Someone needs to get their math straight and learn to count the 12 months in a year.

    Jan - Mar = Q1
    Apr - Jun = Q2
    Jul - Sept. = Q3
    Oct - Dec = Q4

@KevinJames, The article is correct, Apple's fiscal year does not follow the annual year. As a matter of fact neither does ours - our fiscal year runs from July to June, so our first quarter is Jul-Sep.

Similarly, Apples's fiscal year runs from October through September, so their first quarter is Oct-Dec, and their third quarter ends in late June.

Yeah, I don't know why some companies do that. IIRC, Cisco's fiscal year ends in July. Go figure.

I had assumed, apparently wrongly, that a fiscal year for any particular company is based on the month they established themselves as a business. Like people and their birthdate celebration, a company would have a fiscal year that ends 12 months after their 1st year of business and subsequent years following. However, that doesn't seem to be the case.

I think they do that to confuse people and to start arguments/discussions.

At present there is 800+ page thread on a Mac forum arguing about when Apple says Fourth quarter do they mean Oct-Dec (annual quarter) or July-Sep(their fiscal quarter). Apparently there is speculation that new macs will be coming out in the fourth quarter, so that could be as early as July or as late as December.

My wife says that the fiscal year doesn't match the calendar year so that people can have their holidays. Year end close is a lot of work.

@dmapr: Interesting. I wonder what Donald the comb-over Trump would say?
