I've got that beat. -27 with a -47 wind chill. Makes me glad I'm not a mechanic anymore, I could still be out in the back parking lot getting trucks started that are towed in dead in these conditions.
I can't get over the massive swing in temperatures many places in this country have during Winter and Summer. Chicago could be 105 degrees with humidity in August, and -10 during January! That's well over a 100 degree difference in temperature. Being a Californian all my life, our swings are no more than 50 to 70 degrees at the worst (110 for a high in the Summer, 40 for a high in Winter - and both are extremes at that). It's incredible to me that the shift in the intensity of the sun on Earth (because of Earth's angled rotation around the sun during a full calendar year) affects temperatures so drastically. In any case, it's another crystal clear 80 degree day (NO smog whatsoever! ) here in L.A. This is one of those times I'm grateful to live where I do (even though many times I think I'm crazy to live here...).
The arctic air is finally on it's way out up here in northern Michigan. The next few days should be in the middle teens, which is way better than -20 or -30.
All the cold air is sliding east ......... -1 at my house this morning and lots of -15 to -20 observations in north central PA. However, up in Alaska it's now in the 30s in Fairbanks - and it was -50 there last week!
I have an even worse thought for you. Yesterday it was a 100 degrees swing for me going from inside the house to outside, being that it was -33 when I left for a morning meeting and -35 when I got home a few hours later. Fortunately the cold weather is gone now, we should not see any below zero in the near future.
Wow! I loving Northern California more than ever. Drove for less than an hour yesterday and enjoyed a beautiful day of snow and skiing. Back home today enjoying sunshine and temps in the mid-70s.
Still very warm here in Los Angeles. I don't remember having a January any where near this warm and for such an extended amount of time!
Yay it's snowin here. about 3 inches by later tonight & Tuesday. Charlotte & Raleigh - Under a Winter storm warning, 3-5 inches. It's been about a year, and I miss the snow. In NJ I was used to it.... see what happens when you move.
Whoa... I forgot about the outside temp versus inside temp difference. That must be quite a shock to the system (but I'm betting you're relatively used to it, though ). Like larry said, it's still ridiculously warm here in SoCal. It was above 80 degrees for the 10th straight day. It's bad enough summer lasts more than 6 months here with heat, to have it in January is irritating. I know I should be grateful for living in such a warm place when it's like an icebox everywhere else, but it's Winter, and I'd like to see Winter weather. We DESPERATELY NEED RAIN!!! Looks like we'll get some (along with a cool down) later this week.
Today we are supposed to see local low 40's! Yay! Oh wait, back to the minus temps for lows on Saturday Nevermind
We had our first Freeze Warning issued for last night and early this morning. According to the local news, our temperature was 34 overnight. Inland areas (basically anything east of I-75) had temperatures below 32 overnight (some deep inland areas were in the mid 20s last night). A lot of areas still had a frost, though.
Southern California's finally cooling down after a record 12-day January heat wave. They say we're supposed to get some rain today...I hope so because we need it BADLY!!!
Gamer...doesn't that kill the palm trees and those little lizards and other tropical plant and animal life?
The animals do not like it especially the Alligators. When it is cold, Alligators do not want to eat until they can warm up their core body temperature. Most animals, however, can adapt to temperature chnges, and usually go into cover (Cypress heads, Slash Pine, Marshes, etc) overnight during the few times we get really cold. My dad and I covered our Impatiens that we planted last fall (we planted 40+ of the flowers) since they can be killed or severely damaged if they are not covered. Other than that, the various Palm trees and other native plants down here can survive the cold pretty well (since it doesn't remain cold overnight for very long).
Similar rules apply here in California. Our palm trees are a sturdy lot too. They do quite well in any weather (of course they love the heat, though)...
Yep....the low tonight (Friday) is supposed to be 3 here..with minus something wind chill. Here we go again
OMG!!! I wasn 't aware but the low yesterday morning was 18 in Tallahassee I really didn't notice because I was at the bus stop munching on some freshly baked french fries... at least the high yeaterday was 59 Today's low was 30 and It got to 70 today. I just heard on my local news that a homeless man was found dead on Thursday morning and the extreme cold played a contributing factor.
Here in the N.E. we will be back in the deep freeze this weekend, I was starting to enjoy the balmy 30's we had the past couple of days.
Oh come on, it's already 0 here on our way to -18 tonight. I thought you Illinois boys were supposed to be a hardy bunch.
It's -12 outside right now with the windchill. It's snowing a little bit also. Although, I was enjoying our freezing rain that we received earlier today, it was a scorching 31 degrees!!
It will be hot here in comparison to the Midwest and the Northeast... the lows will be near 50 and the highs will be near 70 for the next few days
-18 outside with the windchill. Today was a horrible day. 30 mph winds with 40+ gusts. There is nothing but wide open fields around my house, so it's pretty much like the arctic. All tundra.
Wow, Alienware, stay safe. I'm sure you've been through nightmarish weather like this before, but still, it's scary when you've got nature going nuts outside, especially dangerous cold like this.
Thanks Mobile Mike, when it gets bad like that I usually don't go outside at all, unless I need to drive somewhere. Even then I let my truck warm up for at least 10 minutes. I hope everyone else is safe from all this cold weather we have been having. There have been I think 2 deaths in our county from the cold.
