I just read this article on The Verge: FANBOYS: Have you ever loved something so much it hurt? Inevitably (not exclusively) it focuses on phones. I think the article does a good job of having you think about the way you talk and write about the products you choose. This topic would make a good poll question. So ask yourself - Am I a fanboy or fangirl? (For any type of product or service.) Your votes are anonymous.
I prefer some brands over others, for various reasons, but I try to keep an open mind, and I'm not locked to any of them blindly. My last few phones have been Nokia/Symbian, BlackBerry, Motorola/Android and now back to BlackBerry, and I've liked each of them.
One part of me is a fan of well engineered, dependable, and quality equipment. The other part of me is a fan of fun things even if they are totally impractical and unnecessary. The price plays very little to no part in it. I am as much a fan of my Cooper S as I am of my SLK 55. As for devices, I am a big fan of my iPhone 5 but not of my iPad Air. I lend to gravitate towards certain manufactures but I am not dedicated enough to be classified a fan girl. However I do tend to be become one SOMETIMES - It depends on the product / situation.
I have used them all, and I have my likes and dislikes with each OS. They all have their drawbacks and strengths in some form or another. It comes down to what works for you.
My first phone was an NEC. I have owned Motorola, Nokia and Blackberry phones. Mostly Nokia’s, before the iPhone 3G. Currently Apple is my favorite mobile phone, although I always look at new phones as they come out. It is so different now, since phones are computers, and integrate with our other products, that the whole eco system has become a factor. For computers I’ve used ThinkPads, Toshiba’s, Dells running windows for 25 years, and just purchased a new Dell laptop with Windows 8 last month. These have been my work computers. Mac’s are my personal favorite in the last 6 years for home and personal use, especially when I’m responsible for the network and IT support for family. I admire, as Charlyee and others, good engineering and pleasing industrial design, almost art, that is packaged in a phone. I get what Jobs and Apple are seeking…and Nokia. That is why I have favored Nokia’s in the past above others, so you could say I was a fanboy of Nokia’s too for the same reasons. But for reasons that are beyond me, admiration of Nokia’s engineering and design do not inflame as much venom as the same admiration for Apple products. I never cared for Motorola products, with the exception of the Razr design. I don’t roam around forums stirring up trouble, criticizing others choices of products, especially if I never owned one. I do, however, respond and correct criticisms of my choices from ignorant and uninformed postings, especially when they have no or insufficient experience with my choice of phone. Some nasty comments are just uncalled for. I felt it is only fair to other readers to correct errors like these and give a different interpretations of news stories. Rumors become facts if left to stand unanswered. I guess it is my critical scientific background that make me bristle at the tech and general ignorance out there in the news and forums. And sometimes I learn new things about the capabilities of other phones too. Mostly, I just like to share fun things I’ve found about my phone or accessories with other people. Even more fun if they own the same phone. You cannot beat having fun. Why negative fanboys like to jump in and rain on a positive thread, is beyond me. I never understood what it is about Apple products that stir some people to hatred, even when they have no experience with the products. But it is real and has been there for decades. I guess overall, I become a ‘fanboy’ based on strength the negative ‘fanboyism’ of Apple haters, who cannot accept that Apple has become a successful new kid on the block in the once dominant Nokia-BB-Motorola phone triad.
In terms of phones, I am finding myself not to be as brand loyal like I used to be. I was Motorola lover. I used a Q, a Bionic and a RAZR MAXX. In the past, I envied those Moto flip phones; however, I fell for the Samsung and the Note phablet line and it hasn't been the same since. For a while, I was considering a return back to Moto, but I'd miss some of Samsung features...and then this week, the Lenovo deal happened. The Moto halo has definitely been erased. I am an Oakley die hard; I have several pair. I refuse to buy anything else, and you cannot get me to budge. I guess I am not a fanboy; I am fan of brands but I dont bash others for having different tastes. I don't care for cheap knockoffs (like ZTE); but then again, I just avoid such brands.
Absolutely I am. Udi's Gluten Free Everything Bagels are the absolute best out there! Oh wait! Are we talk'n wireless here? In that case, yes, I'm still a fan girl of products that work for me. However, I am aware that just because something works for me doesn't necessarily make it the best product out there or that it would work for everyone else.
This was a hard question to answer due its ambiguous nature. I said that I am not a fanboy at all. However, that may not be completely accurate, but then none of the options were. If any manufacturer starts shafting it's customers, I'm always glad to abandon ship, even if i have been a loyal buyer. This goes back to my post about vendors punishing their customers. I was loyal to AT&T for many decades. But then their degraded service and support made me dump them. I currently love Samsung products but I've read that they are beginning to enforce some policies that shaft the customer. When companies get arrogant, they don't deserve my business.
Sorry if the poll answers didn't cover ALL possible positions - that would be hard. What is the INVERSE of a fanboy? That's probably what I am. I'm more likely to express and irrational dislike for a company or product than be a cheerleader for one. For example: Under Armour <-- Nowadays it is neither under nor armor and they plaster their ridiculously stupid logo everywhere! I avoid their products like the plague. I voted SOMETIMES in the poll. I'm probably most fanboyish towards COSTCO. :hyper:
