Cool It's pretty well hidden...I never noticed it until i glanced over that way one day. Do you work in the wireless industry larry?
Yeah I barely saw it myself because it's hidden and it's unusually low, especially for a Nextel site. No I don't work in the wirelesss industry. By the way if you pass the 22 frwy at Haster St. in GG you will notice an AT&T site and a Sprint palm tree right next to each other. The Sprint site went up in June 2000. At Brookhurst & the 22 frwy (traveling East bound) Sprint has a 73 ft pine tree located on the school grounds. This one was put up August 2001.
I'll have to chk that one out.. So far, the tallest one I've seen (standing by itself) is the Verizon cell @ goldenwest college. One I saw coming home from West Covina was on the 57 south...has a crucifix on a small tower, but has cells around it. I looked at my phone and it had full bars, so I'm assuming it's Cingular/T-Mobile. God uses Cingular? :-\
You mean the church tower on the 57 frwy overlooking Diamond Bar Blvd.? That one is Sprint. I watched that one going up in June 2001. Cingular has a site right near there on the roof of a building along Brea Canyon Rd. That is why you had a full signal.
I can't remember the intersection...but it was a white steel tower with a big crucifix on top...had ome small cells inside the white enclosure... :-(
Yep that's the one. It's Sprint and is even listed on www.sprintsitesusa.com I think but no picture yet: Diamond Canyon site
They're getting awefully creative where they're putting sites these days... Anyone got any real *interesting* ones?
Hi, Larry ! This has been a fun (and instructive) discussion. I can't wait to see what "unusual" sites people contribute. Even after reading your descriptions of the panel configurations, I'm terrible at being able to ID a site. I have another one to ask you about: really nifty palm tree off the NE side of the railroad tracks that paralell Edinger/Irvine Centre Drive as it runs along the perimeter of the closed El Toro Marine Base. It looks like the "foot" comes down near the Public Storage facility. Any idea whose it is? /Christa PS - You know, when I was growing up in Britain, we had a term for the folk who obsessively watched trains to "collect" their engine numbers: trainspotters. You lot qualify as modern-day spotters: tower-spotters !
Christa, I'm not sure of the exact location you are trying to describe. Could you provide an address or cross street? Sprint has a palm tree antenna between Walnut & Edinger (West of Jamboree Rd) which can be viewed at this address: http://www.sprintsitesusa.com/tower/Enlarged_Photo.cfm?CascadeSiteNumber=OG03XC169&PhotoNumber=10 Nextel has one in this area as well. Yep I do qualify as being an obsessed tower spotter.
LOL... Tower-Spotter... guilty as charged Up until last August, I hadn't cared nor paid attn to towers/sites...now I find it very interesting... Maybe a discussion forum may be in order? "Tower Spotters - OC/LA Area"
Sounds good to me. I'll post anytime I see a new tower going up. I'm still waiting for construction to begin on the joint project between Sprint and Cingular for towers at El Modena Park in the City of Orange about 4 miles from where I live. The Sprint antenna will be located on a ball field light pole while the Cingular antenna will be disguised next to it as a flag pole. I can't wait to watch this one go up.
During the day. It can sometimes take 2 or 3 months to complete a project but usually 4 to 6 weeks if everything goes well.
I travel up Irvine Centre Drive to the 55 Freeway each day. I believe the street name changes from ICD to Edinger at Jamboree, so the tower would be located along Edinger, between Jamboree and Red Hill, just past the newly-constructed transit centre. It's on the opposite side of the rail tracks that paralell Edinger, and its "foot" seems to be in the midst of a Public Storage facility. Spotters, ho ! Christa
Hmm...then that rules out Sprint and Nextel. Those palm trees are close but don't quite match up with the location you're describing. Now I'm curious. I'll try to drive by soon to see if I can ID it.
Woohoo! I'm back from San Francisco. it's funny...I never really miss SoCal until I get back.... hehe. My T-Mobile phone worked flawlessly I'm happy to say... rarely got less than 4 bars. I also had full coverage all along the 80 going heading back towards Sacramento.
I got back from my trip to San Diego last night. My Sprint phone also worked flawlessly with only one minor exception. The two previous weak spots along the I-5 (Encinitas Blvd. & near the Fairgrounds in Del Mar) have been fixed. I had a couple of hours of free time so I went and looked for a couple of Sprint sites which I had heard were approved for construction earlier this year. The site at Del Mar Heights Rd. & Lansdale Ave. has been constructed and is now running. This was originally denied by the Carmel Valley community planning board but Sprint appealed it to the SD city planning commission and won. Apparently the community planning board did not have jurisdiction over the project like they had thought. The palm tree site at the Del Mar Fairgrounds has also been completed. The only dead spot I encountered was in Del Mar on Camino Del Mar just South of Del Mar Heights Rd. But Sprint recently won approval for a new micro cell that should take of it soon
Hi Larry... Glad to hear you had a nice weekend When I got back, I noticed the new Cingular tower in westminster is still spitting out coverage... how do we know when it's officially on-line, or are they in a beta-stage w/ it? I get full bars now
Sometimes they have it in test mode for a couple of weeks before they make all the adjustments. They have a drive team that goes around and optimizes the new tower to the existing towers. Do you gets a full signal when right under the tower? If so then it is probably already on.
I get full signal now at the ralphs shopping ctr across the street and at the arco station I know it has to to with zoning and/or property mgmt, but I'm surprised they put the tower over there...they could've easily had the room behind the Ralphs shopping ctr.
When I was there last week I got right under the tower and looked inside the equipment area. The tower was definetly not on. This of course may have changed since then.
hehe... now you've got my curiousity going I'll drive by and look t'night if I have time... how will I know if it is on? I mean... if it's humming, does that necessarily mean it's on?
I could tell that it wasn't quite finished yet. There appeared to be some wiring that wasn't hooked up and the equipment enclosure did not even have a door built. I doubt they would turn it on without a door and lock.
