Does anyone know the current price AT&T charges per MB (or KB) for web-browsing and downloading? Is it available without a data plan? And what about pre-paid? I searched their (sometimes cryptic) web-site, and only came up with data plan prices: Available Data Rate Plans | AT&T wireless services (The 14 notations at the bottom are almost as long as the actual description, hilarious )
My mom occasionally hits the internet button on her phone on accident... I just checked my bill. Its $0.01/Kb. -Jay
RR, just a note on the PAYG prepaid you can buy "data plan" on it as well, but unlike postpaid or PYP prepaid it's not a recurring charge, rather a one-time thing. It takes out of your balance and is good for 30 days. If you're thinking of testing your program, figuring about 1K per submission (because of the size of the radio data) and the number of samples you'd want to take can add up quicker than you'd like.
...program? What program? Yea, I was just curious. I won't use an ATT SIM, I just wanted to get a feel for the data pricing. Yea, my program sends about 1KB, it's just a few text strings. But it's weird, sometimes the log on my N95 says 0KB, sometimes 1KB, sometimes 3KB. I guess it should be about 1KB. If retransmissions are needed, I shouldn't be charged for that. And I'm still scratching my head why the log sometimes shows 0KB after I send :headscrat
I'll be absolutely shocked if AT&T does not bill for retransmissions it is so unlike them to not bill for something they can. Is there a way for you to see the size in bytes? Maybe if it sent less than 512 bytes the N95 says 0KB? Or maybe even for anything less than 1024 bytes?
The phone may be rounding down for small data packets, but I'm sure that AT&T bills for a full KB, even if only a partial KB was used...
. . Jay, dmapr: Oh, right, since my data transfer is very small, the phone must be rounding down to zero. Pretty obvious, don't know how I missed that one :O I don't know what mediation system AT&T uses, or how they perform their rating, but normally the size of the data transfer is taken from the switch, not the radio, so if there are re-transmissions needed on the radio, you won't be billed extra for that
I didn't realize you were talking about radio retransmissions, I thought you were talking about HTTP retransmissions you may've built into your program sorry about the confusion.
Oh, I didn't think about HTTP retransmissions. :headscrat ...now I'm confused ...but no, I don't think they bill you for that either. I have some friends working at the rating department of an operator (not AT&T tho), I'll ask them and find out...
Hmm, it's weird. The program I'm building/testing only sends a few text strings, which I figure to be about 1KB. My phones data transfer log shows between 0-3KB each time, and I just checked my OLAM account, and each transfer is showed as 20KB ...maybe my operator (not AT&T) has a minimum billing amout per data transfer? Has anyone else had experience like that? ...I have a 200MB/month data plan, and never get close to using it all, but still...
For future reference, here are the pay per use charges for AT&T Mobility: By the way, data charges are rounded up to the nearest kilobyte. One is charged for retransmissions. For calculation purposes, all data in both directions are counted in the totals. Data are measured and not inspected for content.
Hi, thanks. Where is the data measured? ie: at the SGSN/GGSN? And what re-transmissions are billed for? HTTP I guess? I don't think radio re-transmission can be billed for...
Jay, why don't you password protect the internet button on your mom's phone? I did that on my RAZR and my wife's V557 because in the old days when I had only voice, I used to occasionally get billed for a second or two of internet time because of accidentally hitting the wrong button.
You would also have to lock any application which might access the internet, for example, email, cellular video, MEdia Mall or video sharing.
You don't necessarily have to lock all the applications which could use data if the real culprit is just at&t's placement of the non-mappable "MediaNet button" on their phones - where it is prone to accidental "bumping", etc.
On mom's new phone I created a new internet profile that has blank info. I did leave enough so that text messages still work though. Not that she has texting, or that she ever uses it but in case we ever have a sept 11 type of event we have a means of communication. That's the only reason I haven't removed text messaging from my phones completely. Being in the DC area all landlines were overloaded.
