Engadget is detailing Apple's announcement of it's iPhone 3.0 software update: Live from Apple's iPhone OS 3.0 preview event
Iphone 3.0 June- MMS, Cut/Paste/ Notes/etc Free for iPhone, coming in June. Lots of stuff....for consumer interest, they nearly gave us everything: MMS Landscape Keyboard in Mail, Notes, everywhere Forwarding in SMS multiple photo cut and paste into email application Cut n Paste, even with third party appls Notes now synch too. Landscape keyboard everywhere Voice Notes - recorder Peer to Peer Push notifications new Map stuff Stereo Bluetooth upgrades to current appls - like stock lots of developer stuff too and better gaming and More
Re: Iphone 3.0 June- MMS, Cut/Paste/ Notes/etc And push notification will be done in a way to preserve battery life.
Also, I thought this was interesting, amidst the report of the iPhone 3.0 Press Conference: More from Fortune SW
It also has developers kits for appls to include turn by turn directions with Maps. Also, Streaming video And searching in Mail: from, to, subject and so on. multiple forwarding/ deleting in mail too. Also, can allow accessory plug in's like a direct plug Blood pressure monitor (wired or BT) and the same with a glucose blood test. interesting. This is a major update
And last but not least this is firmware that works on the current iPhone 3G. MMS and AD2P only works on the 3G not the 1 gen iphone. Gotta force those upgrades!!!
This will be a major update. Now I'd like to see what people will be complaining about after this update...LOL! (poor camera, no video recording, etc.) But seriously, this type of update is what Apple needs in order to defeat jailbreaking. The only reason I jailbreak is due to Apple OS own shortcomings, such as copy and paste and MMS, both of which will be taken care of with 3.0. Now I will have to see if there will still be a reason for me to jailbreak after this...
Yep, it is a major addition. You know, even though most of the new things are items that didn't find that I needed or even used (cut and paste, MMS). It is nice to have them, "because they are there". Some I will use, like forwarded SMS. At least it now hows the feature that my old Nokia had (and more). And it will quiet that torrent of complainers about MMS etc. But, I feel like I'm getting a new phone in 3 months. I like learning how to use new features, and that is part of the fun with getting a new phone. So this major upgrade will give me a lot to put my hands around and entertained.
That's right. It's almost like a new free phone. But they said nothing about a new updated unit which rumors say will be out this summer. It's supposed to have improved hardware, like more system memory which will allow multitasking (or backgrounding as it is known.) Currently the lack of system memory is the reason Apple doesn't allow apps to run in the background.
I watching the rerun of yesterday's event. Aside for all the goodies for the developers, for the consumer level, there are 100 new features besides the ones I listed above. 100! Watching the event is well worth it. go to http://events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/0903lajkszg/event/index.html
Watching the demo on multiple selection of photos and pasting them into email, one can understand why Apple thinks MMS is ancient technology. But they gave it anyway
You apple fans make me laugh. MMS, A2DP, turn by turn navi, copy paste? Seriously? It's amazing that anyone purchased this "smart" phone that can't do the tasks that my parents free sanyo flip phone can do. And once again, first generation mac buyers get burned. How in the world did the hardware change so much from the edge model to the 3G model that the edge model cannot support MMS. Come on. Where is simple voice dialing, that just about every other free phone on the market since 2000 has had? Camera flash? Video recording? Ability for a 2nd battery? multitasking ( i know it slows down the phone, but that is MY choice)
Yankees368, with all due respect, this is YOUR opinion. Though you make some good points, Apple fans are just happy to have a phone/iPod combination. This is by far the biggest advantage with this phone over anything else. All of the other feature of the iPhone are cool, though not as thorough (at least until this next software update) as other smartphones, it still is an excellent device. As spoiled as all of us have become with the standard feature-set of current phones, it's hard not to expect the iPhone to have the same. Apple's smart. They know their market and have effectively positioned the phone with the advantages it has versus the things it lacks. The iPhone wasn't for me, but I'm still very happy with my iPod. It's the MP3 device that works perfectly for me. So I'm not an all-out Apple fan, but I like their products as I do with Microsoft as well. It sound's like you're not an Apple fan, and that's your right and choice, but for those who are core Apple fans and those with an appreciation for them, it's not so amazing why people have purchased the iPhone, even with features it lacks. Let's not resort to bashing (even in the slightest). It serves no purpose in this thread and goes nowhere. You have your opinion, but it isn't an opinion universally shared by others.
Well, you don't really get it, I guess. I agree that the 1st was not worth $500, but the 3G is worth it, unless you focus on the little things. But now they will be fixed, and for free too. And the iPhone can do tasks that most other phones cannot. period. How did that go again, Sprint finally gave all their smartphones MMS just last summer? Well, back on topic, please.
Ok ok I will admit that apple does infact know their target market. I just kind of shocked me to see this video, of hundreds of people clapping and cheering for copy-paste and MMS. To each their own i guess. (btw, MMS was always an option with third party apps, without having to unlock or 'jail-break' the phone)
With all due respect to you Mike, that remark is a little condescending for the large fraction of 17 million people, who are not core Apple fans (myself included), and bought the phone because, while not perfect in all ways, they saw the future possibilities. Besides the 'features' it lacks, is far less then the features it has. There were a lot of things missing on BB. Email was BB's greatest strength only. Yankee, comparing a free base phone to the iPhone (or any smartphone) is ridiculous, based on whether it has MMS or voice dialing, etc. Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, and like Apple's mouse, folders and icons implementation years ago vs MS-DOS, the iPhone is being widely imitated by other manufactures. Same too with the well organized application stores. It's the whole package that makes this phone, not the tiny details. And it is a very good "phone" too. As good as any Nokia, BB or Moto that I've owned.
I disagree with you that my remark was "a little condescending". I didn't elaborate on the point I was trying to make, but you said it perfectly in the quote above: "saw the future possibilities". I was trying to say that whatever the iPhone didn't have, the first time around, it made up for its minor shortcomings in so many other ways. I was using the word "amazing" to make a point about the way Yankees used the word in his post. That's all. You interpreted what I said in a different way than what I meant. And by the way, I'm one of those among the fraction of people who bought the iPhone because of the possibilities, not merely because it was an Apple product.
Me and the wife were just in the at&t store in the mall. All the reps there were trying to sell the the iPhone. We got to look at it and play with it. Just to see what I would get, I asked him about MMS and why it isn't on there and the rep said because Apple only likes quality things and the pictures associated with MMS were not quality pics, they were too low quality, so Apple decided NOT to include MMS on the iPhone. Ok. Sooooo....that is why they SELL the MMS app for 3.99? I said...no thanks. What a crock line from the rep. My wife said how can they not include MMS..every other phone out there does it. So...I'm glad they are finally giving the phone what should have been there (not for a price) from the beginning.
:browani: $3.99 for MMS? Just a thought, the intro of MMS onto the iphone (officially, at least) is going to put a HUGH strain on the AT&T servers. As it is, AT&T MMS stinks, bad. My friends palm centro and my other friends AT&T phones take hours upon hours to send an MMS. I cannot imagine having a few million iphone pile on will help too much.
I didn't think of this Yankees! That is right! What is going to happen when all of a sudden all these people are sending picture messages out like crazy because they can now?? AT&T MMS is already half down the toilet. Last night, my wife sent me a pic of some wood flooring she was looking at for the house. It never made it. My friend on Sprint who sends me tons of MMS's, are delayed all the time by hours. I can't imagine what the new load on the MMS server is going to do :speechles
I cannot even imagine what is going to happen. Wait, yes i can. Engadget headline, 6/15/09: "Flood of MMS from iphone's cause AT&T's MMS servers to overload, catch fire. No word on when the service will be restored. Apple says that a new, shinier form of MMS with less buttons will be available in a year, for $9.99"
My boss has an iPhone and he uses email to send stuff. He didn't see the point of texting or mms if he had email.
Before you hammer the iPhone for not having features "that my parents free sanyo flip phone can do", think about the fact that your parents free Sanyo flip phone cannot browse the web in full like the iPhone can. It cannot do email like the iPhone can. It cannot stream audio like the iphone can. It cannot load Google Maps like the iPhone can. It does not have an MP3 player like the iPhone has. I cannot play Youtube like the iPhone can. It cannot sync with Exchange email like the iPhone can. It cannot open email attachments (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, PDF) like the iPhone can. It does not have WiFi. It cannot identify your location like the iPhone can. It cannot do Voice over IP! It does not have a full virtual keyboard. It does not have a touch screen.... etc... etc... etc.... should I go on?
"It cannot do email like the iPhone can." it might not be as elegant as the iphone, but the sanyo does in fact havea built in"sprint mobile email" client for email. It works well enough. Hey, it even has push notifications. "It cannot stream audio like the iphone can." Actually, the sanyo has access to Sprint Radio AND TV. It has access to many (and some free) channels of sirius radio, as well as LIVE stream TV stations. I don't think the iphone was capable of streaming live video at all until very recently. "It cannot load Google Maps like the iPhone can." It may not have access to questionable features like street view, but I have had google maps on the phone for years now. And with the right add on to it, it is able to access GPS information. "It does not have an MP3 player like the iPhone has" Granted, nobody is expecting any other phone to beat an ipod. This better be the iphones strongest feature. "I cannot play Youtube like the iPhone can." No youtube, but I have had youtube on my phone for a year and have used it once or maybe twice. "It cannot sync with Exchange email like the iPhone can." How many people actually use this? "It cannot open email attachments (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, PDF) like the iPhone can." I believe, if I am looking back correctly, that my old Sanyo M1 does in fact include a document viewer, that allows you to view word files. "It does not have WiFi." Again, I have had this on my mogul/touch pro for over a year, and have used it only a very few times. A bunch of applications on the iphone REFUSE to use 3G (or edge) data, and require you to use wifi. This is never the case on any windows mobile application I have ever usd. "It cannot identify your location like the iPhone can." Sure it can, and it can actually do it better! The little sanyo uses agps for TURN BY TURN directions with telenav, and it works very well. Even though the iphone 3G has had GPS the entire time, for some reason it still does not have turn by turn navi. That is shameful. " It cannot do Voice over IP! " Actually, it can. The sanyo does include readylink over EVDO. Although nobody uses it, and it is being discontinued, it still counts. Should I go on? btw, in your signature, should you have to really "pwn" your phone to use it properly? I mean all of this in good faith, just to get a debate going. Please do not take this as a personal attack.
If I got an iPhone, I would very definitely jailbreak it. You know why? Because iCan :lmao: Sorry, couldn't resist. Back to regularly scheduled programming now. Palm850/v0100 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.11)
No personal attack taken Yankees. But in my remarks I was comparing the iPhone features to your parents "free Sanyo" which was the example you posted. I'm sure if you bundle all phones in Sprint's lineup you will find comparable features to what the iPhone has and that would not be the same comparison anymore, would it? Also, none of the features that I mentioned the iPhone can do require jailbreaking. By the way, who uses Exchange? People like me and many other business users. It's an excellent push-email/calendar sync feature which doesn't require connecting a wire. I'm sure the day you get to use it, you'll like it. As for ReadyLink, it may be using VoIP technology, but the most common use of VoIP is to make regular or long distance calls which is what I was referring to.
Yeahhh I know, I am just messing with you iphone guys. Honestly, I might have even considered the thing if AT&T's network was more up to speed, and without so many issues.
