I was just wondering how many people here are using their PDAs (be it PPC or Palm) to surf the web using their cell phone as a dial up modem? What kind of speeds are you guys getting. Is it a worthwhile experience? What sites can or can I not be able to view?

I was using my using my HP Jornada 540 over IR to my SE T68i. The Jornada has a Novatel Minstrel CDPD modem with service through Omnisky (bought out by Earthlink.) But now Earthlink is increasing the fee from $400/yr to $500/yr. So I was looking at the T68i so that I could Bluetooth to the Jornada. Unfortunately, the T68's poor reception was killing me so I'm trying a Moto T720. It doesn't have Bluetooth or IR so I'll have to get a cable soon.

Realistically, the Jornada 540 is only PocketPC not PocketPC 2002, so it only uses Internet Exporer3. Thus I can't go to sites with frames. And the process is 133MHz, way too slow, but fine for most of the sites I went to.

My coworker has a iPaq, upgraded to PocketPC 2002 and he Bluetooths it to a Ericsson T39. The iPaq has a 206MHz processor so surfing is much better. He's going to upgrade to the latest iPaq with a 400MHz processor and built in Bluetooth. So his surfing should be good.

My experience with with the slower processor is that with the Bluetooth, I could use the Jornada just like I had alway with the Mintrel modem. The surfing was a little faster but the older PocketPC software made that limited. Thus, I mostly used the Jornada to get e-mail so surf to a WAP site. In the end, I found that I was surfing more on my phone than on the Jornada. I tried configuring the phone to get the e-mail instead but the limited "keyboard" on the phone meant that managing my mail was easier on the PDA. (e.g.: delete multiple spam messages without having to read each one.)

My recommendation: If you have a recent PDA, or live most of your life on the PDA, then get a phone with the best reception in your area, preferably one with Bluetooth. That's what my coworker has done and he's very happy. But if you're like me and either don't have a fast PDA, or want the convinience of just one device, then look at a phone with a big screen. I used to have a Mitsubishi T250 using AT&T's PocketNet web service. Big 10-line display which is why I'm addicted to surfing from the phone. Now with the Moto T720, it's like I have a color version of my old Mitsubishi. But smaller and lighter and better talk time. I just wish it had Bluetooth.

I've connected my Sony CLie to my nokia 8390 to surf the internet via gprs link using ir. With AT&T it costs 3 cents per kilobyte. I'm trying to go online using my dial-up service if anyone knows how that would be great. Running Palm OS vs 4.1 for Sony Clie

I'm interested to hear how you got your 8390 and your clie to use GSM. I've tried everything and the palm just sits there at "Dailing GPRS" when I hit connect.

Here's what I have so far:

Nokia 6590 (very similiar to the 8390)
I'm on the AT&T GSM network.
    I have a Sony Clie PEG-NR70V

I've followed the instructions as follows to connect the palm OS to the GPRS network.

    On the palm:
    Preferences -> Connection
    New
    Name: Nokia
    Connect to: Modem
    Via: Infrared

    Dailing: TouchTone
    Volume: Low

    Details...
    Speed: 57,600
    Flow Control: Automagic
    Init String: [blank]

    Preferences -> Network
    Service: GPRS
    User Name: [blank]
    Password: -unassigned-
    Connection: Nokia
    Phone #: *99#

    Nokia:
    I enable IR

    Palm:
Hit "connect" and it just sits there forever saying it is dailing.

    Now, here's the best part.

My Windows 2000 laptop has no problem connecting to the GPRS network via IR.
My palm has no problems beaming contacts to the phone.

    Very odd.

    Any insight would be HUGE!!!!

    Thanks,
    Ryan

Ryan, if you have a Palm device, try this website: http://www.palm.com/be/ie/mobile/gprs.html. I connected my Palm to the the internet via AT&T GPRS using the infrared port. I have a Sony Ericsson T68i and not a Nokia, so I'm not sure about your phone settings.

With regard to the Palm settings, I found that the "2nd method" worked better. Just substitute "proxy" for "APN" and "010.250.250.250" for "0.0.0.0" in the script.

Let us know how it worked for you.

    Humm, no love.

First method: Same thing... Clie just sits there and says "connecting..."

Second method: Error box: "Error: Incomplete setup. Please check yoru entwork settings."

I'm going to keep fooling with it. THANKS FOR THE LINK!

    SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Method two does work... I needed to use a "space" for my username and password (AT&T doesn't need one)!

    THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

Have a great holiday, I know you've made mine!

I'm using a LG5350 w/ iPaq 3635. I've only had it working for 24 hours but I've visited over 30 websites and I haven't found anything I couldn't access seamlessly (yet anyway). For details check out the posting located here.
