I am graduating this May with a B.S. in Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology from Middle Tennessee State University. The job market around here is pretty weak right now, and I have no verifiable work history. This is not helping.

I found a job at Asurion as an Assistant Repair Tech, which I'm thinking about applying for. The company seems like a good place to work with other positions I could move up to in time, otherwise I wouldn't really be giving this job serious consideration.

My question is: About how much would you guess this job would pay?

Also, am I nuts for even considering this job with when I have B.S. in Engineering Technology?

It doesn't hurt to apply... a degree in a field and actual work experience are so different, even if you don't take the job the interview experience is well worth it. The first job I really wanted I completely blew the interview for. In fact I would suggest you try to interview as much as possible before you interview for a job you really want (insurance companies will recruit like crazy and I always find them a good start for interview practice.)

Actually working with electronics even if not your dream job is better than flipping burgers at Mickey D's... of course there's nothing wrong with flipping burgers if that's what you enjoy (inside info... Mickey D's doesn't flip their burgers...) I have friend with a degree in finance that continued working in fast food because he liked it.

I have another friend that got hired as a wireless store tech, and worked his way into being a tower tech for Verizon.... you have to start somewhere.

Heh, my last job was as a cook at Hardees. They don't flip their burgers either. They put them on a conveyor belt that takes them into the broiler. At the end they actually do flip as they fall off the belt.

That's right, Hardees burgers FLIP THEMSELVES!

There are plenty of jobs for me to move up to at Asurion. I could have my green belt in Six Sigma in just a few months and move up to Quality Assurance.

Also, the Assistant Repair Tech spot is open on all 3 shifts. So I could work there and still take more classes.

I flipped burgers for a day when I was young...the boss liked me cause I worked hard and did whatever he asked me to do (including digging out the 12 snowmobiles that were 8 feet down in the snow!). With so many kids coming outta college with big dreams of the corner office a week after graduation (gotta sober up first!)...don't set yourself up for the diappointment of real life. You need to start somewhere, and Asurion is a quality company. The volume of merchandise that rolls in and out will blow your mind! Talk about a recession proof business! poor economy, can't afford a new phone, throw yours out the window and call your carrier! Asurion will send ya one! They are huge in Verizon phones, and the experience may help you get into a carrier or manufacturer. LG is in Huntsville, Pantech in Atlanta..plenty of work close by ...but get to work first! Get the experience!
