apparently, the "flip-on" 3G date, according to a rep I spoke to earlier, was on September 22. He said that all towers had the equipment installed and just needed final guideline preparations before being switched on, but most engineers (including the ones installing 3G in Laredo (they were in Lubbock before) were called to the affected areas of Hurricane Gustav, and are expected to be called again once Hurricane Ike makes landfall, and are on-location ready to work.

Reps at the AT&T store and at the Customer Service hotline indicated 3G to be on around the "first week of October" BEFORE Ike was predicted to make landfall in Texas,so there might be another delay.

Keep your hopes and your patience up guys, and we'll have 3G here really really soon. And for iPhone 3G users like me, at least be thankful for this Friday's 2.1 update that fixes 3G reception issues, among other things, so that we don't get affected ;)

    Cheers,
    Alan G.

Thanks for the update... I guess it makes sense.

Again, I'm in no hurry, as AT&T does not yet carry the phone I want.

In regards to your Iphone 3G... are you ready to have worse battery life, once you are permanently on a 3G connection? And doesn't it bother you that you cannot just drop in a new battery? Cut & Paste? Take video? Get SMS the normal way? And the list goes on...

As you can see, I'm not an Apple Fanboy like there seems to be plenty of out there. :)

The iPhone allows for you to turn off the 3G function, and you can in a way get around the MMS function by sending the photo as an email. Not taking video does suck, and cutting and pasting shouldn't be a problem. I usually don't until i get home. That sucks we won't get 3G till next month. I can wait a month while others get their service back up. I'm surprised there are tower engineers that live here because the servers for DSL for AT&T is in San Antonio. I just hope they do turn on the 3G when they say. Not to go off topic, how do you like Sprint? I have some friends where I can be standing next to them and they have no service and I have full bars.

re: AT&T finishing 3G expansion in Texas in September

As much as I use data services on my phone... I would never turn off 3G for the Iphone if I had one. And with every phone I've ever had, I've enjoyed having an extra battery charged up and ready to go if I my useage is more than normal.

Yes, I know about the email workaround... lame.

As for how I like sprint - I'd say that as of now, I don't, just because of the same experiences you describe.

See, I'm actually VERIZON, which is the only cell game in town with 3G already operational. That's why it's basically impossible for me to jump ship to Sprint just for a phone, and then hate the service... but it's so tempting...

But, that's why I think I'll wait for the Fuze, which is AT&T's version of the HTC Touch Pro.

You know, 640x480 VGA touch screen, full 5-row keyboard slider, 3.2 MP camera with flash, a powerful browser that with a newly released plugin DOES FLASH in webpages, etc etc etc... I'm sold...even with the drawback of the thickness of the thing.

Lol, sorry, I think i read your post wrong. That's one reason I stayed away from Sprint like the plauge. Same with Verizon and there enemic UI. Yeah, I don't like the iPhone myself either, that's why I'm waiting for the Blackberry Bold :D But is VZW coverage EV-DO Rev A? I heard it wasn't. Whatever, but I'm willing to guess that we will see fast 3G speeds here in town because not to many people know about 3G. Can't wait till October.

Ahh, a Crackberry fan! I totally understand why you like the Bold... but it's not for me. Good choice, though.

I'm 99% sure VZW is just Rev. 0. But, it's still the best in town, at the moment.

I can stream Youtube flawlessly, and even download videos straight to the SD card in a jiffy. But, my Motorola Q is OLD, and I hate WM5. I especially hate that it's lacking a touchscreen.

Lol, yeah, I'm a crackberry users. I nearly killed my last blackberry from all the typing. But I personally don't like Verizon because of their UI and hearing that they lack some simple features on some phones like OBEX. Can't wait till they turn 3G on, becuase with it raining on sunday, the power in my block went out, but I still had signal. I think they're still doing some testing because one night I saw my phone lose signal and regain it. I couldn't confirm if they were testing 3G since I only have EDGE on my Pearl :(

re: AT&T finishing 3G expansion in Texas in September

    Abilene now has 3G.

I guess Laredo is last... again. It's stupid that we always have to be one of the last ones to get anything new. I think it's time for our city council to starting acting and negotiating with technology companies like AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile Google, Microsoft, and Apple that Laredo is a fairly large city with needed technologies, and that they need to implement their latest services a lot sooner.

I'll be calling up "311" tomorrow and see if my suggestion gets anywhere. At least thats something in Laredo other cities in Texas don't have

P.S: Verizon already has EV-DO Rev A coverage. Ever since last summer (2007).

AT&T is bringing 3G.. GREAT! Check that off the list:

    *AT&T 3G -check for October
*Google Traffic Updates installed on I-35, Loop 20, and US-83
*T-Mobile EDGE (currently has GPRS.. WTFF?!?!) or 3G
*Sprint Mobile Broadband "EV-DO" (expected in 2009.. thats why i recommend Laredoans to get rid of Sprint already.. and no you're not getting any f**king Sprint Speed!)
*Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint Mobile TV
    *AT&T U-verse
    *Verizon FiOS
*Apple Stores at future Piazza del Sol and/or Laredo Town Center malls
*Update satellite maps (last map dated 2005 :-/)
*Update streets, address numbers (especially from new neighborhoods)

I dont even know if there is any more to list.. but its a good list alright. I personally believe our local government is still in the early-2000's and needs to wake up to the latest.

And surely it's going to take more than a few people to convince them to do so, so spread the word and tell others to bring this issue to their local government.

Your right alnandr, our city just plain sucks. There's not that many people here who know anything about technology. I went to best buy the other day to get somethings to build my server, big mistake on my part, yet the people had no clue what I was talking about. Yeah, I talked to a AT&T tech and he told me that we are getting 3G next month and hopefully by early next year we'll get Uverse. I highly doubt we will get Fios here. I don't know anyone who has DSL from them. With Sprint, they just plain suck, along with Nextel. I tried Verizon's EV-DO but they're latency is still outrageous. Even with AT&T's Edge I get lower latency. There's somethings to add to your list, even though they don't pertain to tech and not trying to go off topic. There's virtually no good doctors here, the roads are so bad its like you need an off road truck just to drive here, the infrastructure is so old, it breaking down constantly, and everyone seems to only know spanish. That last one might seem mean, but its true. You go to other border towns, like El Paso, I been there a few times, they don't speak spanish in 99% of the city, only if you don't speak english, not just start speaking it. I don't know spanish. I tried to getting summer jobs yet most require spanish. I know a few words of spanish, but I can't speak it to save my life. Also, there's not high end or that many car dealerships period and not that many stores there at the mall. In reality, there's not much to do here in Laredo, execpt go to the mall, which half of laredo will be there, there's no good sporting places, the LEC sucks, no good things come here, there's like one club, not that many good restaurants, the list can go on and on. Sorry for the ranting, but you know its true. Your suggestion is good, but I'm sure half of laredo wouldn't care because either they can't afford it, don't know how how to use it or what it is, or don't care for it. I really do hope that the current mayor cleans up his act or quits. He's not doing anything to help improve our city. I'm sure there's more for us to go on about, but I'll leave it there as to not go too much off topic. I just really do hope we get 3G here in laredo.

re: AT&T finishing 3G expansion in Texas in September

I hear ya, I've never been to Laredo, but have been stuck in some other places I didn't fit in or like.

There's at least a hockey team there in Laredo: Laredo Bucks

The season starts soon. Why not go check out some games. Nothing makes me feel more connected to civilization than watching grown men with no teeth skate around and bash each other with sticks :browani: ....maybe there's some local rec leage you can join? I also saw on the map there's a golf course accross the street, but golf sucks  ...well, except for that scene in Happy Gilmore with Bob Barker :p

Geez guys, your complaints about Laredo are SPOT-ON.

I couldn't think of anything to add. Scary, really.

    So... I won't add anything. :)

Lol, yeah we have the Bucks here, but its not as good or fun as watching a Red Wings game or any NHL game. The golf course here suck, one is at the country club and the membership cost a lot, I think around 3k. As to the golf course your refering to, I played on it, and its bad. Lol, yeah, every time I watch that movie, I want to go try and play like he does. As to joining a local team, as far as I know there's none. Yeah kenny, I only lived here 5 years and its been the worst. Just hope AT&T does live up to what they're saying. If not, I'll be dumping their stock and jumping ship to another provider. Haha, jk, I'll stick with AT&T.
