It seems that the lost iPhone was real!!! Apples lawyers ask for lost/stolen device back. Finder was paid $5,000 for phone.

Here is the Apple engineer who 'left' it and the whole story about who found it.

How Apple Lost the Next iPhone - Leak - Gizmodo

Personally, I think it was planned. The details are pretty shady.

Gizmodo describes the circumstances surrounding how the next generation iPhone was lost and even names the Apple employee that lost the device. Gray Powell an Apple Software Engineer is said to have left the pre-release iPhone at Gourmet Haus Staudt, a bar in Redwood City on March 18th.

Gizmodo's source was said to be sitting next to Powell and picked up the prototype iPhone after it was left on his bar stool.
The person who ended up with the iPhone asked around, but nobody claimed it. He thought about that young guy sitting next to him, so he and his friend stayed there for some time, waiting. Powell never came back.

The lost iPhone reportedly booted up and "seemed like a normal iPhone". It wasn't until the following morning that it had been remote wiped by Apple.

The Associated Press reveals that Gawker (Gizmodo's parent company) paid $5000 to obtain the device.

This is sad and pathetic either way I look at it:

    1) if an Apple employee actually did leave a secret prototype phone in a bar, then it's pretty idiotic that Apple doesn't keep their secret stuff under lock and key better.... which is an odd scenario given the "iron fist" control of their OS's.

    Or

    2) If this is a marketing ploy to generate "buzz" then it's a pretty bad one, I'd give a "C-" or a "D" to the college kids who thought that one up . ...and a "D-" for the weak "uh, dude, can I have my secret phone back now?" e-mail

From a PR point of view, it clearly worked, so it's an A+

It will forestall some from buying another phone within the next two months.

It may also have been a way to get consumer opinions about the design, which is a departure from the last few iPhones. Macrumors even had set up a poll.

If Steve Jobs farts it will get blogged about, Macrumors will set up a poll, etc. I'm really getting sick and tired of it.

I didn't see that one blogged. Got a reference?

Let's watch our manners now. One has to admit that all WA's members are geeks at heart and that 80-90% of the posts nowadays on WA reflect news, rumors, discussions, critiques about new equipment, services and the like and it is mostly non-Apple news items and all are bloggable. It is not all high tech news here on WA or anywhere. I get enough of that on my job. Apple's PR stunt /mistake makes money for them, the bloggers and the owners of WA too.

Just sit back and enjoy, we all come here to learn the latest news, and it is what it is.

No disrespect to anyone. Apple is a marketing/PR genius. They get in the news almost daily. They can play the media in a way other companies can only dream about. They made themselves into some kind of reality-show. Setve Jobs and Kate Gosselin. Daily. Every day. Beat it to death. I'm tired of it, but apparently other people can't stop talking about the next iWhatever and what is Kate gonna do next (and I haven't even watched American TV in the last 10 years). If someone makes a phone or has 8 kids, that's great. But that's maybe news for a day, I don't need to keep reading and reading and reading about it...

Quick example: go to Google news (US version) and search Apple.
    Results 1 – 10 of about 52,612 for apple. (0.14 seconds)

...and now the worlds largest phone maker Nokia:
    Results 1 – 10 of about 8,440 for Nokia. (0.12 seconds)

You forget that not all of those results for "apple" are referring to Apple Computer's products. How many are apple pie recipes?

I figure this is about as much a marketing stunt as New Coke was a marketing stunt.

Go to Google finnish site and just type Nokia or Apple

    Nokia 239,000,00
    Apple 299,000,000

US site for Nokia phones or Apple phones

    Nokia phones: 38,200,000
    Apple phones: 49,900,000

    kinda of a wash, eh?

As Charlyee will tell you, Nokia is more popular outside the US, so Apple has to try harder being not # 1. So they do more PR.

I'm with you on Kate, the Octomom, Angelina and Brad, Sandra Bullock's cheating husband, etc., I see the headlines, but I never click on the link. Life is too short. News for a day is right. But phones, now that's important! And. Secret phones that haven't been released yet! Be still my beating heart!

Actually, I enjoyed the story about the losing and the finding of the phone more than the story about the quickly wiped and then disassembled phone. Let's hear it for German beer!

You guys are Googling regular internet sites, I mean go to Google News then do a search in there. That will return only current news articles.
Google Finland doesn't have the "news Search" feature, but has a "Blog Search" feature instead ("Blogit"). Searching "iPhone" there has 87 200 000 results, while searching "Nokia" returns 22 700 000. Anyway it was just a quick example, even without these statistics, there's no denying Apple is in the news daily. Actually, now this morning it's again something about some app getting pulled from their app store...

Yea, normally I don't comment on Apple articles because I don't have anything intelligent to contribute to it. This time I chimed in because of the pure ridiculousness of it. I admit, it's like rubbernecking at a car accident, or watching the Ricki Lake show, but I guess that's whats at the bottom of Apples marketing. Go for the lowest common base. I guess it works.

I will admit that you know more about celebrity people than I do. I never heard of Kate Josselin? or Ricki Lake before WA! ;)

I'm not sure of your point with all the stats, but I agree that Nokia certainly does have a 'tin ear' when it comes to marketing in the USA. They could learn from Apple, and stem the blood letting with their high end smartphone lineups, worldwide. Nokia dominates worldwide in mass market lowest common base phones. They could spend less on lawyers and law suits and more on learning the market interests here.

I always liked Finland based Nokia as a conservative, heavy hitter in the phone market. They were dominant during the late '90s here, I think. But they ignored the market for flip phones and let Motorola and the imports take market away. They ignored the geeks and came way too late with Quad band phones, and never with Quad-UTMS 3G worldwide phones, smart or dumb. Ask me, Charlyee and others how frustrated we became with Nokia. If Nokia hadn't stiffed the US market with their best phones, I might have bought that instead of an Apple. It was real close.

Do you know that joke? A pair of Norwegians, Swedes and Fins are deserted on a island. A few months have passed and the Swedes were off having sex every day; the Norwegians had built a sauna, and the two Fins were still waiting to be introduced? :) A lesson for Nokia there. Their marketing is a little too stiff and arrogant. They act as if they know what is best for the US market, but they bet wrong time after time. Apple thinks they know what is best too; but their bet was successful: 50 million iphones in a few years sold (plus another 35 million Touches). Maybe some day they will stumble, but it doesn't seem that time is here yet.

I'm happy that an American company has taken the lead in the phone industry once again (remember Motorola?) :). Apple found a high end niche that was just ripe, and ignored by the established industry. They are a high tech darling with computers, phones, and ipods that in the USA are certainly more popular then Nokia is today. And Nokia is furious about it, because it is leaking into their worldwide markets now. Apple's stock has doubled in the last year alone. They will never best Nokia, because Apple probably will not enter the low end market that Nokia dominates worldwide. Does anyone use a Nokia smartphone in the US?

And Apple makes solid phones. Nokia, Motorola, and others moved from metal to plastic metal parts on the outside. My iPhone has real metal trim; it's the phone antennas. Our Bold 9700 (a nice phone btw) "metal" bezel has a black hole on it already; I thought it was metal, but it is only metalized plastic. I like the high end feel that all Apple products deliver- like the aluminum clad MacBooks. They have kept the standards up while I watched other mgfr's become cheap looking. My high end taste, no apologies!

And of course, in the news, every other phone manufacturer brings out their newest phone as the iPhone killer...and that makes more news for Apple. They are the standard today like it or not. And we geeks at WA are just another form of the celebrity watchers. We come here to WA for tech help and to help others. But mainly we come here for the most recent juiciest phone or carrier news, or to post the same. We're the same breed.

But I'll refrain from posting any more Apple news on WA, if everyone feels it is too much circuit overload!

P.S. MobileMike, the more action here on WA, the more revenue for the owners of WA!

    ...oopps, sorry :O

Yea, I know Swedes and Finns pretty well, I spent alot of time in that neck of the woods. Got alot of good jokes as well ;)

Please don't censure yourself on my or anyone elses account. As much as I dislike Apple, I dislike censureship even more and believe everyone should have their right to say/express their beliefs. I just usually refrain from posting in Apple threads since I don't want to "feed the beast" and don't usually have anything useful to contribute anyway. This thread was an occasional exception....

Wow, this sure generated a variety of discussion covering the gamut and enjoyable reading as well.

So, I will "feed the beast" and add my 2 cents to it. ;)

RR, If you think there is too much Apple news, don't ever call an AT&T Store in the US. It starts with a recording that says "Thank you for calling AT&T , home of Apples iPhone 3Gs.........". even though you know excatly which option to choose, you have to wait until that ends.

viewfly, I had no idea who all the Kate et all were, before I started reading this thread either. I defnitely agree with you that Nokia has let us down in the quad band market and with the lack of available SmartPhones in the US, and yes Nokia is still the most popular device in the rest of the world.

I loved you car analogy, but looks like you edited it out.?

In general, I do like modding my phones. I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to with my BB, but I can bring it to near death as well as I could with my WM phones. Does this tinkering make it a better phone than stock, probably not; but as everyone who likes tinkering will say "but it's fun".

As for the iPhone, I do not want one, obviously based on personal preference. The reasons run the gamut from having to jailbreak to get it unlocked to all manufacturing being done in China (I don't think anyone wants me to get up on that soap box again :D)

Interestingly, I have nothing against the device itself, I think it is a great device and has set a trend. I have a bigger problem with the iPhonies I know in real life, I would hate to be classified as one of "them". I don't mean the geeks on these forum, so please no one take offense.

These people not only believe the iPhone is God's gift but want to shove it down everyone else's throat.

Starting from a close co-worker, who had the IPhone 2G when I had a 3G device, trying to convince me that 3G was unnecessary since it not only drains the battery but causes cancer and that is the reason Apple left it out. Then there are people who say things like "My iPhone says it's going to rain", "I have that information right here on my iPhone", "the pictures are here in my iPhone" and much much more. I honestly have never heard anyone say "my Nokia/Motorola/Android/BB/ says it is going to rain.

    Ok I am done now,

    Thank for listening.

:D I use a Nokia "smartphone" in the US. I find it to be solidly built and I wouldn't have an iPhone or anything iPhone-like for anything in the world, although I do think it is a neat device - just not at all what I want and I'm ready for all the other manufacturers to stop chasing it.

I wish my E70-2 had 3G, but since I'd probably just have to turn it off in my area anyway (at&t) I guess it really doesn't matter too much that it doesn't.

And I have no clue about Kate Gosselin or Ricki Lake. iPhone commercials?? :O The only one that has caught my attention recently is where their iPhone tells them of a dog available for adoption. :) (I don't know - that might make it worth having, Charlyee. :p )

Lol, I don't believe so, now if Sheldon had one ( he uses a Mac after all), it might be worth considering. :p.

The only cellphone I have seen is in Leonard's hands and it's a flip phone.

I passed by the Apple store in Geneva recently, and it gave me a creepy vibe. Looked like the inside of a spaceship or something. I was expecting Steve Jobs to come out of the back room at any moment wearing a black robe and handing out cups of Kool-Aide :p

)...is that a typical Apple store design? I haven't seen many...)

...oh, now you guys got me, I have no clue who Sheldon and Leonard are :headscrat

Actually Charlyee, Leonard started using an iPhone I believe sometime late last year during one of the episodes. :p

His phone rang, and he pulled out an iPhone.

Look about two-thirds of the way down the bulleted list (http://bigbangtheory.wikia.com/wiki/Leonard_Hofstadter).

Thanks Gamer, my mistake. Somehow I thought he was going to tweet in the last episode from a flip phone. Actually that's the first I saw a phone on that show but then again I am hanging on to Sheldon's every word and facial expressions so I probably never noticed.

hme83 first told me about the show and I got addicted after the first one.

Atleast it's a relief that Sheldon doesn't have an iPhone. :D

Sorry, doesn't seem to want to go back on-topic just yet :)

Say what you must about Ricki Lake, but this exchange was, IMHO, priceless. Unfortunately, besides this and Shirley MacLaine the movie has no redeeming qualities... definitely liked the French version better.

Oh, and even after reading this thread I still have no idea who Kate, Leonard & Sheldon are...

Huh. I've never even noticed the gadgets used in the show - I'm probably too busy admiring the clothes. :D

Interesting - I guess Sheldon can't be my hero anymore, at least not until he makes the move to Android. ;)

Personally, I doubt that this is a marketing stunt. Anything is possible, but this phone isn't supposed to be released for several months. I don't think Apple wants this kind of publicity now. It seems that they wiped and disabled the phone as soon as the employee reported it lost, and that ony leaves the rather mundane hardware disassembly. A front-facing camera! Wow! This has only been rumored for about a year.

A strategy like this runs the risk that (without the proper framing) the reality is seen to be less than the hype (the iWhatever has no clothes).

I've been following Apple for a long time and I admit that unreleased devices "in the wild" are a rarity. But even Apple has had their share of Chinese manufacturing prototypes appearing on websites. And mobile devices are different. To really test them, you need to move out of the lab. It makes sense that they would give a few to employees to take out of 1 Infinite Loop.

But would they intentionally set that employee up for exposure and ridicule? Would they risk that the whole thing would be revealed to be a hoax? What would we think of the great Apple marketing machine then? Too juvenile, not their style. They don't neet guerilla marketing. They're Apple!
