I was exploring the AT&T website today and found a map showing existing 3G coverage and future 3G coverage that is expected to be live by March 31st, 2011. Pretty significant increase in coverage (overall). See attached photo. Enjoy!
I noticed the same thing... especially in the markets where AT&T acquired certain Unicel and Alltel properties from Verizon. I also noticed more 3G near my backyard as well 3G doesn't look like blue isles in a sea of orange. Just wish they get Albany, GA lit up...only city in the state that doesn't have it (all remaining carriers have it).
att seems to really be stepping thing up which is good. a friend of mine in michigan says he has heard about more expansion later this year so shouldnt be too far off there.
I really hope so. VZW is finally building a 200 foot monopole tower in Rogers City (which has been a dead spot forever) and it will have EVDO Rev. A, which is much faster than at&t's slow EDGE network. So If at&t doesn't announce or start tuning it up in northern MI, I'm movin' on to big red.
Yeah, I heard that it was live in Benzie. I travelled up to the Mackinaw and St. Ignace areas last weekend. The 3G speeds were awful, 0.43 Mbps download and about the same upload. Throughout my random speed tests throughout the weekend, they stayed constantly around that speed.
I just happened to notice that the main AT&T cell site in Caro, MI just had new panels put up. I can only assume that they are preparing to launch 3G here in Tuscola County, and maybe even the whole Thumb. We'll see.....
Excellent! I'm glad to hear they are doing work to expand down in the thumb! Now if they would do some more work north...
Take it for what it's worth...but I was told by both a phone tech support rep AND an in-store AT&T employee here in Asheville, NC (not an authorized retailer, actual AT&T store) who said they just had a meeting on it that AT&T plans to have 3G NATIONWIDE on all current Edge towers by the end of 2011. Both said that AT&T is in the process of running fiber out to all towers (not required for 3G but required for HSPA+ and LTE) so if they light up 3G in an area via fiber, it will not be long before that area gets HSPA+. I have tried to corner other reps via Twitter and Facebook into confirming this to me but they seem less willing to divulge info in a written format. On the record. Understandable.
Oh, as further possible evidence, I have also seen a lot of fiber laying and digging going on out here in the last two months. When they are done, they put up marker poles with AT&T on them. Now, granted, AT&T also serves us with local phone service, but I think this may be related to 3G. Why would they be expanded land line services...a dying business. DSL has been in the area for a few years now so I doubt it is related to that. We will see, I suppose. Asheville already have 3G but it is not west of the city. Verizon has had Rev-A 3G around here for about 3 years now.
I hope for the sake of all the people stuck on AT&T's EDGE network that they do roll out 3G the rest of the nation. Haven't seen any digging up or modifications to any of the towers in my area. Might soon though if what the rep said is true Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
It actually seems like they have rolled out more 3G then they intended to: Cell Phones and Cell Phone Plans - Wireless from AT&T
Well more good news for AT&T subs in the Thumb of Michigan to further prove cellular_freak's earlier posts about the area getting 3G/4G. In my small town of Cass City there are 3 or 4 huge spools of what appears to be fiber and other new equipment in boxes inside the fence beside the tower. Looks like 3G, more likely '4G' HSPA+ is coming hopefully very soon. The spools looked like this, I don't know how many feet are on a spool but I can only assume that's what it is.
A little birdie told me 3G by July 11, 2011 in Caro. We were talking 3G and he did not correct me and say 4G. Just confirmed 3G by July 11th is the plan. Not sure of how many towers around the Caro area.
Hmm, I don't know about the Watrousville tower. I know there is a Thumb Cell tower there somewhere and I know that area needs a tower pretty bad... Where is it going up at? I have not been out that way for a while...
You can see it right from 81 on the north side just west of watrousville, there were guys working on it today. Where did you hear about 3G going live next week?
I heard from one of the local store managers a couple weeks ago when the data service was out after a storm. He said it is supposed to be 3G by July 11th. He said the outage was coincidental with the storm (not sure I believed that part) but was believing the done-by-date part. He also said that it will just pop up as 3G one day, might flicker back and forth a bit and then it will just stay. I spend most of my time with it on wifi so I have not noticed if they are testing or anything yet.
I live a mile or two outside of Caro, and my buddy just texted me saying he has 3G service in Caro. I turned my phone off and back on, and I still don't show that I have 3G service. We both have Iphone 4's so I am contacting customer support. I just finished chatting with a support person for At&t and she informs me that recieving 3G service depends on what tower you are recieving off of. So as of right now, only parts of the Caro area have 3G service.
Sounds like 3G is in cass city too my friend just let me know. I bet all the people with thumb cellular and Verizon are bumming now lol.
I doubt they are bumming, they have had 3G here for quite a while, I just hope AT&T is faster than theirs.
Just did a speed test, and got 2.28 down and 1.63 up! But, it is 5:12AM. Also, long ping time, 310ms.
It definitely is. Thumb cell/Verizon get around 512Kbps and I had 2 bars of 3G in Cass City and I got around 2 Mbps. They must not have turned 3G on in Cass City because I'm only getting 2 bars of 3G even though the tower is less than a quarter mile away from me. I must be getting 3G service from another tower. I'm sure the Cass City tower will be getting it though since the 3G is trumping the edge tower and making it useless. Hopefully the speeds are faster than 2Mbps. I was down by Imlay City last week and I was getting close to 6 Mbps down 1.5 Mbps up. But still AT&T getting 3G in the area will make a lot of people switch from Thumb Cellular and Verizon I think.
I suspect thumb cell will be 4G real soon, with Verizon relationship enhancements this year. Don't know what their speeds will be though. Kind of surprised that AT&T didn't go straight to 4G though... I don't know the technology behind the different Gs but maybe it is relatively inexpensive to upgrade to 4G...
