Discussion not worth continuing??? That sounds like you're dissin me!!! Anyways, if anyone has any other information in the future, please let us know. ~Andy
Well another Verizon user also supports Andy's thoughts on Sprint in the SLC area? I think all that has been demonstrated is that no one here uses Sprint in the area- which is the only first hand experience. Before I am accused, I am not trying to be a Sprint cheerleader but I do like to consider only directly relevant information. Also, it doesn't really matter to me at all G.
Well Fathead stated a Sprint user in his travel group, I would consider this first hand experience. And a VZW user(me) using the Sprint network on a regualar basis is not first hand experience??? also what I see/hear from other Qwest/Sprint users here is not first hand information/experience... Excuse me then
As I said, a friend with a sprint phone generally had more problems than I did with my Verizon phone. And another person with T-Mobile. I won't up and say Sprint is anything in SLC, as I don't go there enough to give it a full test. But I can say that Andy is not incredibly exaggerating the situation.
Agenthibby will put in his :twocents: seems to be a heated thread remember Verizon network in Salt Lake was built by US West and was part of Cellular One back in the day. That means if Airtouch and now Verizon keep the network up it will be great Same for AT&T cellular network in Utah. It was McCaw Cellular part of Celluar One. Cricket does not have too many strong markets in US. From Ogden to Provo Cricket has a good network, but not as good as like Verizon's or AT&T's network is in Utah. This come from one friend who got service back with them after having horrible serivce in 2001-2003. In the watach I know Andy disagrees with me, but I feal that AT&T/Cingular has a slight upper hand in having the best network in the Wasatch Front. My roomate wants to leave AT&T/Cingular soon and go to Verizon reason why? most of his friends family and work use Verizon now so IN-Network calling can be used. Very seldom when in the mountains does he roam on Verizon. There are more times my phone is on AT&T/Cingular they both are great networks. Sprint PCS in Logan... lot people up here have service with Sprint due to Convergys (a company the does customer service outsourcing). Sprint has 2 Sprint Stores in Logan! Verizon has 0 zilch! Verizon still has the better network in some buildings my friends with Sprint have no signal and I am 100% ok! I am not here to knock down Sprint. They have resloved many capacity issues and holes over the past few years. They just need to get a get rid of a few affliates and they will be fine. (I-PCS and Horizon PCS) I think that Sprint has not added towers in the watach front as quickly as T-Mo and Cricket have in the past 2 years. Not to say Sprint's network is horrible or it has went downhill that is just not true in Utah. There have been 3 places in the past 2 years where my Verizon phone was getting a weak signal and my phone changed to the stronger Sprint PCS signal. They might be in last place right now in overall coverage, but that don't mean it could change in a year overall network quality on the watach front 2001---------------------------------------2004 1 AT&T ---------------------------------1 Cingular 2 Verizon-------------------------------2 Verizon 3 Sprint---------------------------------3 T-Mobile 4 Voice Stream------------------------4 Cricket (No Service in Logan) 5 Cricket---(No Service in Logan)----5 Sprint 6 Qwest ---(No Service in Logan)--
Agent, I have to agree with you that AT&T is very strong here as well. I have personally not had them, just have spare GSM and TDMA phones around testing their coverage. Their TDMA coverage, though, still seems more thorough then GSM though, although some people on TDMA here are experiencing more and more dropped calls, but in general, AT&T and VZW are coverage wise very close. And you are also right that CricKet and T-Mobile have been adding a lot of towers, Sprint did, however, upgrade some towers from 2 to 3 panels per sector, maybe to reduce capacity issues, but not add nearly as many sites as T-Mo/CricKet... on the other hand T-Mo used to have capacity issues while I still had them. While I had CricKet you were able to see coverage improvements and new sites go up on a month-to-month basis. They are doing a great job here. Agent, I have a friend in Logan who uses Sprint; I was up in Logan this summer for a day, also visited USU, and didn't have any problems in Logan with VZW. Didn't check for the Sprint signal. Fathead thanks for being so honest and neutral. Lol, very heated My list would look like this: 1. Verizon AT&T/Cingular 2. T-Mobile 3. CricKet 4. Sprint 5. Dont' know about Nextel, have never had them, but they seem to have a good network here as well.
Nextel has good coverage probably about a little bit better than T-Mobile. We will see next year when they are CDMA on PCS what they are like. Sprint is good, but I think it is just building pentration is why you lose signal with Sprint in Logan. The Cingular signal I am judging is Analog/TDMA not GSM. Since there is a loss of TDMA channels for GSM blocked calls are on the rise every now and then. With VZW there are still a few channels that are bad I don't know which since my phone does not say unless I am in Test Mode and I don't like to be in Test Mode. Why I say they are bad is you will sound like you are far away and you are getting full signal. (I don't know about Cache Valley Wireless or Union Cellular in Logan) In Logan all the providers are about the same in the city. In buildings and outside of Logan is where you will see the differences
You might even see differences driving to Logan through Sardine Canyon, and going up to Bear Lake. Agent, have you tried Nextel in our area yourself? They seem to have quite a lot of towers around here. Yes, it's mainly building penetration here in SLC as well, and high noise levels with Sprint. If you are judging Cingular's TDMA Network here than coverage wise they are at least equal to VZW, but quality wise they lack a little in my opinion. Cingular TDMA people always sound muffled when I talk to them, but I agree that coverage wise TDMA is awesome. ~Andy
I wish I could judge Nextel, but really can't since many people when I came to Logan switched to AT&T or Voicestream back in 1999 or 2000. Many thought wakie-talkie was a good idea, but not many of there friends were on so they had to get rid of it. My roomate was with Nextel in 1997-1999 then he has been with AT&T/Cingular since. Parts of Sardine Verizon might be a weak provider since that is where I have roamed on Sprint PCS before. Since Bair Lake (Rich county) is Union Cellular terriory Verizon does need to build PCS towers up there ASAP (once the qwest deal is complete) Nextel, Cingular, T-Mobile, Sprint do have coverage there.
Yes, you are right about the Bear Lake Area, but us Verizon users should be able to roam on Sprint for free in the areas around Bear Lake where Verizon is weak. When going through Sardine this summer I held a call all the way through, even though my signal was down to -102db at times. I hope VZW realizes the Bear Lake Area is important.
Update: Since yesterday I am unable to receive a Qwest signal(when focing my phone to *22806) anywhere I tried from North Salt Lake to Draper. It looks like they totally took the old Qwest network off the air for now. This has, in the past, happened locally but the site would be back on within hours. This now seems to be an area wide thing...I wonder what's to come? ~Andy
Follow Up: Today, still, the whole Qwest network seems to be off the air. From downtown to residential areas in the southern valley, no sign of Qwest anymore. Does anyone know what this means? Could this mean that Qwest moved all of their customers onto the Sprint network and that the VZW-Qwest deal could be done soon?? Anyone have any ideas? Andy
Anyone heard from Snake River PCS and find out how they'll handle their roaming aggreements with Qwest/VZW? Only have read their stuff on the FCC page... If Snaker River PCS goes under, will VZW customers loose any coverage in rural Idaho?
...I don't think so, I don't think VZW uses them as an Extended Carrier, but I might be wrong...maybe someone else can clarify.
Andy, My guess would be that Qwest has 1 guy going around and turning the network off. The deal should close in January is what I understand. The sooner the better. Verizon has good coverage for the most part where Snake River PCS is expect for the Oregon part.
Hmm... one guy, it seemed more like a big switch that someone turned off all sites with. I couldn't receive a Qwest signal anywhere from North Salt Lake to Orem overnight(also driving through West Jordan, Magna, Sandy, Draper, Millcreek)... dead from one night to the next morning. Yeah, the sooner the better, I just hope they will use those left over 1900 Qwest sites for voice also and not take them down or only use them for data.
The old Qwest network is still online here in the Seattle area (I got an old Qwest handset I can use to test it).
Thanks for the update, TProphet... You can't test *228xx with your Sprint phone, right? They block that out or something, correct?
I found out that *22800 or *22801 will not work on a sprint phone. Since its cellular the firware won't allow it.
After reading this again I just tried this and my deactivated SPCS phone will behave wierd when trying to force it to another PCS provider via *228xx
Here's something I found today(I'm just going to add to this threat since I don't think it's worth starting a new one): While driving in the car today I saw a former Qwest site disguised as a pole(this site, and all of Qwest's sites here have been off for over a month now) being taken away. Part of the pole, I guess where the panels used to be, was open and cables were hanging out. There was nobody at the site other than a truck with a lift, which, I guess, is supposed to lift the workers up to where the panels used to be. Who would be taking away this Qwest site at this time? I don't think Qwest would be taking away a site now, shortly before their ownership is supposed to be given to VZW, and I also don't think that the deal has been finalized yet and VZW has ownership of all those sites, and I don't think Sprint, who has been converting some of Qwest's sites would be taking it away, unless they are converting the site and adding new panels or something, and not taking it away. Does anyone have any idea? ~Andy
Maybe both Sprint and Verizon decided they didn't want or need that particular site and so it's being removed. Or maybe they're just reconfiguring or changing out the wiring and panels. Keep a watch on it.
Sprint has a tower up on a hill about 1/2 mile away and signal is good. Verizon serves the area from a tower that is probably 1 mile or more away, but service is strong, even indoors, for both carriers. I will for sure keep you updated as I drive by there again in the coming days. Larry, who would pay for the removal then? Qwest? Verizon? Sprint??
Yes- Verizon phones allow *228xx to force your phone onto a different carrier temporarily; Sprint phones do not support/allow this. In my area: *22800 AT&T/Cingular Wireless Analog *22801 Verizon *22803 Sprint *22804 CricKet *22806 former Qwest
