I'm thinking seriously about dumping CableOne (the only alternative where I live) and going with Millenicom (Welcome), a Franklin CDU-680 card (Wireless Broadband Equipment) and the new little CradlePoint portable EVDO router (PHS300 Battery Powered EVDO Router by CradlePoint - Full Review : EVDOinfo.com). CableOne is jacking up their price again and I still can't get much more than 1.5MB most of the time. So the cost would be about the same and I'd be able to use the card with the router for my home network, and still be totally portable. Since Millenicom doesn't require a contract I could ship the card back to them if it doesn't work out, and I'd still have the router - which will work with a Blackberry 8830 and will soon work with the Mogul or Touch. Right now I have no EVDO where I live, but it's supposed to happen in February and I obviously wouldn't do anything until that happens. But I doubt very seriously there will be an overloaded tower in my little town, and the tower is directly across the canyon from me with no obstructions at all. I certainly get a very fast 1x signal here, so I imagine it will be the same with EVDO. Any comments? Any ideas? Any advice? TIA - sheureka
Millenicom's national network is comprised of many different backbones which allows us redundancy in all major cities. Each network currently operates independently of each other. You must use the access numbers of the network you originally sign onto. If you sign on using an access number on the one network, your account will activate on any number listed in any city shown on that network only. It will not activate on the another network.
Millenicom? How about MilleniCON? MilleniCON lost their contract with sprint. Now they are appearantly with verizon. Instead of getting broadband speeds you now get dial up speeds (115kbts) for the same price. $60/month for rediculously slow dialup. They tried to pull a fast one on their customers by not telling them about the contract or speed changes. When customers called to complain they told them there was a problem with their franklin 680 and they needed to send in for a replacement. In return you get an entirely different (cheap POS) verizon compatable modem. Now when you call and complain about the speeds being 1/10th of promised broadband speeds they give you the runaround. Then when you want to cancel. Your contract they play the "we never received the device in original box with cd back" game. So, the only way to immediately close your account with milleniCON is to have your bank shut off your debit/credit card you signed up with for milleniCON and issue a new one. Just love being without a debit card for the holiday season. My recommendation is: Avoid MilleniCON like the plague. Deceitful business tactics.
