Press Release Source: AT&T Inc. AT&T Answers the Need for Speed in Philadelphia, New Jersey and Delaware Tuesday November 27, 12:01 am ET Company Expands Wireless Broadband Network to Deliver Supercharged Access to Mobile Applications and Interactive Content KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa., Nov. 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T - News) has announced that customers who live and travel through eastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware now have more options in how, when and where they can access the Internet, use e-mail or view a variety of entertainment services. With the addition of 300 third-generation (3G) cell sites, AT&T has further expanded its broadband mobile network in Philadelphia -- and other parts of eastern Pennsylvania -- Wilmington, Del., and Trenton, N.J. AT&T's 3G network in Philadelphia now includes Kennett Square, Concordville, West Chester, Exton, Downington, Phoenixville, Collegeville, Montgomeryville, Warmister, Newtown, Chalfont and Doyleston. In eastern Pennsylvania, AT&T customers can enjoy mobile broadband services in Harrisburg, Hershey, Carlisle, Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton. In southern New Jersey, the 3G network now reaches Paulsboro, Blackwood, Willingboro, Hamilton and Lawrenceville. In Delaware, AT&T's 3G network has been turned on in New Castle, Middletown, Talleyvile, Claymont and Elsmere. Locally, the company has invested nearly $500 million on wireless network enhancements to expand coverage, add capacity and expand its 3G network in eastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware over the past three years. Nationally, AT&T has spent $18 billion on wireless network upgrades during that same time period. "We are staying ahead of the growing demand for fast, dependable wireless broadband access to feature-rich Internet content, such as streaming video," said Dan Lafond, vice president and general manager for AT&T's wireless unit in Pennsylvania. "Our goal is to ensure that AT&T customers have the very best wireless experience possible -- which means unmatched coverage and quality of service." "Having access to high speed services like AT&T's 3G service is important to businesses and residents throughout southern New Jersey," said Maxine Ballen, president and CEO, New Jersey Technology Council. "In our increasingly mobile society, mobile broadband services will make New Jersey an even more attractive place to live, work and do business. I'm pleased AT&T has made this commitment." The New Jersey Technology Council provides business support and advocacy to its member technology companies. The 3G network also provides the simultaneous delivery of voice and data -- a capability not offered by all wireless providers. An example of a unique 3G service is AT&T's Video Share, which enables users to share live video over wireless phones while carrying on a voice call. For example, Video Share customers are able to participate on a conference call from their 3G device while they download a presentation or access the Internet. "Imagine the thrill of using your wireless phone to show grandparents in Arizona their grandson's winning touchdown in Allentown," said Lafond. "Being able to share 'what I see, when I see it' is a benefit of Video Share and the 3G network. It's another example of how advanced wireless services are enhancing our everyday lives." Benefits of the AT&T 3G Network AT&T's 3G network uses HSDPA/UMTS (High Speed Downlink Packet Access/Universal Mobile Telephone System) technology. The company's 3G network is also based on the GSM (Global Systems for Mobile Communications) standard, the most widely used technology in the world. More than 2.6 billion people use wireless devices powered by GSM -- representing more than 85 percent of the world's wireless users. The company's wireless broadband network is available in more than 220 U.S. major metropolitan areas and is continuing to expand to additional markets. The 3G network is also available in almost every major country, so customers can use their handsets almost anywhere they go. When customers leave AT&T's growing 3G service footprint, they automatically convert to AT&T's EDGE (Enhanced Data Rate for GSM Evolution) network without dropping the call or data connection. The company's EDGE network is the largest high speed wireless data network in the country and is available in more than 13,000 cities and towns and along 40,000 miles of highways and secondary roads. Customers who use a GSM phone, such as those offered by AT&T, can take their device with them when they travel abroad and benefit from worldwide access enabled by the GSM standard. AT&T subscribers have the ability to browse the Web and perform other data functions in more than 135 countries, and they can make a phone call in more than 190 countries and territories.
