Looks like we're targeted for divestiture according to the map here. I've heard more bad stories than good about AT&T. Sprint's out of the question. I've seen commercials for "Jibber Jabber" (T-Mobile?), but I think they'll use AT&T's towers. What's everyone else around here going to do? It seems VZW's going to have the monopoly.
Re: Anyone here in Souther IL besides me? I've been an AT&T/Cingular customer for years and I've been very pleased. You'll find that more people will scream when they are not satisified, but say nothing if they are pleased. Being divested from Alltel though. I have to say this. If I were to be a CDMA customer it would have only been through Alltel. I'm not pleased with Verizon's lockdown of devices and features available on their network. Try talking to others that live in your area with AT&T and ask how their service is. Also to note, if AT&T is taking that area over in a divesture they will probably beef up their network in that area as well. -Jay
Re: Anyone here in Souther IL besides me? I've talked to some co-workers & they're the ones that told me about the spotty service. I also talked to a Radioshack manager whom i've know for several years & he also told me about the spotty service as well as complaints from customers. He also stated how difficult it was to get customers to sign up due to the customers location...seems that AT&T want people that live in the larger cities here & not "the boonies". As far as to the divestiture, I assume they'd be the logical candidate since the company that Alltel took over here a couple of years ago (First Cellular) used GSM phones as well as CDMA. I assumed they used AT&T (then Cingular) towers.
Re: Anyone here in Souther IL besides me? If you are on CDMA now and AT&T buys out the divested customers in that area they will beef up the network in that area to serve those customers. By the time you need to upgrade your phone they'll probably already have that taken care of. -Jay
I've got some friends that had AT&T & they were sent a letter telling them their service was being terminated due to excessive usage while roaming. Granted, they were in a "partner area", but wouldn't AT&T have known that during sign-up? Where I "live" is listed as "moderate" on their coverage map. The route I take to & from work is mostly in the "partner area" & that's usually where I make ~20 hours of calls per month. What's the chances of me getting one of those letters after I sign up (if I do)?
AT&T is known for terminating service if your use is more than 50% in a partner area. I had a friend who lived near me and he had Cingular a while back before AT&T came here and bought out Dobson, and he was discontinued for roaming too much. However, if you could, think about going to Verizon. I had Verizon before I switched to AT&T for the iPhone and I roamed more than 50% of the time and I was never terminated. I've heard similar situations with people who have Verizon. It's very unlikely to be terminated if you excessively roam. However, if they cover your area pretty well, there's no need to even worry.
I think it depends more on what you get for roaming service. If it's covered roaming you should get your contract fulfilled, but if it's uncovered a lot of the time expect it to be dropped.
While VZW is tempting (due to my getting an 18% discount for government employee & I really like the Storm), aren't their plans a little higher when it comes to Blackberry devices & such?
