Can anyone explain to me why my LG CU400 and the MOTO V3xx that I tried first, keeps fluctuating between 3G and EDGE, when at&t's 3G coverage map has me marked in a solid area of 3G coverage? I purchased a MOTO V3xx first and returned it due to dropped calls and problems with maintaining a Web connection after it continually switched between a 3G to an E signal. I exchanged it for the LG CU400 and although this handset is able to keep the 3G signal better than the V3xx was able to, I am still finding this to be a problem........ I resolved the issue on the LG handset by going into the phones program menu and switching the signal to 2G only. With the LG set to 2G, there is no reception issues at all. There isn't one place I have been to that I haven't had reception in. I know that the Maps can't accurately reflect all areas, but I covered at least a 300 mile area in my testing of at&t's 3G coverage that the maps listed as sold coverage but yet there there was almost no 3G signal at all. I have spoke to many Reps. over the past few days, and they haven't been able to answer this question for me.......... I do want to put in a good word for their customer service dept. though. I've read many complaints on several of these boards about at&t's poor customer service, when I have had just the opposite experience. Every time I called in, I never waited more than 2 minutes to speak to a Rep., and they were all very pleasant to talk to. The next time I get one of my consumer reports surveys, I'm giving their CS Dept. an A+ . TIA for your replies.
Ellen, Like all CDMA based systems (UMTS is WCDMA) you have an effect called cell breathing. If you're in an area that has alot of traffic (phone calls) then you could be seeing this effect. Unless you're downloading data though it shouldn't matter because 3G does a handoff to 2G (EDGE). Hope this helps.:browani:
I'd start out by saing that the coverage maps on the website an utter load of B.S...the coverage app that Cs has is alot better but still not entirely accurate. like ^^ said it could just be an issue of traffic in the area. what SIM do you have? is it cingular 3g or att 3g? i'd suggest whatever the large city it is you live in to travel close to the center of the city and have 3g on and see if it keeps fluxing, if so may be a SIM issue or may be a phone issue....hope that helps
AT&T's Coverage Map shows that I have 3G coverage in my house. I can only get 3G in some parts of my house. The rest is EDGE. Also most of my area is only EDGE, 3G is spotty.
I was given one of at&t's brand new 3G SIM cards that just came out, so I'm crossing that off my list as the problem. I changed my LG CU400 back to 3G yesterday, to see what would happen, and in my house and a few miles outside of it was able to keep a strong 3G signal. However when leaving the area, the signal fluctuation started all over again, which could either indicate traffic in that area as you said, or that at&t's maps don't accurately reflect 3G coverage in those areas. Since I don't really need to have a 3G signal all the time, I'm going to leave the CU400 set to 2G, and keep the better signal. Thanks for the information.
Drf sounds like the coverage maps are a little off, I think your idea of locking it to 2g for the time being is best. those handoffs can be frustrating. I'm so eager to have 3g here, I heard I wont be getting till mid to late next year..just have to deal with EDGE till then
I know when I am in a fringe area, I have the same problem with the phone switching back & forth, I haven't had any dropped calls from it so far guess I have been lucky. I guess once they do more towers by me to make them 3G I can see if I will have more issues, for me it's less then a mile away for 3G service. Not that it matters for me on data since I had to drop that due to the cost.
You have a point there, I am so close to it I can almost taste it. I am suprised how it seems to have stopped all of the sudden & don't know what's going on with them on this & new towers.
Prior to me quitting there I was recieving alot of customer complaints about loss of service in areas where they use to have service. after filing trouble tickets about it, alot of the time it was due to RF antennas being re-directed for whatever reason for network maintence due to 3g deployment. Might see more of it in the future since they're rolling out 3g service in more areas.
Hopefully it will arrive in your area soon. I just tested my LG CU400's 3G coverage at work today, and it did a great job of keeping the signal........AT&T's new LG handsets get great reception as compared to some of the LG's that I've had with them in the past. And I like how easy it is to go into the menu and change the network setting to a signal that will provide me with the best coverage in the areas that I need it to.
Manual network selection is great, I leave mine on auto since I dont have to worry about the handoff. But its nice to know its there
Does your Samsung have a menu that you can go into like the LG's? The main reason why I returned the V3xx was because it wasn't as easy as just going into the phones menu to change the network settings. It seemed like it was more complicated on the Motorola's from what I could tell by reading some of the posts over at the at&t help forums.
Yes, on the blackjack theirs a shortcode you can enter in and brings up a menu then you chooe the band. Or of course you can go into the menu / settings / phone and disable it too.
see now this is the beauty of CDMA and its maturity.........i have EV-DO Rev A for miles around my area...........sorry if i rubbed in the 3G.........lol
lol, the EV-DO coverage here in Bucks County isn't any different then that of at&t's 3G coverage. It's hit or miss with both of them as far as I've seen. One thing is for sure though, they are both very fast with data when you do have a strong signal.
oh yeah..............Sprint does a really good job and i cant wait cuz Sprint is getting the RAZR2 on Wednesday..........i guess thats tomorrow.......lol.............but im excited cuz itll be one of the first phones that Sprint will get before Verizon.........and its supposed to be a big sound quality and speed improvement over the V3's
Sprint does have some nice handsets compared to Verizon's. But unfortunately there is absolutely NO signal be it 1x or EV-DO in or around my house. My next door neighbor has Sprint, and they have to walk down the street just to be able to get a signal at all....I refuse to give money to a company that can't provide me with at least some coverage where I live.
well......the question is how much would you use you cell at home.............do you still have a landline or are you a cellphone-only person............cuz Sprint has forced roaming and you could just use it when you are home and avoid calls so you dont do too many roaming calls...............does your service get better when you go into work or when you go elsewhere?? chech the Sprint coverage maps...........cuz if it means roaming when yu are at home then you could save a lot of money
No I have Verizon FIOS for my land line service. But I still use my cell phone in my house. If I wanted CDMA and EV-DO, I would have kept Verizon. But unfortunately Verizon doesn't use SIM cards.
Seems like that happens a lot. I had 3G at our mailbox in the start of our street but four houses up at our place nothing. It remained like that for a good 6 months and I come back from vacation and voila, I have 3G everywhere in the house. I do have to say the signal is solid & there has never been any dropped calls or anything other than crystal clear reception & call clarity. I don't know if it is the Blackjack & the Treo or the network but I am content either way. So hang in there, it's going to happen.
Ok I will try to hang in there but I want it to happen sooner then later it's hard to wait so long. Maybe they will do a larger area at once vs 1 tower at a time.
i hate how Verizon cripples their phones.............there's practically a whole different experience between "Sprint cdma" and "Verizon cdma".........................and they can move your contacts over in the store
You can't change it on the Razr & I can't find the way to change it on the 400, which I have 3 of & am trying it out to see how it is compared to the Razr. I think the only way to do it on the Razr is modding the phone, but I am trying to find that answer out & don't want to mod my new phone just yet. MobilePrincess could you either post it here or PM me with how to change the Network settings from 2G to 3G on the LG CU400 please.
How to turn off 3G on the LG CU400: 1) Open the flip, and enter 277634#*# 2) Scroll down to #5 modem setting and click OK 3) Scroll down to #2 network mode and click OK 4) Click OK again on #1 network mode 5) Scroll down to #2 2G only and click OK 6) Press clear until you are out of all menu's 7) Power the phone off, wait 15 seconds, and power on Tom, this is how Learned to do it over at the at&t forums. So far reception is great in just 2G mode. And I have experienced an increase in battery life as well. There are instructions on how to do this on the V3xx that you have if you want to turn off 3G on your phone........ Follow the steps above, to change the settings back to "Dual Mode" (default setting), or to 3G only on the CU400. Let me know if this helps on the CU400's that you have.
I believe you can not select the band settings on the at&t branded V3xx (just one more reason to buy unbranded phones). However, with the new version of the P2K commander, 4.9.C (i think), it is relatively simple to seem edit and it is not any kind of irreversible modding that might mess up your phone. I sent you a link via PM. Please let me know if you try it. Hope this helps.
