I checked out the panel antennas being put up at the Ralph's shopping center off Hillcrest.
    My question is:
From what I can see, the antennas are not active and I have full signal around that area as well as in both directions along Hillcrest (same direction the antennas are facing). So what is the purpose of these antennas?

Also, I found a spot where you can kind of see the roof of Macy's (Oaks Mall) where the Sprint antennas may be (i did not have binoculars with me, so I could not see that much detail on the roof). The addy is 509 Marin St. (this street feeds out to Hillcrest across from the mall).

Full signal on a Sanyo 4500 is meaningless. The older Sanyo models have inflated signal meters that will often show full signal in a weak to moderate coverage area. My A500 only showed 1-2 bars there so it does need improvement.

Thanks, for the update I thought it was going to be Sprint. Nice to see all the improvements in Ventura County.

Anyone have any updates on that antenna in the Ralphs shopping center on Ventu Park Rd.? is it complete yet. I might have time to drop by tomorrow to check it out when I'm in Encino but not sure yet.

As of this week, the exterior fiinishing and painting remains uncompleted. I don't know if the actual equipment is activate yet or not.

Thanks for the update. Yeah these type of projects tend to drag on a long time. There was a clock tower in Cerritos that took like 5 months to complete last year.

As of Sunday, Sept. 26 I was getting 1-2 bars on my Samsung A700 on Hillctest in the Ralphs shopping center area. I also noticed it had boards on all 4 sides of both towers, but not yet painted/completed. Also as of Monday, Sept. 27 the tower at the end of Lynn Rd. is still not complete as well.

Well I wasn't able to make it to Newbury Park (Ralphs shopping center) to see the antenna today. But hopefully they'll make the final psuh to get it on the air soon. Are you sure the one on Lynn Rd. is a Sprint site?

I believe so (its way at the end of Lynn Rd. - heading toward CSU Channel Islands). It has one or two flat pannels that look like they would hold telecommunications equipment/boxes. These pannels currently have nothing on them indicating it is still not complete. There are also wires hanging loose and not connected to anything.

That's very unusual for a microcell to take that long to complete. Sprint has typically been known to put them up in less than 3 weeks total.

By the way in case anyone's interested there's yet another new Sprint site in Studio City along Ventura Blvd. This is the second new one they've put up along Ventura in the past 12 months.

if you got signal where u didnt before and there's no other locations that a potential site was found...trust me they fried that puppy up. You'd be amazed how desperate they get to get something fired up to get it on air for the customers. I just feel sorry for the workers that have to stand in front of those antennas working on them.

Hey foofighter, last year Sprint had an edison installation in Mission Viejo (Oso Pkwy & I-5) that sat for like 4 months before they even attached the panels and complete construction. Any idea why that would happen? Hang up with the city or something? Anyway in January of this year it finally went on air and now I have coverage inside the Best Buy near there where for years was roaming.

larry a lot of time w/ these carriers is they push push push to get sites zoned/BP approved and lease signed. THen you turn it over to them and they site on it, for when they need it especially if it's an 05 build site they'll back burner it and keep it in their back pocket or they just wait till they are budgeted for that build.

I know exactly where that one is too it's a low site relatively speaking. I did the flag pole site just south of there in that water district for CW...it's looking pretty delapitated these days from lack of upkeep :(

Yep I know were that Cingular flagpole is. I remember when it first went up (about 3 years ago?) I was wishing it was going to be for Sprint. Had to wait another couple of years before Sprint put one up there.

On my trip up the 101 on Wednesday I was able to spot the Sprint site on the roof of Macy's. It's very well disgusised behind fiberglass that's painted to match the rest of the structure. I had to look very hard to find it but I noticed the areas where the color was just a little bit off. Those are the areas that have the panels hidden behind them. :D

I have tried and tried to look for those panels and have not been able to locate them. I take it they are in front of or attached or behind the brown wooden wall/fence that is on the roof of Macy's. Do you remember exactly where they are?

Yes they are hidden behind the brown fence on the roof of Macy's. You can't actually see any 'antennas' because they are hidden behind paraphets designed to match the fence . There is one sector that faces the freeway and two other sectors. It takes a well trained eye to spot the location but they are there. I believe Cingular also has a site on the roof of Macy's.

Re: Help with service at Westlake High School

I need to buy a phone for a high schooler. I want to go with a prepaid phone..I was told today at a cell store that Cingular and TMobile will not work there...I know Cingular doesnt because my Cingular phone will not work in North Ranch. Since I dont have the luxury of returning the phone, Im asking for anybodys help on which service provider WILL actually work in this area....before I throw a lot of money away:)) The man at the store said he felt Sprint and Verizon were my only choices...I just hate to buy with them and find out they wont work either...Any suggestions, comments, hints would be appreciated:))))

It's hard to say which service will work best in the particular area you need it to. Best thing to do is to try out the service and if it doesn't work you have 14 days to cancel and return phone.

Gosh... It's fun to read these posts about T.O. :browani: Perhaps I'll get around to publishing all of the sites I've worked on in T.O. over the last 15 years.

I have many, many site photos from T.O. at my own site, including a series of photos of the undergrounding of KMLT's new transmitter. :cool2:

:browani: On Tuesday, May 16, the Thousand Oaks City Council approved a Sprint/Nextel tower to be installed on Erbes Rd on top of a traffic signal (i believe).

Actually, the approval of the appeal filed by Sprint for 801 1/2 Falmouth (at Erbes) was for a radome on top of a light standard.

Yeah I heard about that hearing and asked JK about the outcome. Good news.
