We are getting a Target in town in March. They just started to pass out apps & interview for Managers & Supervisors, regular job interviews won't happen till the second week in January. With some possible coming down the pipeline at my current job, I am thinking of getting out. Since this is my first real job I don't want to get fired in any way. I would like to hear any body's experiences with Target?
I applied there once but never got hired. Had a couple of friends who work there, I hear they're pretty good to work for but it's still your typical box store job. Much better than Wal-Mart, though.
Yeah, I would work at Target before Wal-Mart as well. The only thing I hate about Target is they don't have an automotive department. I once went in to get a replacement bulb for my taillight and found out the only things in their "automotive" department are soap, wax, CD holders, seat covers, and cell phone chargers(1/2 the aisle was phone chargers). At least in Wal Mart you can buy a lightbulb and a quart of oil... -Jay
This is good to hear nothing too negative about them yet. Don't get me started on Wal-Mart. They are the main fixture in town right now, and the horror stories I hear make you almost not want to shop there.
I've also heard good things about working for them - and they're certainly one of my favorite stores. Target stores are always really clean and uncluttered - which is certainly a contrast with WalMart. And the employees never look really bummed out - another contrast! I'd go for it! - sheureka
In my Corporate Governance class at my university, we watched a video about Wal-Mart. In short, they said one of the reasons (besides looking for theft, etc.) that they have cameras both in their store and in their parking lot is to watch to see if any of their employees are holding meetings about Wal-Mart's practices and policies and conspiring against them. The video we watched in class had both former employees and current employees (they had their faces blocked out and had fake names to protect their identities).
If you like your job don't just bail out. It is OK to get layed off if its due to a company wide problem. No employeer would hold that against you. In the mean time try to determine what is really going on. Sometimes its just talk. Good Luck
I too like Target, It was one of my favorite stores growing up in SoCal. I am very happy we are getting one out here. The great thing is it's a five minute walk from my house. That dosen't surprise me a bit. I am not sure what would be worse, working at Wal-Mart or a casino like the one I work for. Thanks for the help Jerro. I do really like my job, but have been thinking of leaving as of late. I would not be worried at all if I was laid-off, it happened to me once already with this job. I just transfered to another department, and was lucky enough to be able to transfer back. I know everything going on with this latest issue, and no one in their right mind would want to put it down on a future job app if they got stuck with it guilty or not.
here is the video link for that video http://http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3836296181471292925&q=walmart+video&total=5777&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=4
Thanks for posting it Alienware_51. This looks like the video I saw in my Corporate Governance class.
I heard that it is a great place to work. Payment will be get every 2 weeks. Every place is good for work, when all members are worked together as a team.
Just a small update: I wen in and had an initial interview. I think it when pretty well. It is much easier to do an interview with some real work experiance behind you. I am suppost to get a call in a few days, but made sure I got a number to call them back.
Just curious, how do people get retail or big box jobs? I never make it past the electronic test?!? Good luck budney!
You might think too independently for them... Those tests are designed to put very specific mindsets on the top of the list.
Thank you all! I did have to fill out a multiple choice questionnaire. Hopefully I didn't think too independently for them.
Not at all, nor am I saying they're looking for idiots. They use the exams to find people that fit their company culture to a T.
Budney I wish you the best of luck and really hope this works out for you. I know what a struggle and pain it can be to find a new job.
I must have missed this thread last month :O budney...I worked for Target...back in the middle 90's....for about two years. It wasn't too bad. I started in hardlines on the floor. After about a year...the assistant store team leader (assistant store manager) and I were butting heads...he was being an idiot and I couldn't work for him anymore. I asked to get moved. They moved me to the fitting room...where I answered the calls, gave people numbers to enter the fitting room...handed out the calls to the correct department for assistance, etc. Then a year later I went to work at a casino. I can't tell you how many times rumors went around....layoffs, firings, restructuring..etc. I thought I was toast so many times, I lost track. I ended up leaving on my own, never getting the ax. Most of the "talk" there never went into action. Good luck though! What position did you apply for?
It's not so much a stuggle when you still have a job you really like. Just a quick question since you worked for Target. Could you have Tranfered to a different store? And with reguards to rumers. For me and my department their are no rumors. In my department their are only three people. I am basicly the supervisor even if my badge dosn't say it. My boss tells me everything that is going on incase she is not around I can handle it. Now that this last issue looks to be behind us I will say that it had to do with stealing. A gift card a customer mailed in to a employee for a Thank you gift didn't make to the employee and was used by someone else. At the same time their where casino chips missing from registered letters mailed to the casino. And of course since my boss and I sign for all the registered letters, and sort out our customers mail from the company mail we where number one on the list. So you now can see my concern, and why I started to look else where. But most of all I am hoping to get away from the negative atmosphere, I always seem to be in dam if you do... dam if you don't situations, the constint changing/bending/deleting of our rules (mostly federal) because customers & employees complain, and the lack of respect from customers & employees toward me and my job. Oh... BTW... I applied for cashier, customer service, electonics, stocker
I met some of the most level headed folks in retail... so I know that there *re some bright ones trying to make a living
I can only give my perspective on how they are dealing with the FD and inspections/violations and I find it a pleasure working with Target, they do whatever is needed and the employee's/managers always seem happy & good to work with. As for the Wal-Mart in our town, don't get me started I can say they are the complete opposite & have been a thorn in my side. So in my opinion from working with Target & Wal-Mart, I see Target as being a much better run & class company and I think working for them would be the same. Good Luck if you do apply with them and with your current job.
