Been reading that you should have an antivirus program on your smart phone. I have a new (to me) Moto X and do not have an antivirus app. Do I need one/ and what is the recommendation for a program? Free or paid app?

I don't use an anti-virus on my mobile devices. I am just careful about the sites I visit and the apps I download. I don't view anti-virus as a bad thing.

I used Lookout for a while, though.

I have never considered using anti virus software on any of my Androids, like Quint I am very careful about what I download and Lookout is the one antivirus app I have most heard about.

What device did you have before the Moto X?

Same here. I'm careful about what sites I visit on the phone, and which apps I download. No antivirus.

I have only used feature phones prior to the Moto X. My wife has a smart phone (no antivirus) but she only uses for email.

Seems like most do not use anti virus but practice safe surfing.

    Thanks for the responses

While that may be true, I've haven't had any such issue in the 5 years of using Android devices.

    To each its own.

I haven't either and I have read that those apps are a resource hog and with the very low threat its not worth the battery depletion.

Having said that, If rapid battery depletion is the only issue then I guess it doesn't hurt to use one for peace of mind.

As Quint said, to each their own. :)

I've had the Note3 for nearly a year now and AVG was loaded on it from day one. It was also on the Note2. I have not noticed any battery drain. I get a nearly a full day's use from my phone.

KJ, if you had AVG loaded from day one you aren't going to notice any effect on the battery since you don't have a benchmark to compare to.

For me "nearly a full day's use" sounds too low and unacceptable and I don't know anyone with a recent Android device that has to charge their phone more than once a day under normal circumstances. So perhaps the AVG does have a negative effect on your battery - just a thought.

From what I read on the net, one full day use is very common for not only the Note series, but for many smartphones. Perhaps my word choice confused you, but indeed, I only charge my phone once daily, in the evening. In fact, at times, under low usage, I am able to go nearly one-and-a-half days.
